In a few short moments, you drift off into a peaceful sleep. The worries of the day vanish, and your mind and body are at rest for the entire night.

This sounds more like a dream for most people. It can be hard to get optimal sleep in this modern age. Some people have trouble sleeping through the night because of things like a crying baby or a toddler who won’t go to bed. How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? Do you feel well-rested? Or do you feel like you were tossing and turning all night? Do you feel invigorated, ready to start your day, or weighed down by poor sleep?

Sleep is one of the most important parts of a healthy life, whether you’re an early bird or a night owl. Despite its importance, sleep is one of the most undervalued aspects of modern schedules. We often sacrifice sleep for other things like work, family responsibilities, and even technological distractions.

Indeed, exercise, healthy eating, and finding constructive ways to cope with emotions and stress are all important during the day. However, allowing your mind and body to rest and recover at night is vital. Some may believe the only outcome of poor sleep is feeling tired or sluggish the next day. Yet, sleep deprivation has been linked to various health issues.

Sleeping is more than just getting our beauty rest. When we sleep, our brains and bodies go through significant processes essential for growth, learning and memory, and recovery of bodily systems. Some may think it’s a luxury to get quality sleep, but sleep should be viewed not as a luxury but as a necessity—as crucial for survival as food and water.

As we sleep, our brains process the day’s information, stimuli, and memories. The brain sorts through important details and memories, clearing out waste and excess information to refresh the mind and start fresh in the morning. These processes can be thought of as small but necessary housekeeping items that the brain must complete to keep the rest of the house (the brain) functioning properly. If we miss out on sleep, we aren’t giving the brain ample time to refresh or clear away waste, which can ultimately make it more difficult to function properly the next day.

Giving your body a break by getting a good night’s sleep will help major systems function as they should. Relaxed, deep sleep allows the body to rest, rejuvenating cells as our muscles relax and we take slow, deep breaths. When we cut these processes short, the body doesn’t have time to recuperate, causing problems in the long run.

Nighttime sleep is not just about laying your head down on the pillow and waiting for the morning to start it all over again. It is a complex and constantly changing process. During the night, humans experience several levels of sleep that help the brain and body rest and recover.
