    Preliminaries

It happened again last night. As before, I woke up screaming like crazy. The horrible nightmare I've had for a few years has attacked me again. The same dream as always, the same people haunting me, the same dark vegetation, coldness, anxiety, horror, despair... And once again, I got to the same place where a group of men in uniforms with torches in their hands and dark faces captures me. This is the moment when I cry out desperately and awake; every time when I get to that place.

Something terrifying and unbelievable hides in these nightmares. It's about something that actually happened, but not me. I wouldn't have been curious to write this research in the form of a book if I haven't found out something creepy; my grandmother from mother's side suffered exactly the same kind of nightmares as I do. And not only that, there's something much worse. It happened shortly after these dreams began. My grandmother died and as the only inheritance left me a card with just four scary words in it: ≪You're cursed too≫

My grandmother was the most horrible human being I've ever met. The things she did, the atrocities she committed are those that are being told and are hard to believe.

But let's not go ahead with the events. Every story should start at its beginning. This one started in the Communist Russia of Joseph Stalin. Something that happened in a cold train station marked the dramatic beginning of everything.

    Chapter One

    The Farewell of Galina

On January 19th, 1933, Galina Kormunova arrived by train to Leningradsky station in Moscow with her husband Dimitri Korsakov, the substitute captain of the Aurora Cruise. They were destined to the offices of the Ministry of War, where Dimitri had to deliver some medical reports related to his application for a definitive retirement because of the health issues.

≪Wait for me in here, dear —said Dimitri affectionately—. The weather outside is very bad. You don't have to join me. I don't think it will take more than a couple of hours≫

It was heavily snowing. The temperatures were about twenty-five degrees Celsius below the zero. In other circumstances, Dimitri would have been accompanied by his wife, but it was not advisable due to her current state of pregnancy. She was seven months pregnant, so they both agreed that it was better to avoid unnecessary risks.

Galina said goodbye to her husband with a hug, a little kiss on the cheek and a promise to wait for him sitting on a bench in the railway station not leaving anywhere. They never saw each other again.

Shortly after Dimitri left, Galina noticed a gigantic jubilation among the present people. A strong police contingent entered the terminal pushing and distributing bumps in all directions. To those who were standing they turned the faces to the walls to make careful revisions, and those who were seated, like Galina, forced to stand up to join the others.

As the inspection proceeded, the senior agent selected random people and ordered his subordinates to take them out. The chosen ones were pushed and brought with deliberate rudeness into one of the police buses parked at the entrance of the railway terminal.

Galina, surprised and curious, tried to find out what the police was looking for from an elderly woman who was at her side. The old lady answered by showing her documents.

    ≪Papers, papers...!≫ — she said repeatedly.

Galina extracted from her coat her national identity document and the new passport that empowered her to travel through the capital. The government had decreed that anyone who wouldn't have documents and show them to the police authorities upon being required would be expelled from Moscow immediately. And to those who were additionally begging, they would be deported to the areas of Siberia and sentenced to spend the rest of their days there. Stalin's government considered them to be socially damaging individuals for their country, so they should be abhorred.

When came her turn to show the papers, Galina stood with her arm extended, holding them in the hand. The police chief simply didn't want to see them. He passed by and made a gesture to his subordinates to transfer her to the bus along with the rest of the detained.

≪But what is going on? — she asked surprised — Where are you taking me? Here are my papers. They are all in order. Besides, I'm pregnant. I can't go out there in my state≫

    But they ignored her requests.

When they took her by the arms, she exclaimed:

    ≪Listen! Wait a moment! I'm married to a Navy officer!≫

And saying this, she refused to walk.

It didn't do her any good. Two officials dragged her to the bus.

When she reached the door, she clung with all her strength to the sides. One of the officers took out the nightstick and gave her two brutal hits; one in the back and the other in the back of her head, a few inches from the nape. If it had been just a bit stronger, it would have left her dead right there. The cranial impact automatically provoked considerable swelling.

Stunned and deeply in pain, she let them carry her away with total submissiveness. She realized that it was not worth resisting, that with those people she has to walk with extreme caution. Her biggest concern was that the fruit of her womb would not suffer any kind of injury.

≪As soon as they bring us to the station, these damned will get to know who
