Introduction: Symbiosis and its goal in the Universe
As a doctor and scientist, I am fascinated by symbiosis. Far more than simply interesting, this knowledge is applicable as it has the potential to not only deepen our understanding of the world around us, but also inspire us to cultivate more harmonious relationships with it and each other. In this book, we’ll explore symbiosis in its broadest sense, encompassing not just interactions between living beings but also those between seemingly inanimate objects. It is my hope that this encourages readers to appreciate the beautiful complexity and interconnectedness of life, and that by coming to understand these countless interactions we may ultimately embrace a more cooperative and fulfilling way of living.
Symbiosis—a term derived from the Greek words syn
(together) and biosis
(living)—refers to the phenomenon of living together. While traditionally used to describe relationships between different living things, like animals and plants, we are expanding the concept of symbiosis to include relation with everything,
highlighting the importance of interactions and connections throughout the world. This broader definition of symbiosis leads us to a new definition of life - interaction. By viewing life as a continuous process of relating and connecting in this way, we recognize that even the most basic elements of life, such as cells and pre-cellular organisms, evolved through interactions. Thus, a life form can be seen as a dynamic system of interactions that appears to be self-sustaining, able to connect with the rest of the universe and other living beings. In reality, this is an organized way of interaction that counters chaos or entropy, favoring symbiotic relationships and cooperation over disintegration. Although this idea isn't based on a specific scientific law, it represents a beautiful and thought-provoking perspective that encourages us to consider the interconnectedness of the world around us. This concept, which is not rooted in theology, offers up a way to explain the evolution of things through symbiotic relationships. Applying this new definition of life based on interaction broadens our understanding beyond individual organisms to encompass entire ecosystems, planets, and even the universe itself. Just as living organisms result from and are shaped by countless interactions, so too are planets and celestial bodies. This view leads us to consider the universe as an intricate web of interconnected and evolving entities, from the tiniest microorganisms and plants to the largest animals and celestial bodies.
This vast interconnectedness that helps all living things grow and thrive is complex, but what underpins it is simple - the undeniable importance of working together and caring for the world around us. As we embark on this exciting journey through the world of symbiosis, we will uncover how our relationships with everything around us have shaped who we are, how we live, and even how we perceive the universe. Embracing this idea of symbiosis and the inherent interconnectedness of all things lends itself to fostering a deeper sense of empathy and
