    Remembering Joseph Hansom by Penelope Harris

    Joseph Hansom was a Victorian architect and contemporary of Gladstone. Aptly described ‘an unfortunate kind of a genius’, Hansom was the nineteenth-century Catholic architect who also designed the hansom cab. Architecture was his life and he fought against all odds to promote both his vocation and his profession. Competition came from the Pugin family, amidst rapid social and economic change, driven by the technology of the industrial revolution.
