    INTRODUCTION

Live on Purpose, Change the World

Has your life been nudging you?

If this book called out to you, you’re likely ready for a profound change so that you can experience your life differently. You may even be at a turning point, standing at a crossroads where you can choose to become your most fabulous self, rather than continuing on the same old predictable path.

What would it look like to choose something different? How would it feel? What else is possible? The stories, wisdom, teachings, and techniques offered to you in this book are designed to answer these questions, and help you to awaken your gifts and ignite the courage to live your destined life.

I found myself at a crossroads at the age of 32. After 10 years into a career in cytology, where I spent hours every day looking for cancer cells under a microscope, I was suffering from debilitating chronic pain. I had never wanted to enter that field in the first place. I was the child of an immigrant family that had fled from Italy to Chile, and then onto Australia. Throughout my whole life, I’d felt the pressure of the underlying expectation that I was to succeed where they had been unable to do so in their various homelands. The pressure came to a head when, at 16, I had to choose a course of study. I already knew my passions, but none of them were taught at school. I had already experienced an unexpected and spontaneous moment of deep soul grief a matter of weeks before having to make this decision, when I’d found myself wondering, Why am I here? The emotional trauma I felt in my body had led me to explore different interests, and I’d found meditation, astrology, natural medicine, and lots of books written by female empowerment authors. When I met a young woman who was studying naturopathy, my eyes lit up. Yes! That’s what I want to do!

No, my dad said. I can’t afford it.

He also didn’t believe in natural medicine. I had to weigh up my other options, and ultimately chose a degree in biomedical science, where I majored in cellular pathology and microbiology.

After I graduated, my new job was in the lab looking for infections and cancer in cervical pap smears and fine needle biopsies of organ tissue. But 10 long years later, my body began to scream out. You have to change this! You have to leave. I didn’t listen, and eventually acquired a repetitive strain injury (RSI) from the long hours in the same position. I experienced an agonising year of pain that required many forms of treatment, including massage, acupuncture, and pain-management counselling. I even had to use the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine for chronic pain relief. It sent tiny electrical impulses to my nerves to scramble the pain receptors. Realising that my RSI would never get better while I remained in that field of work, I finally acknowledged I had to change direction and create a new career path.

My lightbulb moment came when I remembered naturopathy. After all those years of work and academia, I realised that it was still what I wanted to do.

When I returned to my studies at age 32, I was passionate about all the new information I was learning. I was also engaged to be married. I gave birth to my first son during that period, and continued to study part time. I qualified as a naturopath at 37, just as my second son arrived. Working from home was the most straightforward option, as I began to build up my practice. It started slowly, but grew over time.

Meanwhile, my elder son had developed many allergies – to foods, to chemicals, to aerosols, to animals, and to fabrics. He cried all the time and hardly slept. His body was covered in weeping eczema that bled, and he was always irritable. It was intense for both of us. Using the knowledge that I was continuing to gain through my ongoing learning and enquiry, I tried many different things to help him heal, including immersing myself in extensive further studies into numerous healing modalities. I combined my medical expertise with energy medicine tools and systematically worked on clearing his body systems.

Every technique and process I tried with my son opened up and deepened my psychic and intuitive healing abilities. When clients started coming to me, through word of mouth, for naturopathic consultations, they also requested healing. I was able to apply the systems and techniques I had practised on my son. Realising that everything is connected, I could no longer just heal a person’s physical problems; I had to uncover the underlying emotional and spiritual components.

Soon, I realised that most of the clients that came to see me were super-sensitive like me. They were intuitive, and suffered from anxiety, stress-related conditions, and allergies. As I supported them through changes in their physical needs, their deeper emotional wounds from childhood would arise. I would help them to uncover their core patterns, and understand why they were carrying the issues they’d inherited from their ancestral line. All of this resulted in much better outcomes for them. They began to release their emotional traumas, and I could discern where they also had intuitive and healing abilities. So many of them were empaths. Their sensitivity was part of their healing journey, and I was able to help them to discover and tap into all of their spiritual gifts.

Our perceived weaknesses are our greatest strengths. Our life path is to overcome our challenges, which helps us to birth into our true purpose.

Being an empath is a gift that has no manual. This is my manual for you.

