Prologue
Amanda paced the floor anxiously as she checks the time on her watch. Bill is fifteen minutes late, she murmurs, it’s not like him, and he’s always on time. She was waiting for him in their usual meeting place behind the stable. Footsteps could be heard approaching but Amanda was cautious as not to alert the wrong person of her presence in the stable at that hour of the night. Leaning against the wall Amanda’s heart beats faster as the footsteps get closer and closer.
Let it be Bill, dear God please let it be Bill,
she whispers as sweat beaded her forehead and her palms.
The spot she was waiting was poorly lit by the light of the moon. Standing just a few feet from her was a man dressed in full black clothing and riding boots. Amanda knows Bill exceptionally well but tonight she was uncertain of the man standing a few meters away from her. She was about to sneak away when he spoke her name.
Amanda
he calls softly. Are you here?
Relieve, Amanda stepped from her hiding place and rushed towards the love of her life. Showering Bill’s face with kisses she asks him what took him so long.
I was afraid you wouldn’t show up as you were fifteen minutes late.
Forgive me my love
Father insist that I joined him and mother to discuss my future as always.
"Will you really be disinherited if you fail to produce an Heir? Amanda ask as she released Bill and turned away. Grabbing her by the arm Bill swung her around.
Should Cassandra failed in providing me an Heir, then I have no choice but to produce one with you.
You and I both know that’s not possible Bill; as your parent’s would not accept me as the mother of your child.
You’re the one that I love Amanda
and the only woman I’ll ever love. Always remember that.
She was about to speak when Bill silenced her with a kiss. With ragged breath and roaming hands Bill caress Amanda’s breast pushing her rigidly into the wall. The light of the moon dance upon her face.
You’re so beautiful Amanda
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to take you as my wife, but we both know it cannot be as we are forbidden to see each other. I can hardly image what would happen to you if we should get caught with each other like this.
Don’t imagine my love
No one knows that we are here, so lets just closed the world and everybody else out and leave just the two of us.
Chapter One
Bill poured himself a cup of coffee and reached for a croissant as he listens to his father Hubert Dafoue discussed Cassandra Higgins and her family with his mother Jean. It’s been seven months since Cassandra was introduced to Bill by His parent’s who both agreed that Cassandra would make a wonderful wife as well as a great daughter-in-law, and so they have spoken to Cassandra’s parent’s Mr. and Mrs. Higgins asking for her hand in marriage to their son.
Bill fined it difficult to court Cassandra as he doesn’t love her. He’s madly in love with Amanda the daughter of their housekeeper. If his parent’s learn of this not only will they fire Amanda’s mother Chivielle but they will disinheritance him from the family inheritance. At the moment Bill cannot afford to be disinherited and so he has decided to go along with the choice his parent’s has made for him. In order for Bill to inherit his family Estate he needs an Heir.
‘Why can’t I choose a bride of my liking? he asked his father. Some one I love or at least have the ability to love.
Family comes first Bill
Replied his mother. Love can come later.
But I don’t love Cassandra
Bill said sadly.
You listen to me boy
said his father angrily don’t you disrespect your mother by telling her such nonsense. You will marry Cassandra whether you love her or not.
Do you understand?
Yes father
I understand.
Good!
Now take the time to get to know Cassandra and the both of you agreed upon a date for your engagement.
Patting Bill on the shoulder his father walked out the room leaving him and his mother at the table.
Amanda
her mom Chivielle called.
Yes mama.
Please come and take the laundry and hang on the line outside.
Coming mama.
Picking up the laundry basket Amanda walk down the long hall way and exit through the side door close to the kitchen that leads to the back yard. She hums as she placed the clothes on the line. Bill’s room is located to the east of the house and so he’s got a magnificent view of the backyard over looking the garden all the way to the neighbour’s front lawn two houses away.
Rehearsing in his mind what his parent’s has said. (Family comes first; love can come later Bill) restlessly he walked to his window to clear his mind by enjoying the view of the garden below. His heart was lightened when he saw Amanda hanging clothes on the line. He whistles. The wind carries the sweet sound to Amanda’s ears.
Looking up she saw him hanging from the window. She gave Bill a warm smile as she waves. Bill told her he’s coming down by making signs with his hand. Understanding what he has said Amanda nods.
Who are you talking to child?
Turning around Amanda saw her mother standing a few meters away.
No one.
I don’t believe you Amanda.
Now who were you talking to?
Looking in the direction of Bill’s window she realized that he was no longer there. I was just imagining and talking to myself mama.
Hm hm
I know who you were imagining about, but don’t get your hopes up Amanda it will never happen; you hear me, it will never happen. Now hurry and hang the laundry then come and help me in the kitchen.
Yes mama.
Bill bumped into Chivielle as he opens the door.
Good morning Mrs. Chivielle.
Good morning Bill.
Where’s that lovely daughter of yours?
he asked.
Amanda.
I don’t see you with any other daughter around here?
he teased. Bill already knows where Amanda was.
She’s hanging the clothes at the back
she told him.
Thanking her Bill walked briskly to the back of the house. Sneaking up behind Amanda he blows on the back of her neck and startled her. Laughing softly Amanda quickly turns around reached for him forgetting for a moment where they were. Taking a quick glance around and seeing no one Bill drew Amanda into his arms and kiss her on the cheek Mr. Dafoue return from his morning ride carrying two ducks in his hand.
Dismounting from Daffodil his stallion he calls Greg a young stable lad and hand the reigns of his horse to him instructing him to check the horses shoe and give him a complete grooming. A group of gardeners were attending the gardens as well as the lawn. The Dafoue’s household will be very busy for the next three days as preparation was being made for Cassandra and Bill’s engagement party. This is a very special moment for Mr. and Mrs. Higgins and their daughter Cassandra.
A large tent was set up for this grand occasion. Today Chivielle the house keeper and her daughter Amanda worked harder than usual as there were so much chores to take care of. Stanley the butler gave Kenrod his assistant chef a brief rundown of the menu and asked that he go into town and buy fresh meat and vegetables.
There will be ninety-five guests in attendance for this grand celebration. Bill’s heart felt as thou a million tiny needles were piercing it inside as he thinks of the one woman he loves but cannot have. Amanda.
Because she is the housekeeper’s daughter she’s consider lower class to that of Bills’ status to Bill
Amanda’s status is of no importance to him as he sees her only as the love of his life. She’s the only person that understands him as well as the only one he felt confident and comfortable talking to about everything that goes on in his life. Though she is five years younger than he.
To Bill Amanda is a lot more mature at the age of eighteen than many of the young Ladies he dated while in University not to mention the women that were born and bred to be proper ladies. He fined them somewhat skittish as well as too prim and proper.
With him being the adventurer he is Bill loves Amanda free spirited nature and the way she’s not afraid to laugh from the heart whenever she finds something to be very funny. Only now his heart is aching terrible as within the next four hours he will be announcing his engagement to Cassandra Higgins. This will be heartbreaking for Amanda.
Amanda and her mother work side by side setting up the tables while Greg and two other workers placed the chairs at the table.
"I
