Get It Done Write That Book - Michael Raymond
Getting Started
This is about writing a book, the one you have been percolating in your head, perhaps for years. I am going to help you to get it done. No more excuses.
You have always wanted to write a book. For various reasons, you never did or, more likely, started and tossed your beginnings. Why?
Perhaps you felt unworthy, having no formal training in writing. It could be that you did try some formal training or joined writing workshops or groups. That experience may have put you off.
Some people paint, others build things. You want to write. There are few things more rewarding than creating something.
Here’s a thought; the reader and not the experts determine if your work is enjoyable. Think about it. In a bookstore, what prompts you to buy one book over the other?
We are drawn to the covers, the titles, and the text on the front or back covers describing the contents. We do not often flip open a book and read a while before deciding to buy.
What I am saying is; write your story and if it is good, your readers will let you know it. You will know it. If you are a writer, you are also a reader. The books and types of stories that you are drawn to is what you should write.
Here’s some good advice; don’t judge your work until it is finished. During the writing, avoid deciding if it is a load of crap. Don’t let someone else read any portion of it until it is finished. It won’t be ready for judgment, and neither are you.
So why is my system different than others? It isn’t radically different. I am just going to take you through the process and you will get your story done. Period.
Let’s get going. You won’t have to write every day. Once you get going, though, you will likely want to.
Why use my method?
I am going to show you the easy way to write your book. My method delays the difficult parts, such as format and style, letting you concentrate on getting your ideas down.
If you are writing non-fiction the concepts still apply. Write and build your book from the skeleton outwards. Flesh it out later.
You have no story, no book, unless you write it. Too often we give up because we are trying to do it all at the same time. We are getting the story down while building characters, relationships, plot, sub-plot, back-stories, and all the while worrying about spelling and grammar too.
No wonder you couldn’t get past the beginning or didn’t know where to start!
The gist of the concept is that nothing will get done unless
