The story of a young man named Guillermo Correces who was a self-supporting student at Philippine Union College now Adventist University of the Philippines; and with a willingness to succeed; finished his degree in teaching but due to Gods over arching plan for his life, he was led into a full-time career of drafting and building schools and institutions for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Philippines. He managed to start up with a blueprint of the Philippine Publishing House , then was called to teach at West Visayan Academy where he was enabled to utilize his skills in drafting and construction to upgrade and erect new infrastructure for the Academy and from there his continued calls led him to Mindanao and build a hospital  and Mountain View College was built from the forests of MVC  and before his retirement he was part of the growth of the South Philippine Union Conference as it envisioned new directions in education and medicine by building the Davao Adventist Hospital and the South Philippine Union Conference headquarters and in parallel started the development of the now existing South Philippine Adventist College in Managa and it included the planning and the survey of the  Adventist University of the Philippines in 1975.

Gilbert Correces

Gilbert Loyola Correces graduated with an MSW from the University of the Philippines through a Lewis Lim Scholarship. When he immigrated to Canada, he upgraded himself with EDP and computer programming at York University Continuing Education Programme and worked with the government and private sector in Information Technology as a Business Analyst and Systems Coordinator. He has also past experience teaching high school and Elementary School. Before retirement he worked as a Medical Caseworker and as a private practitioner RSW counsellor. He is currently retired and lives in the City of Toronto, Canada. He enjoys biking, writing and looking after one of his 8 grandchildren.

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED to Guillermo Ramirez-Correces who left this world at 73 after losing his battle with Metastatic Lung Cancer.  Guillermo’s life was a journey with God between B (birth) and D (death). He spent his life answering the Cs of his life, they were calls for service in the Lord’s work. Guillermo lived a life answering the call to service in God’s work with unwavering dedication and commitment. His selflessness and tireless efforts to plan, draft, and construct buildings that were not there before and to have them stand and be used for years to come is a legacy to his service and love to God. The buildings will not last, but some continue to serve as places for the people that have been touched, and as testaments to his commitment to carry out what was required of him by his calling. Despite his full-time self-supporting status as a student at Philippine Union College, he was able to finish his bachelor’s degree in history as an adjunct to his drafting and construction vocations, which resulted in buildings for Philippine Publishing House, West Visayan Academy, Mindanao Sanitarium & Hospital now Iligan Adventist Medical Centre, Mountain View College, South Philippine Union Conference HQ, South Philippine Adventist College, Davao Adventist Hospital, and Adventist University of the Philippines. His early death from cancer of the lungs was a result of the lack of health and safety protocols during his days working in the furniture shop.

Guillermo, you lived your life answering the call to service in God’s work. You have shown us what it truly means to be a servant of God and a friend to man.

Dalisay Loyola-Correces

THIS BOOK IS ALSO DEDICATED to Dalisay Loyola-Correces who carried out her duties as a wife, a loving mother, and a grandmother. She totally dedicated her life to filling the role of nurturer to her husband and four children despite the difficult living circumstances. Together with her husband’s meager salary, she worked as a colporteur and managed to send the four children to school. Learning photography as a hobby, she developed it into a business, which helped the family throughout its MVC tenure. She lived a full life till she was 88 and died due to complications with diabetes though she outlived her husband by twelve years. She is now resting in peace while awaiting the Lord’s return.

From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness... all things animate and inanimate, in their shadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love. GC, 456,2.

As one who played more of a lifetime role in observing and living with Guillermo Correces, I am humbled, privileged, and with a sincere spirit, honored to take on this task to write my father’s story combined with my personal experiences concerning him.

TWIN TOWERS 2001 BEFORE 9/11 

The New York Port Authority hired Architect Minuro Yamasaki who came up with a specific idea about building the twin towers. It was called the World Trade Center which was dedicated to the concept of achieving world peace through trade. It cost $400 million.

Islamic extremism was stirred by the Iranian revolution, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the assassination of the Egyptian president. Extremism turned into anti-Americanism because of US support for Israel and secular Arab regimes.

