.
The lights from this side of the stage were blinding. They had all zeroed in on Izra, leaving the rest of the auditorium a dark void. On the other side, invisible, sat some three hundred convention attendees. They were readers, writers, fans of all stripes and scales. In the front of the stage was the camera, a giant eye projecting this interview for all the thousands who couldn’t be there in person.
. . . but I need not go on all night about Mr. Zarai’s works and accomplishments. I’m certain the majority of you are familiar with them already,
said the host, prompting a few chuckles from the crowd.
Izra smiled and nodded, as he had been doing for the last ten minutes as the host, Mr. Whatever-His-Name-Is, had droned on and on about the history of the annual Byraz Science Fiction Convention before finally getting to Izra. Izra’s smile became a little less forced. Well, Mr. Whatever had good taste in fiction, at least. The same could not be said for his attire. A silver jacket was a poor choice for that sort of, ah, body frame. Though it looked more comfortable than the long-necked tunic Izra was wearing, cooked under these mad lights.
Izra snapped back into attention as Mr. Whatever took a seat across from him. Finally.
Thank you so much for joining us this evening, Izra,
Mr. Whatever said with a warm smile, reaching over to shake Izra’s hand.
Thank you for having me . . .
Izra paused as they shook hands. Damn it, what the hell was his name? . . . my friend.
"Well, let’s get right down
