Rhythm of My Heart - S.M. Hogben

    Bored

You sit and stare way into space,

    Oblivious of the human race,

A vacant look upon your face.

    Bored—

Nothing to think about, nothing to do!

    Everyone’s busy except for you.

No movements, expressions, things seem blue,

    Bored—

No books to read, no thoughts to think.

Eyes are fixed, don’t even blink,

Can’t be bothered getting a drink,

    Bored—

Monday to Friday, it’s always the same,

Having to work is such a pain,

Can’t afford to stay home, what a shame,

    Bored—

Winning lotto would be a change,

    Things in life to rearrange,

Our sanity now we could gain.

    Not Bored—

    Champagne

    (For My Son)

A golden moon in the ink-black skies,

On soft damp sand, the champagne lies.

It froths and bubbles like silky fine lace,

Washing away troubles in the dark quiet place.

    The gentle murmurs echo around

The sounds of the sea where peace abounds,

On those silver sounds, to stand alone there,

With your toes in champagne, and the breeze in your hair.

Tall shadows of trees fringe around the bay,

The sights and the sounds at the close of the day,

These simple pleasures are both wild and free.

There, and enjoyment, for you and for me.

If trouble besets you and life’s really tough,

The remedy is simple, it’s pleasure enough.

Wash away your problems again and again,

With the moon, silver sand, and your toes in champagne.

    Christmas Past

Memories of Christmas past, are treasures that will always be,

Of friends, family and grandchildren who mean so much to me.

A house that’s filled with laughter and the smells of Christmas baking

Of Christmas presents and candy canes, the children keep on taking.

The sisters are helping with the meal, the men are drinking beer and resting

The floor is covered with paper, the toys are there for the testing

The boys are huddled in a group, up to no good I will be bound,

While the girls are playing happily, hardly making a sound.

Whispering together, sharing girly secrets and other things,

All the time we wait to see what horrors the boys will bring.

Finally, they come creeping in, covered in dirt and quite dishevelled,

Bearing worms and bugs from the back yard, sneaky little devils.

We intercept this little plot just to keep the peace,

And send them along their way, their bounty to release.

The meal is cooked at long last, everyone is hungry,

To see the goodies the sisters have made.

So, boys please be too greedy.

There is turkey and ham, salad and vegies, and lots of other treats,

All laid out neatly for everyone to eat.

So, fill the plates and enjoy the meal, its Xmas day of course.

We will feed the kids later when they finish playing with their toys.

The men are sleeping off the feast, open mouths and snoring loudly,

While babies nap soundly on the bed, we can relax around,

And finally have a chat, a drink and rest, a time we have really earned.

Christmas day is over, cars are packed up tight

The kids are buckled in, the day has gone just right.

I do not envy their rides home, kids are tired and cross,

The house is a mess and I have heaps of crap to toss.

The work is done now and the house is back to neat,
