This is Jerry Garland's second attempt at publication. ‘A Garland Sampler’ (2000) had very limited circulation, due to an inability to promote it, but didn’t stop his writing poetry. It is a compilation of Poetry and Prose assembled over a few years. The poems are generally written as a response to News and Views of the day. The Prose are a few reminiscences of his life and activities.

RANDIGAL RHYMES

I stole the title for this book from Joseph Thomas, who added a glossary of Cornish words. He described ‘randigal’ as ‘a rigmarole, a nonsensical, unconnected story’. He lived on St. Michael’s Mount, Marazion, Cornwall and his book was published in 1895. My mother grew up in Marazion, but that is another story.

I grew up in Truro, then Aylesbury, Bucks after the war. I migrated to Australia when I was twenty and became a school-teacher in N.S.W. My wife and I now live in a suburb of Newcastle, where we first met. Previously we lived in Sydney.

I self-published A Garland Sampler in 2000 and, of the 200 copies I had printed, I still had some left when I took a stall at a ‘zine fair in Newcastle Library, to sell my latest ‘zine. (That’s a small magazine, usually home-made.)
