SHE FEARS LOVE AS IT TICKLES - SANDRA GORCZYNSKI

    CHAPTER 1

Editor of the New York Express Kyle Freeman sat across from her at his desk, wearing the laissez-faire attitude that most men drenched themselves in when they first saw her and weren't expecting her to be both attractive and competent. She calculated that he would be 55 if he were 25 years older than she was. Aside from his purposefully unimpressed demeanor intended to make her feel fortunate to be in his presence, he clenched his pecs with the effort of a man trying to pass kidney stones.

There was only one issue with that strategy in this case: he requested to meet her.

"One of my coworkers advised that we get together. Jamie Valentino was the pervert in your last story, wasn't he?--prisoned for a few years, am I right?he declared.

'Eighteen. However, that wasn't my final tale.

So you're a bounty hunter and a journalist in one? Impressive.'

It was an anomaly. I like to write political articles.

I take it you're looking for a place to live?I mean in a journalistic sense.

Why do you think that? The best way to end a sentence was with a question, she said.

Security is important since it's important to know where one's next paycheck is coming from.

    I've never worried about it.

"It ought to. Rock bands who are successful never know which of their albums will be their first to bomb.

How soon into a conversation someone started using metaphors was one way Haley determined where managers of all kinds placed on the dickhead scale.

I don't follow rock music, she began, adding, I might consider a permanent position if it were possible to find a place with a balanced viewpoint, as she watched the sarcasm sail over his head as he prepared to mansplain his point.

    We have balance, Freeman said.

    She conveyed skepticism.

It's useless to be undecided, Ms. Scott. You must choose a side.

    'Why?'

It implies that there is always news to report.

You might sensationalize. And now we are aware of the consequences of trouble-making by the media.

Freeman became hot under the collar. 'News outlets weren't to blame,' someone said. We oppose the assassination of presidential hopefuls.

Haley allowed the hush to last.

Whatever degree of a communist he may have been

The unpleasant aftertaste of biting his tongue ever since the backlash had occurred was there. For a small period of time, extremists were shamed into hiding their distorted viewpoints. But as usual, time goes quickly and ignorance endures forever.

I don't belong to any political party, Haley remarked. I support the truth, as any journalist should, so there. I am aware that when your man held the White House, facts ceased to exist, and regrettably, the other side further pushed us all into the abyss when it began to play the same game--

    He interrupted, Miss.

    Mrs., she clarified.

    'Mrs--'

Nevertheless, I am optimistic that this nation will return to normalcy. I write for the folks who make up the true silent majority—those who don't spend their time yelling like babies trying to get attention.

Freeman grinned in a way that suggested he could have once had the same perspective as she had. And because of that, if you keep going in that direction, you'll disappear. No one is rewarded any more for being a saint. How many notable journalists with those priorities can you think of?'

There is definitely no one here, she said.

Journalists here are known for serious stories and aren't the profession's laughing stock because they deviate into kink freak baiting!'

Although Haley could feel her cheeks getting redder, she made every effort to contain her rage. Mr. Hughes, I don't consider the dishonest boot-licking of fanatics who wish to destroy the nation while feigning to save it serious journalism.

    Good morning, Mrs. Scott.

Haley noticed a small figure lingering in the Express' lobby while she waited for the elevator, but it was soon too evident to ignore.

A young woman holding a stack of laptops and looking at her with wide brown eyes had pixie-punk hair and black-painted fingernails. Haley was envious of the broad shoulders and gym bunny curves of her rower. She walked back and forth, like she was either having trouble balancing or wanted to go to the bathroom.

Can I assist you?, Haley said.

No thanks. They aren't really that hefty!', the girl uttered.

You're staring at me, I wanted to say.

'Am I? Sorry. I was walking by when... Haley Scott, are you not?'

Haley felt honored because it was unusual for her to be recognized.

    'I am. You are, then?'

You're taller than I anticipated, wow. Do you remember the dated sitcom Friends?'

'Yesss...?Haley drew out the term with fascination, but she was irritated by the reference to Friends being really old.

You resemble the actress that plays Sandra a lot, my friend.

    Courtney Cox

Yes, that is she. You know, before all the plastic surgery.

    Yes, I am aware.

The young woman approached with her hand outstretched and said, Jaz, dropping the laptops onto the carpet where she was standing. I'm Jaz Seymour. I really enjoy your work!'

It appears that I'm well-liked in this area.

    You're coming here to work?'

