Answering That of God: Discovering Spirit Within
By Peter M Parr
()
About this ebook
Quakers claim that there is that of the Spirit within everyone. We are sacred beings, made from the 'stuff' of the divine Originating Power and able to be in resonance with it today. Quaker worship is based on that amazing fact and the Quaker Way of life is a direct outcome from it. What was once considered heresy is now a growing spiritual understanding.
What do Quakers mean when we speak of 'that of God'? And what would be the implications if we held an awareness of the Divine in everyone all of the time? What if we tried genuinely to live this belief day by day, minute by minute, in the encounters we have with our family, with our friends, at work, and in society at large?
'Answering that of God' is an invitation and a challenge to explore these questions. It examines Who we really are; reflects on the spiritual values that lie behind the Quaker witness to Truth, Equality, Simplicity and Peace; exhorts us to Let our Lives Speak and finally, in Remembering, urges us to find daily ways of prompting ourselves to do so. Each section offers scope for reflection.

Introduction
The Quaker Advices and queries speak of ‘that of God in everyone’. God is not only ‘out there’, but also ‘in here’, at the heart of each one of us. Every person has a divine spark within them.
This claim is astonishing, particularly in today’s materialistic society. The majority of people, at least in the West, would dismiss the idea as crazy. Religious leaders might denounce it as heresy, even though there are passages in the Bible which point to the same truth. Nevertheless, through the ages and across continents, there have always been those who, when they looked at another, understood they were looking at themselves. Seers and mystics of all religious traditions have seen through the veil of form and recognised the essential oneness of all things.
Quaker faith is, of course, grounded in personal experience. One of the strengths of the Society of Friends is that we do not accept something simply because others tell us it is true, or because it is written in a book. But there is no getting away from the fact that early Friends did hold a belief in ‘that of God in everyone’, and that we still profess it when we read from the Advices and queries in our meetings.
But what do Quakers mean when we speak of ‘that of God’? And what would be the implications if we held an awareness of the Divine in everyone all of the time? What if we tried genuinely to live this belief day by day, minute by minute, in the encounters we have with our family, with our friends, at work, and in society at large?
This book is an invitation and a challenge to explore these questions.
A note about words
At best, words are pointers. They are tools we can use to describe an experience, but they are no substitute for experience itself. The word ‘God’, like any other word, is a human construct. It is an attempt to describe what cannot be described. When I use the word ‘God’, I use it as shorthand for that which is eternal: Being, Essence, Is-ness. Some would call this Light, or Love, or Spirit. If you are uncomfortable with the word ‘God’, I encourage you to substitute another which speaks to your condition.
I don’t ask you to agree with what you read, or to accept it. I invite you to reflect on the words. Read a paragraph or two, a section at most, and then put the book to one side. Close your eyes and become aware of your breathing. Contemplate on what you’ve read. Consider your own experience, however similar or different to mine. Then take a pen and write down your own reflections. Not the beliefs you were brought up with, or those you’ve read about elsewhere, but your own. There is a still small voice in all of us, a source of inspiration and guidance. Listen, then, and trust that words will be given to you. What feels true for you?
Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.
WHO WE ARE
Imagine you are standing on the shore of the ocean, the waves breaking gently at your feet. You wade in a little way, and you take an empty glass and dip it in the water. What are you holding in the glass? It is not the ocean. The ocean is still there and has not been diminished to any visible degree. But the water is of the ocean: from it, and like it. Its essence is the same. For me, God is like the ocean. And God’s Spirit within us is like the water in the glass.
