This story mixes fantasy with history but contains some historically inaccurate elements.

Long ago, there was a boy named Charles Cutler. He was selfish, stubborn, and hot-tempered. He was widely known in England, as he belonged to an extremely wealthy family. Charles’s father was a Saxon lord, whose riches were immeasurable. They lived in a mansion surrounded by sprawling green lands. Its size and sophistication were praised throughout London. Charles was the oldest of nine siblings. When he turned 14, he started studying at the Oxford university. On his first day in class, he made friends with Robert Hall, a blood descendant of King Edmund of East Anglia. Since Charles was the son of a lord, it became very easy for them to be friends. Charles’s favourite subject was music and Robert’s was geometry. They played cards together and also musical instruments, during breaks. Before bedtime, the students gathered around wood fires and told stories. One night, Charles told a tale about a maiden who was imprisoned in a dragon’s lair for being unfaithful to her husband. This narrative caught the attention of Jane Hathaway. She started to talk with Charles and Robert. This girl had a friend, Wade Smith, who too joined the group, the four students becoming close friends. Two years later, they were very good and solid Oxford students, making their respective families proud. Charles began to develop a romantic interest in Jane. She was pretty, smart, and delightful, despite her seriousness. The students got into new activities like horse riding and hunting.

On a Saturday morning, a hunting party was formed, armed with bows, arrows, spears, daggers, and swords. Charles led the hunting group and encouraged them to sing a song while they were wandering through the forest. While singing the third song, they suddenly heard a somewhat distant movement, followed by a howl. Wolves! said Charles, and indeed, a pack of five grey wolves appeared, looking wild and hungry for blood. Wade killed one of the creatures with his sword but was bitten on his left arm by another of the ferocious animals, unable to battle with two wolves at once. In the end, the young adventurers killed the whole pack and turned their attention to curing Wade’s wound. Jane, who had healing skills, patched up her friend and suggested returning to college. However, Wade insisted that it was nothing and that they should continue the hunt. Jane disagreed but as the rest of the boys were unwilling to stop hunting, she had to give in against her judgement.

A while later they encountered a big cave. It is begging us to enter, said Robert. Jane’s worry for her friend Wade was increasing by the minute. She warned him about the danger that could await them in the cave, but a decisive Wade would not back away. Once in the cave, Charles told everyone to stay sharp.

There was an enormous brown bear sleeping at the end of the dark cave. Wade ran recklessly to fight the fearsome beast. It woke up and started to attack the young hunters. It tore Wade’s leg off and then killed him with a bloody bite. After a very hard fight, they managed to slay the bear. A great deed indeed, but the cost had been too high. Wade’s remains were brought to the Smith family and a funeral took place. Charles, Robert, and Jane offered their condolences to Wade’s parents and left them to mourn.

The next day, after classes at Oxford College, Charles and his two friends went to gamble at the White Horse tavern. Charles was always interested in card games since his father used to gamble at night, mostly on weekends. Robert was the only lucky one among the three friends and won 360 pounds, while Charles and Jane lost all the money they gambled. There was a show at the same tavern with music and dance, and the students enjoyed themselves with mead and ale.

Past midnight, they lost sobriety. The music was loud. Without thinking twice about it, Jane kissed Charles. Robert tried to pretend he did not see anything. As the environment started to become too noisy for the trio, they decided to go somewhere quieter. They found a tent at a park and sat there to talk about the kingdoms of England, how they would like their country to thrive and how it could make a strong mark in this world. Midnight was long past and as there were classes the next day, Robert returned to the college. However, Charles and Jane had other plans. Two teenagers who liked each other, who had consumed alcohol and were alone at night – it doesn’t take much to guess what they would do. Every action has a consequence and soon enough they would find this out.

In the meantime, in the Kingdom of France, there were two travellers wearing red capes and swords. Their names were William Sykes and Edward Ricks. We finish this mission and then go to England, William said. They were searching for a man named Mark Eagleton and approached a merchant in the centre of Paris for information. The merchant took to his heels and the two men pursued him. William caught him and threatened him with a knife to his neck. I cannot betray Mister Eagleton! He will kill me if I do, wailed the merchant.

You either betray him or I cut your throat and you will be dead anyway, threatened William. The merchant told them Eagleton’s location, which was a nearby tavern. As soon as William and Edward entered the place, they saw the man drinking ale and playing cards with some gamblers.

Edward approached Eagleton from behind and whispered in his ear, "We know you are one of them, and
