About this ebook
OFFICER ROBYN WEAVER expected this case to be just like any other she worked on. Duplicating a mind is a delicate task, and sometimes the copy doesn't quite agree with the new status quo. She didn't expect that she would become so close to the case.
Set in Vancouver after a devastating population crunch, Robyn is just one of millions in Canada who use technology to duplicate their consciousness. These secondary bodies, called Aspects, are seen as an extension of the self and used to supplicate the diminished work force, helping keep the economy alive. At the end of their rental, the Aspect's memories are downloaded back into the original human body, and the artificial body is ready for the next upload. However, some Aspects reject their fate and commit the ultimate crime: going Rogue and keeping the new memories for themselves, splintering away from their original personality. It is up to Officers like Robyn to track down these Rogues and bring them to justice, restoring the memories to the rightful owners.
When Robyn begins her hunt for CHESTER_ROBINSON_A-03, she expects the case to be simple enough- it's only been two days since the Aspect has gone missing, and she knows the bar where he was last spotted. Her perspective quickly changes when she discovers suspicious barkeep and a door where it should not exist. And when she discovers that she has played into the Rogue's hands and has fallen into a trap, Robyn will have to make the ultimate decision-how much do her memories mean to her?
15,600 words.

1.Aspects of Me
Aspects of Me
The metallic tang of synthetic blood stung her tongue as she awoke. Quickly the world came into focus, and a moment later recognition dawned on her face as the realization struck her. So today I am the Aspect.
Already the augmented reality display was at work, replacing what was no doubt a standard gynoid body with the features she recognized as her own. If she was new to the world of Aspects, she would have taken a moment to observe her body, noticing the intricate details that only existed because she knew they were there: the slight discolouration on her wrist from the burns she had received one unlucky day fourteen years ago; the scar that ran from mid calf to knee caused by an accident she had endured; the uneven lengths of her fingernails as she never remembered to trim them. Today, though, she was used to how natural it felt to be her Aspect and had no curiosity towards the synthetic body. Instead she was already climbing out of the chair she had been stationed in, unplugging the neural implant that nested in her head while she slept, and reaching towards the clothes that lay neatly folded on the floor beside her. She remembered picking them out the night before, deciding on the list of things that had to be done before the week was up and then heading to bed.
In her pocket she fished out an ID tag. On it she saw the almost-familiar face that she knew as her own, and below it her name was written:
OFFICER ROBYN WEAVER, A-01
Robyn put the ID away and decided to go over her itinerary. Aspect 1 was going to be in the field working on the Robinson case today, while Controller would be focusing on catching up on some paperwork from the last case. She lightly nibbled on her lip, making sure she wasn't forgetting anything. Since she had only created one Aspect, she would need to begin working quickly. No sense in dawdling in the warehouse any longer, it was time to head to work and start the day.
Other Aspects of acquaintances waved at Robyn and called good morning over to her as she left the building. None stopped to chat -- all rushing to prepare for their own tasks. At least, Robyn assumed they were Aspects since she was winding her way out of the warehouse and it wouldn't make any sense for a Controller to be found here. No, just the extensions of souls resided here.
Outside it was impossible to tell what body was an Aspect and which was a Controller, the augmented reality cleverly masking any tells and concealing the barren world with a colourful visage, superimposing information and art at every place. Once upon a time it may have been distracting, but every human was used to the constant barrage and instead skimmed the virtual world. As she needed, a blue path marked it's route for her and Robyn was directed towards her workplace.
There was always the worry with meeting yourself, especially when an Aspect was used so close to home. The ARD, or Augmented Reality Driver, was able to compensate for this, however, and even if Robyn did run into her Controller-self neither would realize it had happened as they would be hidden from each other's view, unable to interact except as strangers, even the conversation altered so that once the Aspect memories where redeemed back to the Controller, she would not realize that the situation had occurred. It was safer that way.
The building now loomed overhead; what was probably a slate grey, basic cookie-cutter building was instead decorated with visions of humble grandeur -- 'this place is where justice occurs, not flashy like a lightning bolt but as inevitable as the low grumbling of thunder' seemed to be the artists inspiration. The decor shifted every now and then and was currently sporting tones of chocolate and navy, quite different from last months cardinal and noir. Robyn entered the building, flashing her ID at the scanners near the entrance.
Out of habit Robyn had been heading towards her regular office, before remembering she was the Aspect this time adjusted her route accordingly. A different office, set up more plainly but still with all the necessary tools. The chair sank an inch as she
