    About the Author

The planet of Xantus is home to the Gavozaki, Spirano, and Shogkun Raynen clans. Cyro gems are produced and harvested from the surface and presumed to reach the planet core. Cyro gems output large-scale energy that is harnessed for cruise ships and weapons, for example. Wolf elves occupy the mountain ranges and plateaus. Vultari goblin renegade packs roam through the lower foothills and forest ranges. There are also water Kander Serpants that search the waterways of the north forests and call volcanic mountain ranges their home.

The Gavozaki clan has been enslaved for nearly two hundred years. As only a few elders remember the past ways. A predestined freedom fighter, Trykan, is given as an infant to Arkane's father commander, Toren, during a raid to entrap his parents. He is trained in close-quarter combat as well as war strategy by various Betrayer contracted war generals and bounty hunters. He is brainwashed to believe the Gavozaki clan turned on his parents and killed them off. Oversees specific sectors of the enslaved camps as they build warehouses and experimental chambers for cyro gem use.

The Lord will vindicate me. Your love, Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of your hands.

    —Psalm 138:8

    Riches to Rags

Clouds fill the sky, as rain begins to fall calmly. Inhabitants of a remote cyro gem mine are up and ready to get work started. Mine workers begin their trek to the taxi stations. Officiant machinery awaiting operation. Massive earth movers sieve through the soil and expose the hidden treasures buried beneath the surface. A typical day presents itself. Children are also running about the chaos. A pack of younglings are up early, chasing one another, jumping in puddles, using sticks to imitate the warriors that protect them. The trading posts are setting their goods out. Early smells of breakfast rush the atmosphere. As they run, they compete. Compete to be the first. One of the children stops and settles to catch his breath.

Wait for me! he says. He loses sight of the rest of the pack.

You best catch up! an elder explains. They are quick, but you can do it, don't give up, she adds.

The youngling smiles at her. I will! he answers. He fills his lungs with breath to once again take off. In doing so, something else catches his attention. In the distance high above, a fast-moving object races through the clouds. He rubs his eyes to make sure. He loses his new breath. He points up. No one noticed at first. But another elder spots the young male. He looks up too. The object has grown bigger. A shooting star? A flock of birds? No, this is different. As more and more of the audience look up, a panic sets in. A black cruise ship cuts through the sky of Xantus. Two squad fighter jets break trailing position and escort the menacing vessel.

The light from the nearest sun pierces behind the flying ship. Its roaring engines now fill the valley below. The cruiser settles near the outer walls of the small community. Gavozaki warriors rush out of the main drop gate. Clan leader, Torak Tenc, pushes through the lines and meets the cruiser.

Quickly! Form the lines, he orders. This is not a trade ship. As trade with other civilizations has been suspended. The ship arrives with no appointment, his commander explains. Torak draws his sword. We have a guest? Let them come, he adds.

The battalions form up. They also draw their swords and let out a combined war cry! Aahooh! The ship lands and sits still for a few moments. Suddenly a bay hatch opens, and a large menacing shadow emerges. Torak steps forth and walks ahead to meet the foreigners. A tall being walks down off the ramp and meets Torak.

How can we be of service? You are not scheduled for any type of visit! Torak yells.

The large figure has a flight drone translate the communicated words. The large figure smiles with its large teeth. The drone responds, Service? Visit? No, we have come for something more. Torak immediately realizes his fear. The drone orders, Release the hounds!

Immediately more panels from the cruiser open, and a rush of steam follow into the atmosphere. Little by little, black shadows rush the large invaders' left and right positions. Torak raises his right arm into the air, initiating his troops to attack his command. The black shadows continue to float in the air. Swaying left to right. The large unwanted guest speaks to the drone in a foreign language.

The drone lights red and once again speaks, I am Rexon, and these shadows are your new occupants. The black shadows do not hesitate and advance the Gavozaki clan lines.

    Torak commands, Live free!

The warriors drop to a battle stance. Without warning, a shadow faces Torak. It stares into Torak's eyes and smiles. Torak's eyes are locked in as well. The shadow quickly enters Torak's being through the nostrils and mouth. Torak falls to his knee. His head looks to the sky. Eyes white. All the clans experience the same. Rexon's weight is felt as the ground underneath trembles from the steps. The red terror stands over Torak and smiles once more.

Stand, warrior, and witness your clan become mine. No blood has been shed. No warrior lost. You answer to me now.

Torak struggles as the Swayer takes over his mind and thoughts. The rest of the clan samurai have also been taken over by the black shadows. Rexon puts his massive left hand on Torak's shoulder and asks, Show me your land and let's discuss the future.

This day will be the last free day for some time. Rain continues to fall. Lightning fills the sky.

    *****

I wake from the same dream. Day after day. Faces. Familiar faces. So close. Yet so far away. A laugh. A smile. An interruption. Screams. A hand reaches for me. Then nothing.

For Trykan, this morning will be different. The dream is the same. But the path to his true purpose is about to be revealed.

    *****

Trykan is awakened by a voice in the distance. A Swayer soldier speaks, Wake up, Trykan, you are needed at the mine lab. They have an issue!

Trykan quickly rises and rushes out of his quarters. The great halls and pillars are radiant from the two moons' morning shine. As he looks out into the distance, he senses a feeling that has been reoccurring more frequently of late. This haunting grows larger in his mind and heart. A longing.

The three-horned warrior makes his way down the outer corridor and jumps on the last transport tank to get to the east end of the mine. As he drives down the pit wall, he notices only a few of the haul transports are moving. This infuriates Trykan.

What are they up to now? As he approaches the lab, Texel, the lab tech lead, awaits Trykan.

Braking hard, the transport tank pulls up at the front entrance. Trykan. I warned you months ago! The cyro gems deposits are depleted. The veins in the mountains are coming to an end. The excavation teams are reducing ground production on their own so we don't get punished! Texel explains.

I know. You are correct. Trykan looks over the site map. We must take production to the south quad as samples have shown deposits there. Call the dig team leads and get a mine plan together. Move half of the fleet before the end of the day and position accordingly. Have the more efficient pilots begin the cut. Send the sample report as soon as possible. We have to move fast! Trykan responds. These workers will perish if we don't keep up the numbers, Trykan thinks to himself. Listen, Texel, take the stockpiles down by 15 percent, and store the gems separate to make up for the decrease later!

    Thank you, Trykan! Texel cries.

The fear in Texel's eyes says it all. The Gavozaki clan is holding on by a thread. Trykan knows the punishment for a decrease in production. The slaves are spent. Between a rock and hard place, to say the least. Trykan walks out of the lab and toward the overseer pad. He grabs the safety railing, looking across and down on the massive pit. He knows that nothing good is ahead.

Swayer soldiers approach again from the dusty path and interrupt his thought. Trykan, you are summoned to the meeting hall at once to keep the meeting secure, they order. The annual meeting is about to take place!

Wait, how is that today? They are scheduled to arrive next super cycle! Trykan says.

The Swayer soldiers don't care. Rexon and his puppets are arriving to check on the order of things. "Great, this day gets