    Our Dual Inheritance

Let’s start by talking about our intuitive abilities. When we go back far enough, our ancestors were all shamans. They had an immediate connection with nature, animals, the stars, the oceans, and the seasons. They interpreted the signs from nature, and used rituals to act as bridges between the spirit and the physical world. Your inheritance includes the medicine that’s needed now to shift the environment and the earth back into balance. You carry it within you. It is essential that you learn to activate this precious power, as you are needed as an awakened earth healer.

However, along with the inheritance that is the medicine of our gifts, we’ve also inherited trauma. Scientific studies have shown that genetic memory is passed down for fourteen generations.¹ If one of your ancestors experienced excessive stress, that energetic imprint would have been added to your chromosomes.

Genetic memory explains phobias, addictions, and fears, as well as extraordinary abilities and talents. The techniques used in this book will help to rewire your nervous system and transform the negative emotions you have inherited from your grandparents and other ancestors. As you heal, you will awaken your shamanic abilities by tapping into the earth’s healing meridian points – the ley lines.

I know how hard it can be if you don’t have a guide, mentor, or teacher that sees you for who you really are, and helps you exactly where you are at on your journey. As a multi-dimensional alchemist, my mission is to guide conscious, heart-centred women and sensitive men, who are struggling with uncertainty, doubt, and lack of trust, to awaken their sacred power and live to their highest potential. When they do this, they create profound transformation both within and around them. My sacred alchemy processes blend science and intuition. Through this unique blend, this book will help you to find your inner compass. Your inner compass helps you to transcend challenges, and progress to your next level of passion, purpose, and prosperity.

I will help you to navigate your path as you walk through the different initiations on your journey. As you face your challenges and struggles, you’ll no longer contort yourself into smaller versions of you. You’ll no longer allow shrinking, staying silent, or feeling inadequate to have a place in your life. These fears have created separation from the true you and your gifts. With each breakthrough you will heal the past, experience vitality, joy, and freedom, access more of your potential, and begin to fulfil your abundant soul purpose and destiny.

When you change, your world changes. Your awareness, intuition, and sacred gifts are uplifted to a whole new level of wisdom, and new heights of discernment for knowing what’s right for you, and what is no longer working, becomes your guide.

By using the ancient wisdom keys in this book, you will discover how to use your awareness and your intuition confidently, and discern which choices will support you completely. You will release long-standing limiting beliefs that you have inherited, and that have contributed to your illness, condition, or emotional impediment. You’ll learn how to harness and ground your spirituality, which will dissolve anxiety and depression and improve your health and vitality. These shifts will then begin to ripple out into the rest of your life, restoring your balanced mind. You will understand how to use your higher value gifts and purpose by staying congruent with your soul blueprint. Relationships will be vibrant, trusting, respectful, and deeply fulfilling, and you’ll tap into your innate resilience to move out of sadness, frustration, or times when you want to give up. You will move quickly through stress and overwhelm as you create boundaries that support you and help you to create a solid foundation and higher-level choices.

Each chapter in this book will allow you to reflect on your past. Wherever you are on your journey, the prompts, questions, and exercises will help you to dive deep into the blockages that are holding you back, and thus activate profound breakthroughs and transformation.

I began my journey without a teacher. You don’t have to. I am here to guide you so that you can gain the skills, the tools, and the knowledge to shift from overwhelm and insecurity into empowerment and trusting your insights and decisions.

    Awakening the Shaman Within Me

I travelled to South America in 2007. This was a pivotal trip to retrieve a lost piece of me. Reconnecting to my culture was essential to understanding my roots. In my early twenties, I had travelled through Italy, and I could see where that part of my culture had influenced me. The longing to return to Chile had always pulled at my heart, so I left my two boys and my husband for a month to reconnect with my family, my roots, and my cultural ancestry.

My family had left Chile in 1971. There was political unrest, and people had started to flee. It wasn’t safe to express any opinion, food had become scarce, and metal bars were placed over windows. My parents were educated and lived comfortably in a middle-class suburb, but they chose to leave everything behind for a peaceful life in Australia. By the age of 5, I had blocked out many of my earlier memories, but the repeated messages I grew up with were that ‘the world isn’t safe’ and ‘don’t trust anyone’. Returning to Chile was significant for releasing these core fears. In addition, the trip was to activate my spiritual gifts in a new way, and open up my shamanic abilities.

