Now or Never - Sereni T. Nowell
Introduction
Oh, yes, the present now! That elusive, playful sprite which always seems to slip through our fingers just as we think we've got it. If the present moment were a character in a novel, it would be that enigmatic figure everyone is looking for, a cross between Carmen Sandiego and Waldo. So, where in the world is it?
Let's start with the fundamentals. The now
is that sliver of time between remembering that humiliating thing you did at the office party three years ago and thinking about that dental visit next week. That's the one.
The moment that somehow always gets overshadowed by its noisy neighbors, the Past and the Future. Don't they two enjoy hogging the spotlight?
But let's be honest. It's not all their fault. Our brain is structured to recall and learn from the past while also planning and anticipating the future, thanks to its neuronal pathways. It's natural, sweetie! Our forefathers would not have survived if they were always in the 'present,' enjoying the gorgeous flowers without thinking about where they last saw a lion or where their next meal would come from.
However, while this skill was probably essential for avoiding being eaten on the prehistoric savannah, it may be the misery of our modern existence, especially when it causes us to miss out on the beauty and possibilities of the present.
If we had a penny for every time someone said, live in the moment,
I'm sure we'd all be sitting on our individual islands, sipping our favorite drink. And, while it may sound like a catchy bumper sticker, living in the moment is actually quite innovative.
This isn't just another manifesto encouraging you to stop and smell the roses,
though when was the last time you did that? It's a call to arms, or maybe a call to 'quiet'. A cry to recover the fleeting moment that, ironically, is all we truly have. That's how time works, which explains why sometimes if you do not act ‘now’, you may ‘never’ do it!
Have you ever had a day where you're physically there in a place - say, at a dinner table with pals - but your mind is elsewhere? Perhaps you're rehashing an old dispute or worrying about a work deadline. Meanwhile, the laughter, the taste of the food, and the pleasure of company all fade into the background, like an out-of-focus photograph. Everyone has been there. And we've all kicked ourselves later for losing out on life's true delights.
But here's a morsel of knowledge wrapped in a joke: Why didn't the mindfulness practitioner want to play hide and seek? Because it's difficult to hide when you're always in the present!
All kidding aside,
