A resounding slap reverberated through the surrounding tobacco fields, startling a flock of birds perched on a nearby telephone pole. Inside Matriarch Oakwood Estate, the main house boasted a kitchen adorned with cherry-stained oak. Grandson sat at the oakwood dining table, gingerly massaging his jaw. Despite his tall and frail stature, he always maintained a dapper appearance because Grandmother wouldn’t have it any other way. His navy-blue polka-dotted bow tie was slanted forty-five degrees. Blood and saliva from his busted lip had splattered onto the detachable collar of his white Winchester button-down shirt, but his black pinstriped pants and loafers were spared the spittle. While Grandson would typically shed tears when hurt, this time he was too stunned to cry. He had moved in with his grandmother in 1932, and in the five years since, she had never laid a hand on him.
Grandmother was dressed in a formfitting white party dress embellished with a floral motif. The dress was special delivered from Ann Lowe's fashion boutique in New York. Tears welled up in the Grandson's eyes as he questioned his grandmother, asking, Grandma, why did you hit me?
With a stern glare, she retorted, Five years. Five years you've been living with me, and you ain’t noticed nothing?
She gestured with frustration, emphasizing the absurdity