As the Qantas plane approached Santiago airport in June 2007, I stared at the imposing snow-covered Andes mountains. Their impact on my family left a trauma that has never been healed. My Uncle Silvio died in those peaks before I was born. He had a powerful presence on the wall in our family home. The events of the past formed the lives of my parents and then shaped mine. As a child, questions were brushed aside and left unanswered. As an adult, I wanted to understand, to find myself and where I fitted in. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach, and adrenaline coursed through my body. Travelling alone would be a challenge. Yet, I was committed to discovering more of myself, and I knew that experiencing time in Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina was critical to the task of integrating my disconnected parts.

Alfredo, my cousin, and his wife, Victoria, had come to meet me at the airport. They knew me straight away. Ah, Mariangela! they shouted, walking towards me, arms in the air. I was overwhelmed as we joyfully embraced. The last time I saw my cousin Alfredo I was 5 years old. His mannerisms strongly resembled my father’s, and he inherited his blue eyes and physique from the Genoese side of the family. As we stepped outside the airport, the cool wintery air hit my face, just like Tasmania’s low temperatures at this time of the year. It was Father’s Day, and they wanted to celebrate my return. A feast lay ahead of me that day.

Even though I was born in Chile, I felt a deep knowing that I was to go to Peru and visit Machu Picchu. I’d planned to spend a few days with my cousins in Santiago, Chile, then fly to Peru, travel through Bolivia and Argentina, and return to Chile for another week. A few days after my arrival, Alfredo drove me to the airport at 3 am and waved me goodbye as I boarded the plane to Peru.

Looking out the plane window I could see how the Inca trails connected the land to the people. The angular walking paths were etched into the rugged mountainous terrain. I am finally here, I thought, as I disembarked the plane in Lima. I felt my joy-filled heart expand as my feet touched the thick brown Peruvian soil. My breathing was laboured, my head pounding, and I felt spacey at 3,000 metres above sea level. Was this the altitude sickness they warned me about?

Trying to ignore these uncomfortable physical sensations, I was surprised that I could see so many animal spirits in the vast barren mountains surrounding the airport. My visions were already heightened in this tangibly alive landscape. Having retrieved my convertible backpack from the baggage carousel, I was greeted by five striking red-woven-poncho-wearing Peruvian musicians energetically playing their traditional music. I was delighted to see this colourful group. It sparked much heartfelt laughter in me, as the pan pipes and flutes brought me so much joy. I could hardly believe I was here, in Peru, after so many years of waiting. The melody triggered a pain deep in my chest, and tears welled up wanting to be released. I pushed the feelings back down. Not here, not yet.

I was up the following chilly morning, ready to catch the 6 am train to Aguas Calientes—‘hot springs’—the closest village to Machu Picchu. The five-carriage train squealed as it braked, shuffled, jerked and zig-zagged back and forward as it climbed the steep mountain. The scenery was beautiful: high, jagged, snow-capped peaks shone, and a fast-flowing river sparkled as we wound deeper into the forest.

I was thrilled that my psychic perception had already been upgraded due to the magical energy of the land, and I was aware of the many animal spirits living in the rocks and amongst the trees. The Peruvians have a strong connection with animals, animals that offer them transformational qualities through various rituals and ceremonies. As I walked off the train, I couldn’t contain my excitement. My wide eyes soaked up every detail of every market stall. They were bursting with woven carpets, embroidered shawls, textured runners, vibrant water-colour paintings, multi-sized pan pipes, and bucket loads of colourful crystals. I could sense something extraordinary about this town as my heart, my cells, my whole being filled with joy. There was simplicity and peace here. Perhaps the hot springs in the lush rainforest valley offered a calming sense of cleansing and purification.

As I explored the shops in the area, I met Monica, who was selling postcards and trinkets in a little bookshop. Behind her counter, I saw what looked like an altar on the rough earthen floor. Spread on a coloured shawl were a black and white eagle wing, eight llama toe bones on a string, brown feathers, coca leaves, clear quartz crystals, small round grey stones, and a conch shell. It felt powerful. Intrigued, I asked her about it in Spanish. She told me it was her husband’s altar. He was a shaman and was away at the moment.

What can you feel? she asked cautiously.

Well, it’s like a whirlwind … but it doesn’t feel right, I said, before pausing.

    Monica waited for more.

Do you do this sort of thing? she asked nervously, walking around to my side of the counter.

I work with angels, and I can’t feel them around this altar. I don’t know where they are. It feels dark, I said nervously. Did she know that this collection of amulets was not being used for healing but to take from others?

She came closer and whispered, I’m frightened of him.

I was shocked that some healers used their gifts for the wrong reasons. I stared at the collection, trying to understand what he was doing.

"Can you help me? He uses his powers for
