Long Beach, California, was the last place I wanted to be on spring break. However, the majority rules, and now I can only hope to have a good time. At first, I'm doubtful, knowing that I'll probably end up babysitting my drunk friends while they all get laid...

Anna

T his is ridiculous, and I don't see why we have to be here.

Oh, Jesus, Anna, my best friend, Carmen, snapped. Lighten up, will you? It's California. Live a little.

Easy for you to say. I sighed and dropped my duffel bag onto the tacky hotel comforter. It was hot in the room, humid, and smelled like sex—but not the appealing kind, more like the drunken orgy kind… booze, semen, and sweat.

She doesn't like the heat, Sarah reminded Carmen. Her vote was Alaska, remember?

At least Alaska is cool and doesn't smell like a whorehouse, I mumbled. Carmen shot me another look from the bed, eyes flashing up from the screen of her cell phone long enough to roll her eyes. I wanted so badly to warn her that the blanket she was relaxing on had probably never been washed, but I kept my mouth shut and went into the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face instead.

Did you see that guy who checked us in? Sarah asked from the other room. He's dreamy.

I know. Maybe we can convince him to take Anna on a date, Carmen said. She needs to get laid.

I pulled my drab brown hair back into a ponytail, secured it on top of my head, and then craned my neck around the open door.

I can hear you, I said. And is it vital to use a word like 'convince'? I'm not a dog.

Of course, you're not, honey, Carmen said. You're gorgeous.

Okay, I wasn't the picture-perfect beauty queen like Carmen or the girl-next-door cute like Sarah, but I had some things going for me. I wasn't as slender as my friends, but that only blessed me with a pair of fantastic boobs. Whereas Carmen had long, black hair that flowed down her back like a waterfall, mine was thick, fuzzy, and brown and ballooned into an unmanageable jungle in the humidity. I was chubby and not very tall, which made a destination like California the last place I wanted to be for spring break. But the majority had won, so here we were.

What's first on the agenda? Carmen asked. I really want to go swimming."

I do, too, Sarah said. She pulled out her personalized itinerary—ever the control freak—and skimmed through it as I silently moped about the room, cringing at the thought of getting into the water, which meant putting on a swimsuit and making sure all my rolls were appropriately tucked away.

Tonight is that beach party, Sarah said, handing Carmen the paper. Tomorrow is surfing.
