About the Book
Wine Me, Dine Me, Dance Me, Romance Me, reads like an evolving collage of romantic experiences framed in poetic style. In many ways, the collection represents an autobiographical sketch in romance. It begins by providing snapshots of Gene Hewett’s early relationships, evolves to romantic accounts as viewed through the eyes of a fictional son, and concludes with romantic descriptions provided by that son’s daughter. The collection has a traditional table of contents, a second one, titled Musical Inspiration
(which includes QR codes) and a third, titled Photographic Images.
The second table of contents illustrates the author’s desire to match specific songs, the majority of which are rhythm and blues, such as Ain’t No Way,
to each poem. In the short run, the author envisions that the collection will be made available in electronic form, as a paperback, and for hardcover distribution. In addition, owing to the musical theme, the author anticipates that the collection can be presented in audiobook form. In the long run, the author anticipates that it may be possible to package the collection in a stage-production format (complete with a speaker, background music, and PowerPoint images—with optional dance choreography).
The third table of contents shows the author’s ability to enhance the spirit and mood of each poem by linking them to a digital image obtained from the istockphoto.com or corbisimage.com websites. The majority of the digital images were based upon floral themes, such as Close-Up View of a Pink Rose
and landscape themes such as Wildflowers at Malibu Beach.
Several digital image selections, such as Glass of Wine with Cork and Rosebuds,
departed from the floral and landscape patterns in order to further highlight a unique mood.

I recall hanging a favorite poster on one of my bedroom walls during the early seventies. The quote on the poster read, We are all molded and remolded by those who love and have loved us, no love, no friendship, can ever cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark upon it forever
(Sun Ray, The Thought Factory, 1973). At the time, I didn’t realize the role these few words would play in capturing the theme that flows throughout Wine Me, Dine Me, Dance Me, Romance Me. Over time I have been blessed with more than one once-in-a-lifetime,
passionately romantic relationship. I have also had the privilege of experiencing several platonic, yet unforgettable, friendships. However, the true origins of my feelings about the beauty and grace and charm of women have their roots in my early upbringing.
I am particularly grateful to my late mother, Ms. Florence L. Hewett, my late sister Ms. Lynette I. Griffin, and my sister Ms. Elma Rowena Wilson-Vaughan. To each of them I wish to say thank you for instilling in me the confidence to know that it is possible to survive life’s occasional heartaches. I thank them for helping me to realize that sometimes when I least expect it, a chance encounter may unveil the promise and potential for new romance.
In addition, sincere appreciation is extended to all the girls and women I’ve loved before, to all the girls and women who have shared their friendship with me, and to all the girls and women who simply shared with me a kind look, a kind word, a friendly smile, a passing hello, or an encouraging hug. Finally, I express a special thank-you to all the friends, coworkers, and students who listened to a poem, proofread the ever-growing collection, or assisted me in finding the right word or description for a particular line or stanza. For without the assistance of their eyes, ears, and suggestions, I might still be writing additional episodes to what could easily become an ongoing collage of life experiences framed in poetic style.
