SD-WAN is a software-defined approach to managing the WAN.
What is a WAN?
A WAN, or Wide Area Network, is a type of computer network that spans a large geographical area and connects multiple smaller networks or local area networks (LANs). Unlike LANs, which typically cover a limited area such as a single building or campus, WANs can cover vast distances, often connecting cities, countries, or even continents.
The primary purpose of a WAN is to facilitate communication and data exchange between various locations or branches of an organization. It allows users in one location to access resources and services located in another, as if they were part of the same local network.
Key characteristics of a WAN include:
Geographical Scope: WANs cover a wide geographic area, often involving the use of public and private telecommunication networks, such as leased lines, satellites, and the internet, to interconnect different locations.
Heterogeneous Connections: WANs may use various transmission media and technologies to connect the different LANs, including fiber optics, copper cables, wireless links, and more.
Reliability: WANs aim to maintain a reliable and stable connection between distant locations, often utilizing redundant paths and failover mechanisms to ensure continuous connectivity.
Bandwidth: Due to the larger geographical coverage, WANs typically offer higher bandwidth compared to individual LANs. However, the actual speed and performance may still vary depending on the specific connections and technologies used.
Cost: Building and maintaining WANs can be more expensive than LANs due to the use of long-distance telecommunication links and infrastructure.
WANs are essential for businesses and organizations that have multiple locations and need to exchange data, share resources, and collaborate across different sites. They enable efficient communication between remote offices, data centers, cloud services, and allow users to access
