It's Begun - Lana J Thomas
Chapter One
Phase One
Shades of grey consume the South African sky. The sun, though intense, hovers bleakly behind the dense clouds. The hues of light that pervade the area are golden with hints of pink and light green. Swirls of light grow intense and the sounds of a windstorm, though loud, cannot drown out the sounds of the native drums that pound to a feverish crescendo. In a meadow, in the midst of the Acacia trees and green grasses, young Maasai boys are being prepared to take part in an ancient ritualistic ceremony. Each young child is painted on his shaved head and neck with red streaks of clay and white chalk.
The symbols on their bodies are time honored by the tribesmen who etch the slippery paints on the boy’s heads. The sacred manhood ceremony is about to begin. One boy fidgets and squirms while he awaits his turn to be chosen for the traditional lion hunt. The night before, he had dreamed from memory about years before and being sanctified with the compulsory circumcision performed with chiseled obsidian stone. Many boys, some of them his friends, died from infection and worse. Even the threat of death does not stop the ritual.
Ever since that nightmarish time, he has proven himself by guarding the cattle and fighting off predators. Today, a day so long awaited, he will prove his manhood by killing a massive lion using only his spear and a shield. The group of young men, now selected, stand tall in the center of the circle of tribesmen and elders. The four boys look anxious and yet restrain their fears and nervousness to prove their manhood and not embarrass their families.
Today, if they are strong and courageous they will be known for life as a positive force in their community. If they do not succeed, the boys will not be acknowledged except in ridicule and shame. Strangely, one boy is not at all afraid. Again, echoes of the drums beat loudly, and the dance is now in full swing. The tribe is so engrossed in the ceremony none of the men or women notices the unusual clouds forming over the prairie nearby.
Matching the intensity of the drums, the sky darkens, and mysterious low hanging swirling clouds disperse in the center like hands parting curtains on a massive stage. A single narrow light beam descends to Earth, covering the area in thick mist. The wind suddenly becomes still. The turbulent vapor does not look or feel anything like rain or fog and no moisture is present in the hot summer air. Out of seemingly nowhere, created out of thin air, a tiny community appears. Six small huts, reminiscent of dome tents, are situated side by side and a store of supplies are stacked neatly in the center of the field. Their windows are convex and create a natural source of light from the sunshine.
A picture containing outdoor, sky, ground, mountain Description automatically generatedINCREDULOUSLY, SIX figures miraculously appear in the mist. Deceptively innocent looking, the Stepins, as they are known, consist of young people, males, and females, by appearance only, and one adult. Though young, they are well trained, and they stand with their faces set in a determined stare as if they have every right to be there. No attempt is made to disguise their new village because they know it will go undetected as if invisible to any passersby. They are secure in the fact that the mist provides a dome of seclusion and invisibility to their plans and presence.
Furthermore, they know how to hide themselves if there is any threat of danger by simply blending with their surroundings. They stand in formation for a moment to assess the environment and determine the first steps to be taken in the mission they came to complete.
Everything is different, so different from anything they are familiar with. The sky is a different color, and the clouds seem so distant. The sun above them looks alien and larger than they are accustomed to. They feel lightheaded and unsure of their feet beneath them. Even time seems to move more slowly, and they wait for their bodies to shift at the same pace in which the planet and gravity pull at them. The heat from the sun penetrates their bodies deeply and their eyes burn from the intensity. They knowingly take each other’s hands, close their eyes tightly and exhale softly. The mist engulfs them, swirls amongst them, and evaporates into their forms. The air clears and they relax. Breathing is easier now and they appear stronger and more settled.
EXCEPT FOR THEIR LONGER arms, their form is human in shape, but they have less mass than humans do. Though their forms are solid, they are merely energy patterns without bone and flesh, and they can move silently as if they do not touch the soil beneath their feet. Compared to humans, they are much taller with similar features except for their small round cat shaped eyes and irises of total black. They are beautiful! Now more acclimated, they move to begin gathering bags and crates from the pile of supplies, and then each one selects a hut as their own and settles in.
In minutes, when the drums and chanting nearby capture their attention, they exit the huts and move closely together to discuss what they hear. All eyes are focused on the direction the sounds are coming from. The tall willowy adult, Genteel, intervenes and in a rough tone says, Do not be distracted by the sounds you hear. We have only just arrived in this dimension, and you have duties you must attend to now. You know we are not to make ourselves known to humans.
Tula, a wild haired, tall slim, dark-skinned female takes a step closer to the adult chaperone. Genteel, she begins,
I know we have only just arrived, but we did not expect to hear such sounds. This could be a great opportunity, so, just to observe and satisfy our curiosity; may we go and investigate? We will just observe and not intervene. We can disguise ourselves. Please, can we just go look?"
Genteel
GENTEEL BARKS, MY duty here is to protect you. I made that vow, and I will keep it! My answer is no. Disguising yourselves may not be that easy yet.
Disappointed, Tula looks to other young Stepins for support, but receives none, yet she lingers. Genteel impatiently says, Your orders are clear Tula, do not ignore me again.
Apparently, resigning herself Tula picks up her pack. Moving to the hut nearest the trees and, as is always true with her defiant, independent nature, she waits until the others are preoccupied and plans to slip away into the trees undetected. She places her backpack in a drawer and plants her feet to steady herself. Holding her hands above her head she makes gestures that resemble earthly sign language. She then moves her hands slowly down her body and her transformation begins.
Tula
HER FORM BECOMES MORE dense and solid. She has even darker skin and glittery skin near her eyes and neck regions. Her hair is now forming and is curly and unruly. Her skin feels restrictive and tight. She studies her surprising features and sees her hands glitter too. She smoothed her hair back, then feels her body to discover who she is becoming. When she has adjusted to the stronger feeling the form grants her on earth, in her impatience she peeks out her door. When no one is in sight, she slips out and heads directly for jungle.
Discreetly and silently following the sound of the drums through the trees she discovers the Maasai tribe gathered around the fire. She watches in amazement. Surprisingly, the drums stir her in a way she has never reacted before. Tula feels drawn to the scene and ritual and stands momentarily with her mouth gaping and her eyes opened wide. Suddenly, she experiences a sense of dread that causes her to regain focus on her training. As directed before she came to Earth, she begins to observe every detail to determine what purpose the ritual has.
Then, she notices the focus of everyone’s attention. In the center of the crowd stand four young boys with spears and shields tightly clenched to their chests.
