The origins of the Knights Templar
The story of the Knights Templar begins in the early 12th century, during the Crusades, a series of military campaigns waged by Christian Europe against the Islamic world in the Middle East. In 1099, the city of Jerusalem was captured by the Crusaders, and a Latin Christian kingdom was established in the Holy Land.
The defense of this new kingdom was entrusted to various orders of knights, who were given the task of protecting pilgrims traveling to and from Jerusalem. One of these orders was the Knights Hospitaller, who provided medical care to the sick and wounded. Another was the Knights of the Temple of Solomon, who were tasked with protecting the Temple Mount, the site of the biblical Temple of Solomon.
The origins of the Knights Templar can be traced back to this latter order. In 1119, a small group of knights approached the King of Jerusalem, Baldwin II, with a proposal to establish a new order of knights, dedicated to protecting pilgrims and the Holy Land. The King granted them permission to set up their headquarters on the Temple Mount, in the ruins of the Temple of Solomon.
The new order was named the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, or the Knights Templar for short. They were granted permission to wear a distinctive white mantle with a red cross, and their rules and regulations were based on those of the Cistercian monastic order.
The early years of the Knights Templar were marked by hardship and struggle. They were a small and poorly funded order, and their efforts to protect pilgrims were met with hostility from the Muslim rulers of the region. However, their fortunes began to turn around in the 1130s, when they received a significant donation of land from the Count of Champagne. This donation was the beginning of a trend that would see the Knights Templar become one of the wealthiest and most powerful orders in Europe.
