About this ebook
Separated into four distinct sections, On Gentle Wings will guide you through perceptive and reflective representations of birds 'In The Home', 'In The Air', 'In The Heart' and 'In The Absurd'. Each poem is woven around themes ranging from the love between couples and families to finding independence and discovering identity.
On Gentle Wings is Oskar Leonard's fifth poetry collection, and his first to exclusively feature birds as the inspiration for his verses. These themes of the natural world blended with the human experience can be found across many of his poetic works.

On Gentle Wings - Oskar Leonard
For magpies, pigeons, crows, seagulls, blackbirds, ducks, woodpeckers, doves, chickens, ravens, phoenixes and all others who inspired these poems, as well as their admirers.
Introduction
Welcome! If you're reading this, then hopefully you're ready for some bird-inspired poetry... quite a lot of it, in fact! This collection contains over one hundred poems which are all about birds. I really wanted to create a collection inspired by our feathered friends in the sky, and it has finally come to fruition in On Gentle Wings.
As you may have noticed, this collection is separated into four distinct parts, each illustrated by a beautiful image created by my friend JaceEarts. Section I is In The Home, focusing on pet birds, birds around the house and other such ideas. Section II, In The Air, is the opposite to that, as it's all about birds in their natural habitats and flying around. Section III is In The Heart which focuses on the more emotional side of birds and their relationships, both with us and with each other. Finally, Section IV is In The Absurd, where all the avian chaos is!
I really hope you enjoy reading these poems. I wrote every single one by hand before collecting them up into this book, and they filled many notebooks. It's wonderful to see them finally laid out like this and ready to be appreciated. After so much work went into drafting, revising, editing and sectioning the poems, I just hope it was all worth it for you to be able to read them like this today!
Section I – In The Home
Pet
Hold me so close to your chest
that you know no other heartbeat,
not even your own.
You take me in as chick,
you strange, two-legged,
no-winged thing.
Will you love me still
when my feathers are grey?
A Song Bird’s Letter
Dear man, I will always
remain on your shoulder.
I see your rat and raise you
two wings and a voice.
Together, we will act companion,
even as others leave you.
We see not the reasons
why they disappear,
but we have our own
for staying.
Kindest regards,
your sweetest song bird.
Caged Ghost
He’s behind you,
behind bars,
waiting for seed—
for food.
His heart beats still,
you lazy, stupid
owner.
He is not a ghost—yet.
Bird In The Hand
Sit here, my friend—
rest yourself on my fingers,
so much wider than your delicate talons,
and become truly
comfortable.
