Her One True Love - Heather Scarlett
Chapter One
Foster Dupont was in hell. Otherwise known as Harmony, California, his hometown. He looked around his family’s winery, which would soon be filled with tourists here for the town’s famous Winter Solstice Festival. Every December, the town went all out to celebrate the darkest day of the year. The entire town was lit up with white twinkle lights and vendors gathered to sell food and craft items.
The early morning air was crisp and Foster could see his breath in the dim light. He was grateful for his foresight to stop for coffee as the warmth of the cups helped take the chill away from his hands.
Usually, he’d be in New York City, in his corner office overlooking the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. He’d be busy with the many responsibilities of being a corporate accountant at the end of the fiscal year. As a result, he never came home for Christmas. Until this year. His parents died in a car accident exactly two months ago today, pulling Foster and his six siblings together for an unplanned and unwelcome reunion.
A lump settled in his throat. Just a few months ago, he took family for granted. Now he realized his whole life had been carefully curated to avoid any emotional entanglement. He’d always been better with numbers—they made much more sense than feelings that had no right or wrong answer. Since his first girlfriend in high school dumped him because he wasn’t able to express his feelings to her, he’d found it easier not to get attached. His most recent girlfriend had seemed his perfect fit, but the relationship had ended much the same way.
Foster’s work had been an enormous distraction from feelings. But life had just taken his well-laid plans and thrown them into the air with wild abandon.
The family winery, Chateau Felicity—named after his oldest sister—would not run itself. So he took a leave of absence to support his siblings as they developed a plan for the winery. His role was to manage the accounts for the business, which was thankfully in good condition, so Foster found himself unexpectedly free for the holidays for the first time in his twenty-eight years.
Not one to sit idle, he complained to his longtime best friend, Zach, about his boredom. The result had been Zach calling in a favor and asking Foster to help Zach’s little sister with her Winter Solstice Festival vendor tent.
Which is how Foster found himself at the outer edge of the family winery, where the festival was being held, freezing in front of a white tent, waiting for Zoe Huxley to arrive. He hadn’t seen her in a decade and his last memory of her was as a sixteen-year-old for whom he’d had very inconvenient romantic feelings. At eighteen and college-bound, he was too old for her. Now the age difference wouldn’t matter.
Their lives had taken drastically different paths. She owned a New Age store in downtown Harmony and he was a corporate executive. He couldn’t imagine anyone more opposite of him than a tarot-reading mystic. Yet he’d be trapped in a tent with her for hours. This was going to be a long day.
Zoe sat in her parked car, clutching the steering wheel and cursing her brother. She would gladly throw a handful of black kyanite crystals at
