    Chapter 1

My name is Jackson Fillmore and I’m in 11th grade in high school I am a singer and produce my music and publish it. I have a huge crush on the most popular girl in school Monika. She’s beautiful, smart and so talented! The first time we met was when she walked up to me as I was walking down the hallway I could feel my heart stop for about 4 seconds. Her skin tone was flawless, her eyes were sparkling as if they had never been shut, and she smiled brightly. Hi, Her voice is smooth like silk and her smile is contagious. I’m not sure how she managed to capture my heart but she did and I don’t think I’ll be able to ever get over it. Hi. I smile back at her. You look familiar, She tells me after a moment of staring in awe at me. Uh… I say intelligently as I mentally slap myself on the forehead. Are you one of my classmates? She continues. She tilts her head slightly to the side as if she is trying to remember something. Oh wait I think I do know who you are now! Her face lights up and she reaches forward and shakes my name Your Jackson Fillmore right? she asks. She is correct but I still can’t believe that she knows who I am. I nod and she giggles lightly before continuing. Well, I’m very happy to meet you. I’ve always wanted someone to sing with me. We exchange numbers and then head our separate ways. I’ll see her around campus but we will only be in two classes together so there is no way that I’m going to talk to her much more than that. A few weeks later she sits next to me in English class. Hello Jackson, She says sweetly as she smiles and extends a hand toward me. What a coincidence! Yeah, what a coincidence, I respond awkwardly as I grab her outstretched hand and shake it. So what position do you sing? Monika inquires. Um… I stutter trying to think of an explanation. I make my own songs. That sounds fun. Monika beams. Do you sing duets with anybody yet? No, I reply sheepishly. Then let’s make one together! Monika exclaims excitedly. Can we get the other members of the group? Sure. I agree. We spend the rest of class talking about our plans to form a duet. When class is finally over, Monika grabs my arm as we head in our separate directions. See you around. She grins at me. I wave goodbye and return my attention to heading home from school. As I walk across the parking lot I notice Monika giggling outside a coffee shop. It’s a small café near where I live so it’s not uncommon for people to go there. She spots me standing alone and walks towards me. Hey, you should come into the cafe with us! She offers. Uh….okay, I mutter as I follow Monika inside the coffee shop. It’s just Monika and me in the cafe. There aren’t any tables, just some chairs scattered around the room. Monika leads me to the counter to order a drink before sitting down with me in front of the window. Do you want anything to drink? Monika asks to turn to look at me. Hot chocolate please, I tell her. Monika orders a cup of hot chocolate and sets the order down on the table before picking up her phone. While we sit waiting for our drinks our conversation picks back up. So…you must have a really pretty song that you write. Ah…actually I’ve already written a couple of things, I confess. Really? Which ones? Monika looks interested. Some of them are really good, I wrote one called ‘I See a Peter’, it’s about my friend Peter.

What about another one called ‘Breath’?’ Do you like those too? Monika questions curiously. Actually that’s a good idea. I grin. I love singing and I really enjoy creating new songs with my friends. But, I’ll need help writing it so don’t get your hopes up. Monika grins widely as she places her hands under her chin and looks intently at me. I stare back at her confused by her sudden change in demeanor. Why would I get my hopes up? She questions playfully. "Because..we haven’t known each