The September 11 attack transformed the first term of USA President George W. Bush to what was called the war on terror. A new word came into being, terrorist, to go with terrorism in the classification of an enemy.

WORLD TRADE CENTER AT GROUND ZERO TODAY-  2023

Last September 11, 2001, we watched the television breaking news of the twin towers of New York City World Trade Center collapsing against a familiar skyline, and black smoke rising from the rubble. The event now known as 9/11 was a wakeup call for everyone about how Al-Qaeda terrorists attack and how tall buildings collapse from this action; how such buildings are connected not only to the individuals within them but also to the inhabitants of surrounding communities. The way the rise and fall of buildings impact the lives of individuals and of the general population they are part of is fascinating. Archaeological digs across the earth bare the skeletons or leftover frames of buildings with stories to tell, providing material for historical narratives.

In parallel to the twin tower stories, The Draftsman Chronicles tells Guillermo’s story founded on the buildings he helped to erect.

This book is dedicated to the Seventh-day Adventist pioneers of Philippine church ministry in health and education. When the Americans came over to the Philippines in the 1940’s, the Seventh-day Adventist faith quickly made its way to the hearts of the Filipino people, redefining a Christian nation founded on Catholicism.

My thanks to the following: Pastor Herminio Reyes, who encouraged me to author this book; Bangele Alsaybar and Pastor V.M. Montalban who provided impetus for The Draftsman Chronicles by helping me to navigate the background of the Western Visayan Mission.

Dr. Francisco Geslani for his role in the heading of the Mindanao Sanitarium & Hospital, and the Miller Sanitarium & Hospital; V. M. Montalban and Primitivo Reyes who were instrumental in the creation of Mountain View College and South Philippine Union Mission (now Conference); And finally my thanks to my mother Dalisay Loyola who never gave up and never failed to support her husband Guillermo and to my patient wife Clevelinda who has put up with my typing shenanigans when writing this book and to God be the Glory for the success of the Philippine Island mission field ministry.

I would like to give special mention to Dr. Demetrio Hechanova Sr. who supported Guillermo in upgrading his drafting skills by equipping him with tools, resources, and books from the United States. My gratitude also goes to the unnamed workers and student volunteers who toiled with him tirelessly during the pioneering construction days of West Visayan Academy, Mountain View College, Iligan and Davao City.

I also thank John L. Odom whom I befriended through Facebook, providing me with vital information about how Guillermo Correces also taught high school carpentry as a vocational subject at the academy level during his student days at Philippine Union College.

John witnessed the beginnings of PUC & MVC in his work as missionary volunteer in the Philippines, and as a missionary kid, he was around great stalwarts like Dr. Andrew Nathaniel Nelson and Professor Lawrence Murphy Stump who were with the early SDA education work in the Philippines. My greatest thanks are to God who gave me the original ideas and thoughts to remember and find out about stories that I encountered in my own personal life to supplement those from my father’s experiences, resulting in The Draftsman Chronicles.

Esteban and Elisa Ramirez-Correces raised nine children with Guillermo as the eldest, a jack of all trades and a wannabe engineer. He was a creative carpenter at an early age. He was the leader of the pack, so to speak.

From his early childhood, Guillermo was trained to work with his father in supporting the family. Being the eldest, the responsibility of leadership and being in charge was his forte. His father was a college graduate and had a job as a government employee with the department of health and that kept him away from home most of the time, so it was Guillermos lot to look after his siblings when his father was away.

Esteban Correces had a sister named Julie and she had a family as well.

On the next page, is the picture of Julia Correces-Salvosa children in their adult years.

The couples and their children, Fernando and Silveria have 6, Paulo and Consejo have 3, Nilda and Alfredo have 2, and Severino and Gregoria have 2. A total of 19 grandchildren with Julia Correces and Claro Salvosa. Most of them live in California.

From Roberta and Husband Gregorio Tena. Nana Opre begets Nana Maura who has a daughter name Raquel Morga and that is how the Legazpi family joins the Correces clan.

