    Harry Price has worked for years as a railway signalman in the Welsh border village of Glynmawr. Now he has had a stroke, and his son, Matthew, a lecturer at Oxford, returns to the close-knit community that he left.

    An academic, and the writer of both non-fiction and fiction, Raymond Williams (1921–88) was one of the most important and influential British thinkers of the twentieth century. Williams wrote about politics, culture, mass media and literature, and his work was key to the development of cultural studies. His best-known books include ‘Culture and Society’, ‘The Long Revolution’ and ‘The Country and the City’.

      This was a reading group book. I enjoyed it more than expected and got quite emotionally involved with the characters. The story of a father and son in the border country of Wales and their relationship over the years. The father knows his own mind but never communicates while the son is torn between his academic London life and his home life as a Welsh working class son. Worth a read.
