Enter the Blood Seed
It was three in the morning and raining like hell during a wild chase on Norfolk's dark, narrow streets. The sounds of Dink, dink… dink, dink, dink
as bullets pierced Thanh's truck worsened the cramping in his stomach. He wanted to throw up as the passenger in the black Ferrari shooting at him appeared to be getting closer with every turn. Thanh would either lose control (and crash on the slippery street) or die in a hail of gunfire from the black Ferrari racing behind him. I can't see shit!
Thanh said, driving like a madman to escape the sounds of screeching tires and gunfire as the Ferrari closed the gap.
Thanh Nguyen was an easygoing, live-and-let-live individual who had always searched for his roots, longing to connect to his Vietnamese heritage. After inheriting his grandfather's antique shop and losing his adopted mother to breast cancer, Thanh became a priceless antique dealer and owner of a reputable import company on the east coast. He wasn't about that life, a life of crime perpetuated by Vinh who is currently chasing behind him. He had no idea delivering antique dragons would unearth a dark family legacy that would turn his life upside down.
Thanh dipped into an alley. I can't shake these fools,
swerving side to side as the thugs kept firing. Truck, don't fail me now,
he said, hoping no one walked out in front of them as both vehicles approached the street at the end of the alley. The SUV went into a skid as he made a sharp right turn. Thanh quickly regained control of his truck and pushed his pedal to the floor as he raced toward a bridge about 200 feet ahead of him. I ain't dying today,
he said, after seeing in his mirror that the Ferrari didn't make the turn.
The neighborhood Than and Vinh raced through began peeking out their windows as the commotion of screening tires, gunshots, and bullet ricochets abruptly awakened them. Still, Thanh kept scanning the street ahead to ensure he did not run over anyone who got in his way. To survive, Thanh had to reach his fortified warehouse before Vinh and his associates caught up with him.
Thanh knew Vinh would come for him after killing his mom, aunt, and cousin, but he had all he needed to fulfill his family's legacy by selling his priceless golden dragons.
Legacy of the Tran
The Tran Organization, a powerful Vietnamese crime syndicate, had controlled the underworld of Norfolk, Virginia, for decades. And, unbeknownst to Thanh, his grandfather had been the organization's ruthless leader. Oblivious to the import industry's dark side and his lineage's infamous reputation, Thanh found himself trapped in a web of secrets and lies. Life was a far cry from the stories of humble beginnings endured by his mother during the Vietnam War. Thanh soon discovered he didn't like the part of his life that chose him to be involved in a criminal organization.
An uneventful day in the office changed drastically when a call to deliver a pair of antique dragons to a mysterious buyer in Norfolk, Virginia, unknowingly made him a target. The dragons were keys to a weapon of mass destruction that the Tran Organization had been developing for years. And their bitter rival, the Chen family, was hot on his heels, determined to steal the dragons at any cost.
Thanh never refused a requisition; however, the challenges of fulfilling this invoice would disclose his birthright to a legacy of organized crime that threatened to destroy everything he held dear. The mysterious caller withheld further instruction until he retrieved the dragons in Vietnam; rubbing his chin and staring at the floor after hanging up, Thanh knew that he was about to face his greatest challenge yet - a fight for survival in a world of violence, power, and betrayal made Thanh an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Primed and Predestined
Just across town, frigid mid-winter crosswinds of Norfolk, Virginia, shook Vinh's corner window as he sat at his desk staring at the halt of the early morning rush hour traffic. The soundproof window shielded him from the blaring horns and obscenities below when he stood and walked toward the window to get a better look at the sun peeking from behind the international trade building. Vinh's operations manager left a sticky note that read, Sir, you had an unusual call this morning. The caller didn't want to leave a message.
Hmm… I hope he calls back soon
, said Vinh as he shuffled through a folder filled with invoices for the day's transactions. The sudden laughter of a young woman's voice outside Thanh's office broke his concentration. As he exited the office, he thought, "DAMN!’ immediately. His thoughts strayed to his player days at NSU while he watched the intern's big ass bend over a desk in front of Thanh’s office door.
Vinh Buu was an opportunistic businessman with a reputation for shady tendencies. The Vietnamese community did business with him as a last resort, but his clientele called him whenever imports could only be obtained on the black market. Vinh never crossed Thanh while doing business nor competed with him at any level, but he knew of his reputation. A missed call would distract him from the wood he obtained from staring at that big ass and send him on a collision course with Thanh. Vinh was a thug and wanted all the smoke, but this dawg was about to fuck around and find out.
