About this ebook

Hidden treasures can be deadly.

The annual Spring-Cleaning Auction is kicking off in Lake Falls, Texas and twin sisters Samantha and Lizzie Brown are each hoping to snag a hidden treasure. But when a mysterious armoire is accidentally purchased by an erratic paddle-waving bidder, the sisters find themselves embroiled in a dangerous mystery.

Using her connections as a local reporter, Samantha investigates the origins of the armoire, only to discover it may be tied to a counterfeiting operation on the outskirts of town. Lizzie, who works for a private investigator, digs into the suspects, which include a wealthy widow, an auction appraiser, and a gossip columnist.

As the twins delve deeper into the case, they find themselves dodging greedy suspects and a secret that threatens to tear the town apart. Despite the dangers, they are determined to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt.

Will Samantha and Lizzie be able to catch the criminals and put an end to the counterfeiting operation once and for all? Or will the secrets hidden within the armoire turn out to be deadly?

    Chapter 1

    Same as it Never Was

    Samantha

I tipped the brim of my cowboy hat and slung the lead rope over a fence post. After twenty minutes in the round pen with the new cutting horse, I was no closer to gaining his trust. His beautiful black mane fluttered in the breeze as he gazed into the field, completely uninterested in me. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get him to join up. But I never lost a stubborn contest and I wasn’t planning to start today.

With a deep breath, I marched across the pen. The rancher who sold him boasted about his natural cow sense and my dad bought the four-year-old sight unseen. A silly way to do business but people in our small town gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and still operated under handshake agreements.

I spun the rope in a slow circle and approached the horse. He darted in the opposite direction and poked his head over the railing. The whole point of the join-up was to keep him running until he relaxed and formed a bond with me. It would never work without the free lunge stage.

With a dramatic sigh, I plopped on the ground and crossed my boots at the ankles. What’s the problem, Licorice? The Twin Bluebonnet Ranch is a nice place to live. I narrowed my gaze as his ears twitched. Perhaps it’s the dumb name you don’t like. Every third horse is named Licorice despite the fact it is the worst candy, bar none.

He bobbed his head and whinnied.

I suppose that counts as progress. You’re at least acknowledging my existence. I cocked my head to the side and considered his name change. He needed something fitting for his personality… whatever that was. What about Maverick or Thunder?

His nostrils flared and he trotted in the other direction.

No need to be dramatic, I’ll keep thinking about it.

My Dalmatian dog barked in the field, eager to greet her new buddy. My friends and I rescued the puppy a year earlier from a cave-in and ranch life suited her perfectly. She loved all our animals from the chickens to the cows, but the horses took the top rank.

I hopped to my feet and dusted off my jeans. Whodunit, allow me to introduce you to… I approached the horse and he twisted away. Skittish seems quite appropriate.

Whodunit propped her front paws on the wooden railing and rested her chin between the slats. I scratched behind her ears. Don’t worry with your charm, you are sure to win him over.

Dirt kicked into the air as a car sped along the rocky driveway. Not recognizing the make or model, I squinted to read the license plate. The Texas tags didn’t eliminate the possibility of a dude ranch visitor but our expected guests hailed from Arkansas.

The nondescript sedan didn’t belong to anyone I knew, which was never a good sign. I had enough trouble muddling through small talk with the townspeople I’d known since birth. Strangers were way out of my league. What a perfect day for my outgoing twin sister to leave me alone.

After raising five kids, my parents were practically retired and often left the ranch business to us – the youngest and most responsible of the Brown clan. In the division of dude ranch duties, Lizzie managed the people and I took care of the horses. That was our deal.

The car came to an abrupt stop twenty feet from the barn and honked. City slickers acted allergic to carrying their own bags. As if I
