    SPIRAL - T. L. CONN

    Chapter 1

The hour was late. Fatigue gnawed at the shoulders of the hopeful who had waited endless hours and days for word of recovery, faith alone, lifting belief that all would be well again.

The waiting room at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital was nearly empty now. Only the low, monotonous sound of the TV news commentator periodically broke the silence. The Covid 19 Pandemic had just claimed one million American souls. Variants and mutations were still surging, assuring that number would rise. Even so, true heroism prevailed as medical staff across the country gave their all to save as many as they could. Tonight, a miraculous recovery was underway.

33-year-old, Kathryn Peters, was finally coming out of a medically induced coma. It was a Hail Mary measure to save her life as she had been induced and placed on a ventilator for 42 days during her life-and-death struggle.

The inner door opened, and a nurse stepped into the waiting room. She quietly approached Kathryn’s sister, Jackie, and sat down next to her.

She’s doing well. It will be some time until she is fully awake, but her lungs are taking oxygen, and her blood count has greatly improved. She’s going to make it. Go home and rest now.

As Kathryn began to wake, her body felt like lead. It was difficult to move about, her throat felt scratchy, and her back was stiff and sore. Confused, she slowly brought her hand to her chest and stared at the ceiling. Where was she? What had happened to her?

Nightmarish visions still filled her mind of strange people and frightening events. She wanted to return to reality but was unable to discern which path to take. Flashbacks were swirling within her consciousness in a continual loop. She closed her eyes and concentrated on every breath.

When she again opened her eyes, she searched the room for clues. Yet nothing in her surroundings was familiar. Even those with her were unrecognizable as masks, and protective clothing covered their bodies.

Welcome back, Kathryn. You’ve been asleep for a long time, said the nurse.

    Asleep? questioned Kathryn.

Yes, a long time, added the nurse. We’re taking good care of you. Dr. Fridrich is on his way.

The nurse hovered around her, making her comfortable and warm.

Kathryn’s mind drifted in and out of fogginess for several minutes as she tried to focus more clearly. She noticed a white clock on the wall and wondered if it was day or night.

Dr. Fridrich is here now, Kathryn.

The nurse stepped aside, allowing the doctor to stand next to her.

When she turned toward him, she saw a tall man dressed in scrubs. Instantly, she felt a jolt of shock. His eyes were terrifying, and his body appeared to morph into two different identities, shifting back and forth yet somehow staying the same. She recoiled, filled with horror, and clenched her fists. Desperately, she tried to push away from him but felt frozen in place, too weak to move. Then, reality spiraled out of control, forcing her mind into another temporal dimension.

You will tell us what we want to know, Fraulein. We do not wish to harm you further.

Kathryn was seated in a chair across from a uniformed German Commandant. Two SS guards stood on either side of her. She sensed she’d seen the Commandant somewhere before, there was something about his eyes that seemed familiar.

Was this 1945 Nazi Germany? Was she being interrogated? If so, how and for what? She responded to his threats, surprised by her own German accent.

I do not know what it is you want from me, she answered.

Her body ached from numerous blows, and the straps binding her to the chair cut deep into her swollen wrists. How was this possible? She couldn’t make sense of her predicament. Was it World War II? Did they think she was a spy or with the resistance?

Where are your comrades hiding? Tell us where they are, the Commandant demanded.

I do not know, sir. I do not know.

    Again.

Immediately, one of the guards struck her, and she reeled with the pain. The Commandant rose from his chair and approached her, leaning inches away from her face, menacing and dangerous.

We have many methods to get what we want, Fraulein. It would be a shame to destroy such a pretty face. You would be wise to save yourself.
