    Ithica, the Mind-Reading Saint

    2016

Ithica stood behind her desk, holding back a smile at the soon-to-be employee who gazed at her with hopeful eyes. She had seen this look many times before. After the interview, they always had this expression of wonder about how she managed to guess everything right about them. Of course, she would never reveal her secret, but she did humor the idea that she had a superpower.

The truth was, she did. One that she used to help others. When Ithica was fifteen years old, she discovered she could control the rate at which she perceived things. Activating her ability took concentration, similar to calming your mind before starting an activity. Once calm, she could tap into a pool of energy in her mind. It almost felt like a new muscle would appear in her mind’s eye that she could control. By perceiving something not to move, it did not or seemed not to be moving. Or she could accelerate her perception, making things move faster than they were going. With training, she slowed the perception of her body’s aging, how strong she thought she was, or how weak an object was. By altering her perception of things, she altered how they appeared in reality.

The first incident was when she was on a date with her boyfriend and noticed all the leaves and birds had stopped moving. They were inside a treehouse in her backyard. The leaves suspended mid-fall, and the birds froze mid-flight as if someone had taken a picture of nature. At the time, she wanted the moment to last forever.

Ithica only thought to give him a gentle kiss. When he didn’t pull away, hesitantly, she continued to press into the kiss. But she soon realized he was not putting any effort into it. When Ithica pulled away, irritated, and prepared to voice her complaint to him, she noticed he was frozen. She glanced out the treehouse window and saw her mother stop mid-stride as she left the house to get groceries. A finch was suspended in the air as if she were looking at a painting. Forever frozen in time, unable to go anywhere, the world around her looked like a still photo. She realized what was happening and knew the power she possessed. In the beginning, Ithica thought she could stop time, but with practice, she realized it was her perception of the world that she was altering.  Her world changed immediately after that. She now had all the time in the world, and as days passed, she taught herself the many secrets hidden in her ability. She was responsible for her skills, using them selfishly but never harming anyone or putting someone in a dangerous position.

As Ithica got older, she used her abilities to help people in need by slowing her perception of time while she was with them to give them more time. Slowing her perception of time gave the classmate she tutored more time to study when. When last-minute preparations were needed, her slowed perception allowed her friends and family to accomplish the task. If someone needed more time, she could perceptively give it to them.

At thirty-five, Ithica was the CEO of her own company, Hope, which specialized in training people in customer service, training people on how to train people, and a temp employee agency. A company could hire her employees to train their employees in customer service, or they can rent her employees for a short time. Usually, her employees were hired for office work, retail, restaurants, and accounting until the hiring company could find a permanent employee.

The company’s headquarters were in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but her branch was in New York City. It was a Friday afternoon, and Ithica was sitting in her executive chair on the thirtieth floor, gingerly placing the last bite of her bagel in her mouth as she looked at the young intern. She delicately used her napkin to wipe away any crumbs as the girl shifted her weight, still hopeful and amazed under her gaze.

Ma’am, the young lady said, flabbergasted. I’m not sure how you were able to learn so much about me in such a short time, but I must say I’m impressed, and I look forward to working for your company.

Ithica smiled, placing her hands on the desk. After the soon-to-be employee had walked in and sat down, Ithica perceptibly froze time, swiped the girl’s phone from her pocket, and investigated every app, message, and photo the girl had on her device. The girl had a diary app that dated back five years, and she complained about everything. The girl was applying for an administrative assistant position, and this was the final interview. She was a hard worker, but her personal life could be an issue, involving herself with so many men simultaneously.

What can I say? Ithica said. I read you like an open book.

The intern was taken aback by the statement, unsure how to respond. Well, uh, yeah. I guess I will get going. Work starts on Monday morning. She stood, hesitant. She looked at Ithica for a few more moments, then awkwardly walked out of the office.

Ithica sat in her oversized chair, spinning around and thinking about how to help the girl. She had been through so much and needed someone to guide
