LIKE MANY, MY introduction to the stranger things in life came through a combination of many influences. It was televisions shows like In Search Of…, or The Twilight Zone, films like The Amityville Horror, or The Exorcist, books such as The Shining or Behold the Man, or simply the stories that my parents shared with the family at gatherings throughout the years. Whatever the influence, the result was a burning curiosity that put me on a path that began with simple ghost hunting outings, to being involved with the successful Ghost Hunters television show, to hosting a nationally syndicated radio program examining these phenomena in detail. Through all of these experiences, I have had the opportunity, and pleasure to meet and talk to people from all over the world who have demonstrated some expertise in one paranormal field or another. And I have learned from each and every one of them.

One of the lingering questions that remain at the top of my list, although I have asked repeatedly during interviews and investigations I have conducted is How is it, and why is it, that some people seem to have an abundance of gifts and sensitivities and then others (like me), demonstrate none? As I had always self-described, I am as sensitive as a brick. A lead-covered, buried in a deep pit covered with mounds of dirt, brick. And while many of my interview subjects assured me I was mistaken, I never found a mechanism by which I could release what sensitivities may indeed lie dormant inside myself.

You may point out that I have been on hundreds of paranormal investigations, and I have had many experiences that can only be explained as paranormal…and you would be right. Each of those experiences I feel, however, was one that presented itself to me. As if the energy behind the phenomenon said, Hey JV. Wake up and look over here! Not to mention that many of those experiences were the result of some piece of electronic equipment that had to tell me to be aware of what may or may not be happening around me.

So I always returned to my original sentiment – I am as sensitive as a brick. Then my mother died.

My family went through a difficult few years. My father was diagnosed with cancer and within a year passed away. He was only in his sixties. Later that year, my uncle (my mother’s brother, my godfather and business partner) was diagnosed with ALS and within 9 months he was taken from us. While these losses were very difficult on me personally, they were crushing to my mother. Losing her husband of 50 years was tragic enough, but then to lose her brother, who she looked to as a source of comfort and support in the absence of my dad, seemed to be too much for one person. But it got worse, within months of that loss, my mother got sick. I don’t know whether the back-to-back tragedies were just too much for her, or if this was some sort of divine plan, but either way, just as my father and Uncle before her, the uniqueness of her diagnoses left us with little hope. After being bedridden for a year, three short years after my father and two years after my uncle, my mother passed away in the hospital, while I held her hand. She was too young and died heartbroken.

I don’t share that story for sympathy. I share it because it was an awakening for me. For it was that morning in 2017 that I had an experience that opened my eyes to the possibility that I was in fact NOT as sensitive as a brick, but I may just not have opened my eyes, and my heart, to what exists in all of us. And that it took this experience, while life slipped from my mother, for me to recognize it. It was during those last few moments, as I watched my mother’s heartrate lower, her breathing become shallower, and as tears formed in my eyes that my awakening came. When the numbers on the monitor slipped to zero, and I watched mom draw her last breath, I said my final goodbye. And, to my complete amazement, mom kissed me. Yes, her body has expired, but as she left, in a room in which no doors or windows were open; in a room in which I had not felt any air movement for the 4 days I was in there with her, a deliberate and unmistakable breeze brushed across my face. It was my mom. It was her kiss. She said goodbye. And my eyes opened.

You may consider yourself more (or even less) sensitive than a brick. You may or may not have had experiences that you consider to be paranormal or spiritual and you want to learn more about them and yourself. You may be just beginning your journey of self-exploration. Whatever answers or affirmations you seek, the key is to not close your eyes, your mind, or your heart to what is possible. My awakening was just the beginning of my journey. And it was an act of fate that shortly after my experiences in that hospital room that I interviewed John Russell for the first time. John confirmed for me, although he probably didn’t know it at the time, that my experiences were real and that I was capable of shedding the psychic-cocoon that I had placed around myself.

CHAPTER 1

Psychometry

Psychometry: divination of facts concerning an object or its owner through contact with or proximity to the object.

PSYCHOMETRY IS NOT a difficult art to learn, but to become proficient a person has to be willing to put in the time required to learn how it’s done and to continue to develop the skill. As in all things practice and consistency is the key.

As I’ll explain later on, psychometry is a valuable skill that has many real-world applications. But first, let’s learn how to perform psychometry.

You’re going to need to enlist the aid of a friend; and not just any friend. The friend you select has to have special qualities. First, your friend needs to have a really good memory. They must be able to accurately and reliably recall specific people, facts, and incidents associated with an object that they will bring to you for you to practice with. So don’t choose the friend who can’t remember where they’ve left their car keys every day.

Second, the friend that you choose to help you should be someone who believes in the paranormal and in psychic abilities. Obviously, it won’t do any good to attempt to learn the practice of psychometry with someone who is a disbeliever or worse yet one who openly scoffs.

Third, choose a friend who will be completely honest with you about your hits and misses. You need someone who won’t bring any preconceived agenda to your sessions: You don’t want a friend who is so hopeful that you’ll achieve positive results that they will fudge things and tell you that your hit is accurate when in fact, it’s not. You also don’t want someone who will give you the close, but no cigar as an accurate hit. You want someone who will tell you if you’re wrong, but also someone honest enough to tell you that they don’t know about a particular vision you’ve received, but who is willing to investigate further to see if your input can be validated.

Also it will help if you take your sessions seriously; you can be light-hearted and have fun while learning, yes, but don’t act like it’s a party game or some kind of gimmick. Psychometry is a serious and valuable psychic tool that, as I’ve said, has real-world applications, and we’ll get to those after you learn how.

When learning it should be just you and your friend; no one else: no spouse; no kids; no other friends.

And it’s absolutely crucial that there be no distractions during your session, which means turning off cell phones, radios, TVs, music, etc. You’re going to need to be able to concentrate and to focus on the task at hand. Once you’ve become fairly adept at the art you can demonstrate it under less than ideal conditions: in a noisy, crowded restaurant for example, such as I once did.

I was at the bar in a crowded restaurant, enjoying libations with a friend of mine when a mutual friend of ours walked in. We asked her to join us, and in the course of our conversation we complimented her on a beautiful ring she was wearing. She thanked us and was about to tell us about the ring when I stopped her.

Hand me the ring, I said.

She did, and this is what I told her.

The ring is new, not old. You bought this on a shopping trip, but not here in town; you bought this while on an out-of-town shopping trip. You went to Austin about two weeks ago. It was a bright, sunshiny day for the whole trip. But you didn’t buy this ring in a store. You went to a street vendor’s cart and that is where you saw and purchased this ring.

She—although a believer in the paranormal and psychic powers—was nevertheless amazed and confirmed that everything that I had told her was true. My drinking buddy was likewise impressed.

Let’s get you started.

Ask your friend to bring you an object with which they’re intimately acquainted, preferably something that they’ve owned and treasured for quite some time. Tell them not to bring an object about which they’re only vaguely knowledgeable; for example, their grandfather’s watch. They may know that the watch did indeed belong to their grandfather, that he divorced their grandmother after only two years of marriage, and that he worked as a welder. Beyond that, they know nothing else. They won’t be able to verify any intimate family details that you may perceive.

No, what you need is for your friend to bring you an object that they know many facts about: how long they’ve owned it; where it came from…whether or not it was a gift, or did they buy it for themselves; were they with anyone else when they bought it or received it; what have been the family events, emotions, trials, tribulations, celebrations, and other circumstances through which the object accompanied them during their life’s journey.
