REN ALDRIDGE is a vocalist, artist and writer. She is the front woman of feminist post-hardcore band Petrol Girls whose latest album Cut & Stitch was released May 2019 on Hassle Records. She is a regular writer for Ladyfuzz zine and her essay Touch Me Again And I Will Fucking Kill You: Cultural Resistance to Gendered Violence in the Punk Rock Community was published in 404Ink’s award-winning anthology Nasty Women. Her art practice deals with language, bodies and overthrowing capitalism.

Nation Fucking
illustrationThe record title, Cut & Stitch, came from a project that I’ve been working on for a while now. The lyrics to the left—the last to be written for this record—explain the basics of Nation Fucking.
It began when I was living in Hamburg during the 2014 World Cup. German flags fluttered from cars and windows, and red, black and yellow memorabilia littered the Reeperbahn, reeking of piss and beer. Many of my German friends were disturbed by this eruption of national symbolism, and pride. The extremes of nationalism in Germany’s recent history were present in their minds. Anarchist friends taught me to cut off the yellow section from flags on parked cars, leaving a rough version of the anarcho-syndicalist flag. They told me about a squat in Leipzig with a whole room full of stolen yellow sections of flag. The idea of it stuck with
