Introduction
We've all heard about the highway of tears, if you haven’t, count yourself lucky. The Highway of Tears is a 450-mile stretch of a Northern highway where at least 22 young women have gone missing over the last five decades. There are many theories and stories surrounding these disappearances. This particular story is one that no one has heard before. Before I tell you the story, let me start at the end and work back.
They thought they found the person responsible for it all, but when young women kept disappearing along the highway of tears even after the suspect had died in custody, they had to re-think their conclusion. Sometimes there will be copycats, sometimes individuals are willing to continue the legacy of a serial killer that they admired a little too much. Was that what is happing? That’s one story I suppose, but I have a different one, a story that dates back into the late sixties and involves two young boys, the first an orphan at age 5 living with his grandmother (Nana), the other raised in a broken home with an emotionally absent father and a covertly narcissistic mother. After a lifelong exposure to mental abuse at the hands of his mother and the lack of anything from his father, Billy Jack learned how to satisfy his own needs. Being in survival mode constantly is what ultimately made his break from reality all the more likely. He and BJ's friends at a young age were compadres, two birds of a broken feather. They had a quiet understanding that neither spoke aloud. Both boys were broken and merely hanging on to youth until they become old enough to escape its incessant and emptiness and hopelessness. Their friendship was the only real evidence that there might be more to life than just endless tormenting trauma that happens to and around them nonstop. You will be the first-hand witness to the pathway these boys led that would ultimately lead them down a dark insidious drive, one adorned with a dense canopy of trees and a murderous secret hidden right out in the open for all to see. One boy grows up to be a soulless manipulator whose ability to dominate and control was superseded only by his natural farm boy charm and dimples. The other, a chameleon of mind and character, an introvert, a virtual ghost in society. He would grow to become a minor pseudo-celebrity with a very low-key lifestyle. Not running from notoriety but not really seeking it either. Together, they were the ying and yang to complete the twisted circle of underhanded depravity and deceit that still continues today. This is the story that tells why girls are still going missing even after the news of having the suspected killer incarcerated. This story gives you a first-hand look at the relationships between victim and killer, it puts you in the front seat to the shocking perspective of a kill scene, visualizing the torment and torture detailed so clearly, it’s as if it’s you the killer has incapacitated and evoking his own free will onto. Walking you through the intense helplessness of no control, of being a serial killer's object of affection.
This story will have you feeling the intricate nuances and detailed planning that the killer hoped you would notice. You will see how he wants you to feel completely terrified yet somehow still getting you to admire him for his cleverness and attention to detail. This story will show you how it might have felt to be a victim, you won’t be able to stop it from happening and you won’t be able to look away. Do you have what it takes to survive an encounter with a serial killer? Well, I did, I befriended him and invited him to my house.
"I think serial killers are kind of like horses,
they can just tell if you’re scared."
Find out once and for all the reason behind the beautiful elderly women's faces carved in the trees down on Ferry Island. Will you still want to venture down there by the river once you discover the shocking and eerie secret those faces keep hidden?
Chapter One
The Ferry Island Carver / Highway of Tears
This story is based on true events, and it begins twelve years ago, for me at least.
Ferry Island is a quaint and beautiful campground and recreational area in a semi-rural town in the Northern region of the west coast of Canada. This story centres on this recreational area and focuses on the missing girls of the Highway of Tears. If you are unfamiliar with the story, I will enlighten you, however before I do that though you need to know who I am and how I came across this story, and how I was involved.
I am an artist and father of two beautiful girls and one older boy who lives with his mother, my ex. After my relationship ended with my son’s mother, I found myself looking for a new beginning, a fresh start somewhere where every fourth person wasn’t my ex-wife’s friend or co-worker. I learned some years ago about the flow of money, and how it isn’t sedentary, money flows like a river, and if you want to make the most of it you need to follow its path, so this ultimately led me North. I had done some research and discovered that there was going to be massive growth in the Northern region of this province. The plan was to beat the rush of people here and take advantage of this incoming flux of revenue, however, as with any flow of revenue comes big money to buy up any and all futures, and as I would find out this region was no different. Despite not beating the big-money companies, I discovered that there was definitely money to be made there still. So, I began the process of relocating myself north, I said my heartfelt goodbyes to all whom I loved and left first on a recon mission. A friend of mine lived in the area in question, so me and my girlfriend at the time rented a car and set off to attend the wedding to which we were invited. While there, I discussed the upcoming flow of business, and our friends concurred and suggested we move up there with them, offering us a place to stay while we secured a place to live. I also went to the local city hall to check out what building and business permits had been pulled recently, this was a trick I learned back home to establish growth in the area. This also confirmed my beliefs and what our friends said. So following the wedding, we went back home and set into motion the move that would ultimately change my life irrevocably. We moved to this quaint small town which I fondly compared to my own home town but not as my hometown was then but rather how it was ten years ago. The businesses, the town, the people, everything, it was like going back in time for me. A complete and total reset. This area would be perfect for a new beginning. It took me no time at all to find work and within a few months found our own place.
After securing an income to pay the bills, I began establishing myself as an artist in the area. I located a local artist-run store that retailed art, you could rent an area of wall in the store for cheap as long as you agreed to man the store for a certain amount of hours per month. This store is known as The White Raven, and became the spot where I met ‘The Ferry Island Carver.’
He was an unassuming quiet recluse of a man, happy and content in appearance, mild-mannered one might even say, but he was definitely socially awkward, an introvert as I would soon discover. My whole life I have befriended many a wallflower type, not because I was like that myself necessarily but rather more out of a self-sense of altruism, likely based on being adopted myself and my innate fear of abandonment. I felt for such souls, thinking perhaps if an understanding, empathetic person befriended them then in some small way, they would feel better about the feeling of being alone on this planet. Sometimes I wonder if I didn’t do it selfishly to make myself feel better, either way, this was the path I had chosen. He fit this personality type to a tee. As I would later find out he lived alone, he has no friends to speak of, only acquaintances, mostly related to his art – his carvings.
He was a middle-aged man, not ugly
