Nursing Time Savers - Karl Evens
PART I
Strategic Approaches to Manage Your Time
How Did All This Shit Get Done (Starting the Day Right)
When I was in school, my teacher used to say, It will take you about five-to-seven years to become proficient at being a nurse.
When I was precepted, my preceptor use to say, I’ve been doing this for over a decade, and I still don’t fully have the hang of it.
Here is a story from my wife during her first year as a nurse. "I picked up the phone at eight thirty a.m. on my day off. The charge RN said, ‘Hmmm, you know you’re supposed to be working, right? I was about to mark you as a no call, no show. We are already short staffed; please tell me you’re coming.’ As I drove to work, I couldn’t help feeling stressed out knowing this day was going to be miserable.
It was discouraging knowing nothing would be done on my patients and that the day was just going to be a never-ending game of catch up until seven p.m. I got to work at around nine forty- five a.m. To my surprise, all my medicines were given, all my assessments were done, and like a cherry crowning a sundae, all my patients’ assessments were completed and charted. It was one of the easiest days I have ever had. My charge nurse’s ability to take care of all the responsibilities of being the charge and find the time to manage my whole group was inspiring. Being the over ambitious new graduate that I was, I told myself, If she can do it so can I!
But how the fuck did she get all this done in so little time? What did I have to do to achieve such a goal? That day was the origin to my journey to become the most proficient nurse I could be.
My wife’s story was an inspiration to solving my many problems as a new nurse. I was always sacrificing bathroom breaks. I was ignoring my hunger pains with the goal of being timely to all my patients’ needs. I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. The extra miles I ran for my patients were all for nothing.
I never seem to satisfy all my patients’ needs. I was late on many tasks and had many dissatisfied coworkers and patients alike. Some doctors would loath knowing that I was assigned some of their patients especially this full of herself general surgeon who was always rude and belittling. Mostly because she brought the hospital beacoup bucks and that made her above the law of proper etiquette and decency towards nurses she didn’t like. All that to say, I was going above and beyond and had nothing to show for it. Whereas some nurses seem to be working half as much but received double the accolades from staff, doctors, and patients. I was losing hope; even with all the self-sacrifices I did for the betterment of my patients, none of it made me feel like a martyr. I just felt discourage and out of touch with my fellow nurses and felt like I would never get to feel comfortable in this new role that I busted my ass tirelessly to achieve. My wife and I decided that, by any means necessary, we would give it are all to be as proficient as her charge nurse. To be honest, at the end of the day, my ultimate goal was to never leave work late again.
I had to take a good look at what I was doing while humbly observing and taking notes on how the best nurses on my floor practiced. After weeks of analyzing how the best nurses on my unit manage their days, I realized I had to change many things to achieve the impossible task of being as good as my charge. Before that day, I felt depressed and defeated working as a RN. I also felt aggravated by the teachings of my nursing schoolteachers and preceptors who sugarcoated everything and were dismissive about what I could do to improve myself. It was always a notion of, Only experience can make you a proficient nurse.
I knew that statement had some fallacies once I discovered that there were seasoned and well experienced nurses on my unit who were also terrible at time
