    The woods. Jax was out there with the two dogs. Late. In the dark. Stupid is what it was, what anybody would say. What Granddad would say back at the trailer.

    If there still was a granddad.

    He was a memory but his voice was just as strong now as it ever had been. Jax could still have a conversation with the old man whenever he wanted to. Almost kept Jax from feeling alone, being able to conjure up his opinions on just about anything. And he had a lot of opinions about this night. Those dogs.

    But they had wanted to be let out of the pen and when they wanted it, they wouldn’t settle.

    Nothing worse than the sound of a dog’s hollow bark when they want something. One that goes on and on. Jax had gone out there just to shut them up. They barked like they’d seen something. And he’d’ve laid there in the dark all night long wondering and listening. Unless he just got up and took them where they wanted to go.

    Easier that way.
