    CHAPTER ONE

    WELCOME TO THE BEACH HOOD

Buffy McFee knew Ida needed a place to live and since the hut was flea-ridden she was sure Ida would have no choice but to say yes and did. It was a small grey-blue-colored older home in shoddy shape and had the customary mold smell Ida was accustomed to. The rent was $100.00 with utilities, Ida offered up her kids to fix the place up in gratitude for the chance to start over with a fresh and new home. 5 years had come and gone and now it was the space age all new and fresh- 1960 was the year and it was a sign that the world for Ida will be anew.

Surfing was a pastime for the youth and some older folks who never grew up in the cove, they spent their days riding the waves that only the cove can make with its wide front opening and tight curvy rocks behind.

Ida paid the exterminator to use the dangerous chemical Buffy said no to, it would kill the animals and cause cancer, but Ida hated fleas, it reminded her of the Grapes of Wrath shed her family lived in during the fruit picking season near Watsonville. She had to hide from the FBI somewhere and felt great while she exploited her son Bobby to do all the picking while she picked on him for his lack of social skills. His 1952 Chevy coupe in pea green would barely make it up the hill from San Jose plus the brakes would overheat since Bobby rode the brakes due to having one eye and not seeing the left traffic.

Ida made plenty of money with her Hot and Heavy Gin Rummy games in the farm workers’ sheds, Manuel told her she was the Card Bandito, and she said: you can go to town if you want a good game if you don’t like mine you fool.

Buffy was the only one who knew Ida’s whereabouts besides Bobby, his wife, and Ida’s rest of the family had no idea where she was, hiding in plain sight a few miles down Hi-Way 1. The manager came to Ida’s work shed and gave her a phone message that Buffy said was a go. Ida knew that code and packed up and headed for 420 Seagull Court in Dark Cove.

Her trusty Willys made the journey, well kept from years of staying
