Lydia pulled up on the reins, bringing her mount to a stop as she surveyed her surroundings. The overgrown track wound its way through the narrow valley, the snow covering the landscape in a layer of white. Yet, she knew appearances could be deceiving. Beneath the pristine blanket lay a barren waste devoid of crops or human habitation. Stubby, barren trees rising like skeletal hands out of the snow only added to the desolate feeling.
Since leaving the enemy capitol behind and riding North, she'd seen nothing else. But after five long years of war, what else could one expect? She couldn't say exactly why she'd turned off the main road and onto this little used byway, but something about it drew her on as nothing had in a long time.
She'd never intended to be a soldier, let alone go into battle. For the first fifteen years of her life, she lived a happy if limited existence in a small but prosperous border hamlet of Ninda in the kingdom of Ulrret with her family. Lydia, like most of the people in her village, was born of hearty pleasant stock. Short and sturdy, her brown curls, olive skin and dark eyes marked her as a person of humble origin. Known for her kindness, she was well liked in the village as were her parents.