    'No.'

Listen, do you ever work with other people? Jaz's deflation soon rebounded into a fresh burst of vigor.'

Haley responded, I'm afraid not, feeling a twinge of regret at having broken this young woman's dreams twice in the course of two questions. Although Haley's response was technically I haven't yet, she didn't want to bring up the uncomfortable topic of working with inexperienced individuals.

    CHAPTER 2

Can I at least buy you a coffee?Jaz enquired.

When there was a huge clatter, Haley was just about to complete the triple hat trick. Kyle Freeman knocked over the pile of laptops while he was walking and conversing with a coworker.

Who abandoned these here?' he yelled at the front desk agent, who then turned to stare at Jaz. Freeman followed Haley's line of sight and was even more enraged to learn that Haley had seen what had happened.

Is this where the business computers are, Jaz?'

    JAZ REDUCED. 'No, Sir.'

"Move them, please! He said while adjusting his tie. He went away after casting one more resentful glance Haley's way.

Haley decided she had somewhere else to be that morning as she stared down at the subdued Jaz. Yes, we can get a coffee.

Jaz met up with Haley in the coffee shop across the street thirty minutes later. Despite the Northeast's current heat wave, they insisted on getting their beverages to go and wandered into Central Park before lunchtime. Haley smirked as she realized that Jaz's nervous babbling wouldn't stop until her face was completely filled with food.

You've got extremely enormous feet, Jaz remarked after swallowing her most recent mouthful.

Haley's grin vanished. You just speak whatever comes to mind, isn't that right?'

'Sorry. Yeah, I guess I do.

Possibly since you are nearly a foot shorter than me, they just appear large to you.

Jaz took another look at Haley's footwear. No, objectively speaking, they're big.

"Jaz, what are we doing here?Haley lost her cool.

I have a lead on a story, but nobody at the Express takes me seriously, I admit.

Unsurprised, Haley responded, Hm. "What's that?'

You swear you won't take it and run, I asked.'

    Jaz, yes.

There is a scheme to rig the next general election, Jaz said while scanning the area to make sure no one was nearby.

While taking a drink of her coffee, Haley replied, Tell me something new.

I am aware, but this time is different.

They are all quite serious. They're no longer a novelty, which is a shame.

    Jaz had trouble speaking.

Tell me what you have, Haley commanded.

    You know Stella Decla, right?'

It goes without saying that she was familiar with Stella Decla, a.k.a. Decla the Loon, a Florida legislator and the unstoppable spokesperson for right-wing conspiracy nuts who continued to spew unfounded and illogical rants even after the assassination of the Democratic presidential candidate. Undoubtedly, a significant movement to the left and an unparalleled string of victories for the Democratic party were influenced by her and many who behaved similarly during one of the tenseest periods in US history.

To the dismay of Star Wars fans, however, a paradoxical happenstance made her the face of what right-wing news agencies were calling a new hope for the Republican Party as a result of the inevitable pendulum of politics and her refusal to be subdued by those in her party with any semblance of integrity.

You do know her, Jaz said in response to her own inquiry. Right. No doubt. Well, one of my college friends works in her division. Evidently, she enjoys the company of many young men.

A glorified soccer mom who is bottle blonde and has collagen lips. That's unexpected,

    'Is it?Jaz enquired.

You haven't been a journalist for very long, Jaz, have you?'

Jaz reddened. He overheard a talk that he shouldn't have, anyway.

To allow two mounted police officers to pass, they dispersed. While Jaz nearly fell into a bush by the path, both officers grinned at Haley. Jaz kept her composure as Haley watched them leave.

    Go ahead, Haley said.

She met with a group of individuals, and they talked about manipulating the swing states.

Who else participated at the meeting?'

Although he was unable to see everyone, he was able to identify Republicans from other swing states as well as Lady Diamond—Susanna Tysinger from Jackal News. They discussed frightening election officials physically and using blackmail.

Haley nibbled her inner cheek very delicately. Jaz admired her soft lips and the way inspiration glistened in her blue eyes.

Can your friend obtain recordings for us?' Haley enquired.

Most likely not. He was fortunate that they didn't see him when he was there in the first place. In the end, he still supports the Republican party.

Therefore, why did he initially inform you?'

He was inebriated, and he likes me. He occasionally calls me to ask me to try it on.

Then you can entice him to give us more, I take it?'

He would think something wasn't right. He's aware that he's not my type.

Oh, come on, don't you think you could put on
