Introduction
You might be familiar with this famous quote by one of the most successful investors of all time, Warren Buffett: wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they are doing
. How would you interpret Buffett's opinion on diversification?
For some, this is their cue to withdraw from all other investments and put their resources into the one they believe to be the strongest. The problem here is that not even Warren Buffett uses this strategy. It is one that leaves the investor extremely vulnerable. It presumes that there is a way to accurately predict the future. There isn't. So long as we have to operate in volatile and uncertain economies, diversification will always be the golden rule of investment.
So, was Buffet wrong? In fact, he was spot on. He simply meant that diversification should not be used as a way to mask utter ignorance about how to properly invest. When you are ill-informed or have no real knowledge about investing, you could fall into the trap of widely diversifying your portfolio.
Diversification isn't the only band-aid used by some investors to cover up their bullet wound of ignorance. For some, it is faith in their vast supply of cash that can enable them to survive after numerous mistakes, or paying other people to make investment decisions for them.
In the end, nothing beats knowing what you and your money are getting into when it comes to investing. If you have decided to create a stream of passive income by investing, you must begin this journey by gaining useful knowledge in the particular sectors that you have chosen. And this is where this book, Stock Trading Ledger, comes in.
The merit of this book isn't only that it has been written with simplicity, such that even those who have no idea what stock trading is can be enlightened and edified by it. Stock Trading Ledger has also taken into consideration many of the pain points expressed by new and experienced investors.
One common problem is the issue of networking. While you may not choose to set up a Limited Liability Company (LLC) for your investments, you will still need the help of other successful and experienced investors to find good deals and make profitable decisions. But what are the steps to go about expanding your network? And what is the right attitude to present in the world of investment?
Successfully growing your network of investors isn't the only issue that is tackled here. What if you do want to set up a company for your investments? First, is this even the right move? But more importantly, how would you go about this unusual venture?
It's not enough to get the right paperwork that qualifies your company as an LLC. In fact, for example, you might find that trying to register your business with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Investment Advisor Registration Depository (IARD) is the easiest part of establishing your company. Once that is finalized, you must think about branding, delegation of certain tasks (hiring), and marketing. These three—branding, hiring, and marketing—are some of the biggest reasons why new businesses fail. This book will strip down these concepts and provide time-tested solutions.
By reading Stock Trading Ledger, you will learn the various paths that investors can take into the stock market. You could buy and sell stocks, which is the most common option for traders, or you could invest in bonds, mutual funds, index funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). If you have always sought a comprehensive explanation for these trading options, you will find them in this book.
Maybe you're not exactly a fan of stock trading. Instead, you can give the real estate market, hedge funds, or commodities a go. Although this book focuses on the stock market, you will learn just why investing (whichever way you choose to do so) is the key to financial security. As such, you should find some way to grow your money by investing.
This largest portion of this book is dedicated to stock trading journals or ledgers. In fact, two separate chapters in this book discuss the subject: one is concerned with the understanding of ledgers, while the other allows the reader to actively record their trading experiences. This is because the only way to grow as a stock trader is with a journal. Now, your journal doesn't have to be similar in every way to those of other investors. But it should help you remember the past and reveal both your flaws and progress.
Probably the biggest problem, especially for new investors, is the scarcity of correct and comprehensive information on how to invest. There is no shortage of internet gurus selling courses and sure-fire strategies. This is not to say that there aren't honest and experienced stock traders sharing their wealth of knowledge, but they are uncommon and often they are catering to those who already know the basics
