    The patch of giant ferns was a gift from heaven, even though they were sopping wet and as another stream of droplets fell onto the back of Chaz’s neck, as he lay well-hidden underneath the big fronds, he shivered. Not from the cold dank, pungent odour of the undergrowth but from the sight of three apparitions from hell – man-vamps – flying in and out of the tall trees that surrounded the ferns in which he was hiding.

    They were completely hairless and their human-like faces were casting about, looking. Looking for him.

    The eyes were yellow orbs, a snub nose could barely be seen because of a large top-lip curled right back to expose a set of long canines.

    Red tongues protruding like the heads of a small snake, were flicking in and out of their mouths in a sticky mess of drool and saliva.

    Chaz could see that the wings, giant leathery wings, were attached to the back of their naked bodies that had a yellowish tinge. The hands and feet were of human shape and proportions except for the claw like nails, which had transformed into long razor -sharp talons.

    The beasts from hell flew nearer and Chaz drew back, praying that he hadn’t been seen as