Conrado Legazpi married Raquel Morga who is the daughter of Dominador Maura Morga and their children are Belle, Emeline, Shirley and Conrad. They are Distant cousins of the Correces clan.

THE THIRD BROTHER VIRGILIO, was one uncle I never met but he was known to be a soldier with the Philippine army and died in WWII (During the Japanese Occupation in the Philippines) when he was captured by the Japanese, he was part of the Bataan death march where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers captured, died due to the brutality and torture they injured as they marched towards the prison camps in Bataan.

The Bataan death march. This was the march to Bataan Japanese prison camps and were composed of Philippine Army, American USAFFE and Guerilla prisoners-of-war and those who survived recall the beatings and torture that their fellow soldiers endured, because many died along the way due to malnutrition, infection from injuries and being tortured along the way by the kempetai soldiers. Virgilio died as a prisoner of war.

Evelyn Correces never married and finished a BSEEd and taught at Palawan Adventist Academy. Amelia Correces never went to college and decided to focus in looking after her parents during their senior years and oversaw the house in Polillio, Quezon.

The fourth child was a daughter, Rosa, who died after the war and the fifth child was Fanny and she got married to Proceso Hernandez, a businessperson who perished in the famous fire (1959) disaster of the Bernie boat while crossing the Pacific Ocean from Real, Quezon to Polillo Island. Fanny had an only daughter named Agnes.

Agnes married Gil Villamater, Sr. and had 3 children, Melissa, Gil Jr., and Jon Eric. Melissa got married to a Bermudez who died early in their married life, and had Thom Daryl, and had Sasha Christiana Bermudez; but later she married Garry Amparo, and she had Mikaila and Gianina Amparo.

Sixth the seventh daughter was Lydia, and her twin sister Lea was the seventh daughter who did not survive the respiratory disease of TB and died at the adult age of 20 and was the twin sister or aunt we never met. Note this is where our twin DNA comes from.

Lydia was a businessperson and could never stay home but be with her friends. She mastered a great social networking business.

HERNANDO RAMIREZ-CORRECES FAMILY.

FINALLY, THE ELEVENTH and youngest child was a son named Hernando. He also studied in Mountain View College and continued his education at Philippine Union College, and he got his bachelor's degree in accounting at PUC and started his career working as the Municipal Treasurer for the Municipality of Polillo and then later as Treasurer of the Cagayan Valley Adventist Hospital. He married a Physician by the name of Aida Hernandez, and they had three children, Steve, Odysseus, and Charina.

DALISAY LOYOLA FAMILY TREE

Dalisay Loyola (Dely) was born to Bonifacio Loyola and Maria Manabat in Binan, Laguna and she is the youngest of three siblings. In addition, she had three half-siblings with her mother, Maria Manabat who had a previous marriage to a certain Mr. Reyes, so half-sister Andrea Reyes (Nana Anding a daughter from Maria Manabat’s first husband) Daniel Reyes and Roman Reyes & Andrea Reyes were Dalisay’s half-siblings from her mother.

Bernardina took it upon herself to look after Dalisay who was the youngest in the family since their parents died early in their life. I remember the first vacation we had in Binan. Grandma Maria was dying and lying in her bed. and they fed her grapes, and I wanted some grapes for myself since we did not have them in Mountain View College, but my cousins all said it was only for Lola because she was very ill. She passed away and I attended my first funeral in Binan and was delighted to be a part of a large group of relatives; so, if we go through Dalisay’s family tree in detail, we will definitely have a lot of blanks.

The oldest son is Dr. Red Alinsod with his family. Left to right are Samantha, Dillon, Matthew, and Brittney (not present), Robyn (spouse) and Dr. Red. Dr. Red Alinsod is a well-known specialist in Vulvovaginal Surgery and founded the "Alinsod Institute for Aesthetic Vulvovaginal Surgery in 2005 and he has two Institutes one in Irvine, California and the other in Texas. Currently, Dr. Red Alinsod is leading the Institute in Texas.