Vinh's head snapped back toward his desk when the phone rang. I have to get this, but I will get back to you later,
he said to the intern while stepping back into his office.
Hello?
Mr. Buu?
Yes,
My name is Yu Nguyen, and I have a message for you from Madame Ha Trang.
That name sounds familiar, but would you happen to be related to Thanh Nguyen?
Ha, ha…you got jokes, Mr. Buu, but who knows, we might be.
Vinh smiled and rubbed the back of his neck, Well, how may I help you, Mr. Nguyen?
You can call me Yu, my friend… If you look in that black folder on your desk, you will find an invoice for two golden dragons.
What? Hold on…
Vinh shuffled through the invoices again until the light from his office reflected off a metallic watermark on an invoice that caught his attention. It was the invoice he was looking for, but this was the first time he had printed it on this paper.
Hello? Still there?
Yes, Sir.
I found the invoice.
Good…please have a seat, Mr. Buu. I am sure you have never seen this kind of paper in the U.S., nor will you see another set of antiques like these.
"Oh, really?'
Yes. Please let me explain the details; I know they are unique to you.
The Pitch
Vinh's palms began to sweat as he sat silently, staring at the invoice with the phone in his hand. Two seconds seemed like an eternity, but Vinh quickly placed the phone into its receiver and switched to his earpiece before Yu started talking. His hands shook as he rubbed them on his pants. ‘Why the hell am I so nervous?’ he whispered.
Mr. Buu.
Yes?
Please keep this in mind. I have some codes I need you to remember.
"Codes?', Vinh thought…This was some new shit, but Yu's voice commanded his attention. Vinh pulled up the notepad on his mobile phone, set it down and rubbed his hands on his pants again.
Okay, what you got?
Delta, two, nine, three, five, seven, alpha... To get in, punch this code into the warehouse door panel and walk down the hall to an open bay.
Okay…
Thanh will be sitting in a golf cart waiting for you.
Vinh kept scanning the invoice as Yu gave him instructions and paused momentarily. Playing stupid, What does this Thanh look like, and where is this warehouse located?
Coming of Age
Yu Nguyen took another couple of seconds to answer Vinh's questions. He had always thought quickly on his feet, but this was a challenge. He declined to discuss logistics with Vinh's manager because he had to motivate Vinh to return to Vietnam without exposing Thanh and his family's identity. Yu had to arouse Vinh's interest in the dragons, so he would want to avoid handing them to Thanh freely. The plan was for Vinh and Thanh to meet in the same place, but it took a little Yu's effort to motivate Vinh.
Thirty years earlier, Yu and Vinh, his best friend, were crouched in the rice fields of southeast Asia, watching a raging firefight erupt between local warlords. As they looked for an escape route back to the village, they discovered another group of men in the distant poppy moving toward the conflict. There was no escape route, and he had to choose between being seen by the warlords or these peculiar men in green uniforms.
They didn't look like Vietnamese soldiers, but he knew they didn't work for either warlord. Yu turned and looked at Vinh after the strange men set the field ablaze.
Mom is gonna be mad that they destroyed the poppy fields, but those men are not our enemies.
I wonder who they are?
We will find out soon.
The men accosted the fighting warlords and opened fire. Yu watched as shrapnel and bullets shredded falling bodies. This stuff stinks,
covering his nose to block the smell of the black smoke and stench of burning flesh and blood. Minutes later, a jeep stopped in the middle of the field. Noticing a star and flag on the side, Thanh's friend yelled, They are Americans!
Not sure they were safe, Thanh and his friend ran back to the village.
As they were running through the tall grass, Yu saw an American soldier running toward the small village at the edge of the field. He also spotted Viet Cong hiding in the brush across the small road. Waiting for the crack of the sniper's rifle once the soldier and the boys reached the edge of the field, Yu scanned the area where he saw the sniper in the brush. Vinh's eyes were fixed on the soldier running toward the spot where his doom awaited.
Buddy, you see something moving in the brush by the palm tree?
Nah, you?
Vinh didn't respond. Instead, he ran toward the area to look for the Viet Cong. Not realizing he would be spotted, Vinh abruptly stopped at the edge of the road and covered his mouth with his tiny hands, and stared with wide-open eyes. The sniper did not know another soldier was hiding behind an abandoned vehicle concealed by the brush. Seconds after Vinh appeared at the roadside, the soldier appeared at the edge of the brush. Before the sniper could put a round through the soldier's skull, Vinh shuddered, watching the point of a large knife coming out the other side of the Viet Cong's neck.
I hate this place!
What?!
