ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Hunter Thompson, Volume 3, was inspired by a conversation with a friend. She was working in an area of Los Angeles frequented by actor Johnny Depp. Both Mr. Depp and Bill Murray have had movie roles playing Hunter Thompson.
I expressed to Kathleen my wish to get copies of my Hunter S. Thompson books to Mr. Depp.
At the same time, I decided to make Hunter the first person narrator of the third book in the series. In Volume’s I & II the narrator is Hunter’s friend and blood brother, Jordan.
I must thank Kathleen M.M. for this third book, The Return of Hunter S. Thompson, An Untold Story of Nazi Hunting.
We’ll see where things go from here. For now, the good news is that Hunter is back. For real. And he’s talking. Although things have gotten a little weird in his head, remember what he told us years ago: When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Let’s listen.
Introduction
This is the third book in a series dealing with a young Hunter S. Thompson as a Nazi hunter in 1958. He is 21 years old, out of the Air Force and following through on a commitment he made with his friend Jordan to hunt down Nazis when they grew up.
The mentor for Hunter and Jordan is Tom Charlebois, formerly French Resistance, World War II. Tom is the manager of a hotel in London, El Duque, the Duke Hotel.
Introduction
So here I am. I feel like I’ve been missing. That’s okay. I know where I am and what’s happening. Sorta. I mean, as I look out the window from my favorite seat at the bar, I see a lot of my friends smiling and waving at me. It’s puzzling because some of them are gone from this world. That’s okay though. It all seems so natural even though it may not be. If this is some sort of hallucination, it is by far the best ever. Everything is clear, but weird. Like what the hell is Nixon doing here? First, he smiles, then waves, and finally flips me off, but he doesn’t seem to mean it. He disappears into the crowd, and all I see are my friends, a lot of them. So many that I ask Barry the bartender for some napkins to write on. I need to write the names down. I did not realize I had so many friends. I won’t list them now, but I will place the napkins in a large envelope and attach it to my thought notes. I’m not sure how my thoughts get on paper, but as I look at the long mirror in front of me behind the bar, I can see the words of my thoughts in reflection on the ceiling. They are printed on the left side and handwritten on the right. Funny, because I have never seen that before. Like a magic trick. I need to tell somebody about this phenomenon.
But nobody is talking to me. I don’t mean to complain; I like being able to hear myself think, you know. It turns out that old trite saying really means something very powerful.
Now what? I have reawakened from a ridiculously long slumber. Maybe I was locked up like old Randle Patrick McMurphy (Mac) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. And maybe then I got into an argument with management (nurse Ratchet) when she refused to turn on the World Series on the TV in the commons. So, of course, then I would have done my best Jack Nicholson screaming out a fictional play-by-play of the Yankees and Dodgers with Sandy Colfax pitching for the Dodgers and Mickey Mantle hitting a homerun for the Yanks. One of my all-time favorite movie scenes that I know by heart.
I think that damn nurse Ratchet probably must have drugged me up with a Mickey Finn. She probably hates the Yankees so much that she thought it would be funny to give this Mickey Mantle fan a Mickey Finn. Hell with her.
Now that I’ve regained my freedom, there are several things I need or want to do. There are things to realize. These are all on a list in my head which I will be glad to produce if requested. Time has really come today. Just like the Chambers Brothers said.
Currently, I seem to be busy in my twenty-first year. Apparently, I have been fighting Nazis with an old classmate from second grade, Jordan Josin. It seems we have been pretty damn successful. I feel proud of my imaginary younger self. I think it’s a great idea for me to spend some of my youth Nazi hunting. It will be good preparation for my later life.
Chapter 1
WE’RE BACK—JACK
Sister, Sister
We have just finished taking down the Bank of Saxony in Hawaii, and now the next mission awaits.
Jordan has been telling the story of our Nazi hunting. He has done a good job. Now it’s my turn to tell the story in this next part of our journey.
It all goes back to second grade. That got glossed over previously. I don’t know if people understand how profound this tale is. The fact is we were scared to our souls when Sister Ansilio told us about Nazis and how they killed her brother in Normandy, France. She told us these bad men were killing families over in far-away Europe. We were so shocked to hear this that we couldn’t go on living knowing the world was such a bad place, but Sister convinced us we could help bring justice to the world.
When you grow up, Hunter and Jordan, you can help bring Nazis to justice. Many of them have escaped prosecution for their crimes. They also stole money and everything they could take from their victims.
But how can we do anything?
Jordan asked.
Talk to your parents. They know about these bad men. And they may know my brother’s friend who was in the Resistance.
I don’t think we know about Resistance,
I said.
We don’t teach the Resistance in second grade, boys.
I know what it is,
Jordan said. My dad said they’re saving us Jews.
Yes, they are, and they are going after Nazis. Yes, they are, boys.
So that’s what we can do when we grow up a little more,
I said. We’ll do Resistance.
Right, Jordy?
We promise we will, Sister. We’ll keep the promise, too. Maybe we’ll even join Resistance.
"Those are all excellent ideas, boys. I’m very proud of you. I will pray the good Lord looks out for you and keeps
