Chapter 1
A Child in Macondian Land
In a Macondian land, a child lives very differently from children from another place, they are very free, they are in an environment far from noise, far from pollution, far from everything that harms.
In a Macondian land the pavement does not exist, the children are always near the rivers, the children are always playing, the children are always having fun.
The only danger that exists is the one that they themselves cause because of their games.
Gabo knew how to show everyone what it was exactly like to live in a Macondian land. All that magical realism that he describes in his books existed in A Town Called San Agustín. This was a small town without electricity, with very few houses, isolated from the world, whose access was through the river, by small boats with a single engine. There the temperatures always oscillated between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius and the houses were made of bahareque.
The bahareque was a mixture between cow moñinga, mud and straw. They also had thatched roofs to keep them as cool as possible. It had a small church in the center of the square where the inhabitants of this peculiar town met every Sunday to celebrate the Holy Eucharist.
Here in this small town lived Carlitos. At 10 years old, he was free with friends and family, the only thing he loved to do was play, as long as they were not at school or in church receiving the Holy Eucharist on Sunday. He, along with his cousins and friends, had a meeting place, the stone of the Rock
this was a giant stone that was next to the river where they mounted and jumped into the refreshing water of the river, where they enjoyed for a moment, before going to play in their sacred temple, a bare beach full of sand where they put some old rags wrapped in the shape of bases, and which they called the baseball field
This wonderful sport that they listened to on the radio with batteries of long wave, which his grandfather had at home, where on some occasions they met to listen to the games of The New York Yankees
which was the favorite team of that peculiar place.
Carlitos had a dog whose name was Chapolo
.
Carlitos was born on March 27, 1951. He lived in his grandparents' house with his father, in a room that his grandfather had reserved for the two of them.
