WILDE & WITCHY PART 6: Someone to Witch Over Me

Dani Harper exited the coffee shop with her new favorite fall drink—a maple latte made with real Maine maple syrup. She giggled when her security detail—the giant of a bear shifter named Derek, slurped on his own with a giant grin on his face. She'd had to talk him into trying it but twisting his arm hadn't been all that hard. Turns out, bears love maple syrup just about as much as they love honey.

It was taking its toll, not having her privacy and adjusting to having her every move happen under the watchful care of either her mate, Galen Wilde, or one of her father's personal security guards—Dom, Derek, or Damien. But this was her life until she'd gotten rid of the Meena problem. Something she'd spent the last few weeks focusing on, heavily.

Learning new spells. Research. Mock battles. Trying to master her skills as a witch as well as track her aunt. And while the mock battles were proving beneficial, tracking Meena had proven impossible, thus far. Dani was hardly giving up though.

And this evening, she'd needed some fresh air and a break and some shopping. Ingrid, the clothing store owner, had set aside a new arrival just for Dani and she was counting down the hours to try it on for her mate who was currently on duty as the island's sheriff.

Ingrid had also had another order ready for her—a seemingly endless stack of sweatpants. Living in a house filled with shifters required constant handing out of pants. Well that or having them walk around bare ass naked all the damn time. And while not necessarily a bad thing to see her mate's ass or cock, she didn't need to see the others. Although the shifters were used to it and there wasn't any damn shame in it of course. It was just an odd thing.

And sometimes the shifts happened away from the safety of the grounds where clothes were not handy to slip on to get home. Therefore, Dani had found the perfect solution. A nifty bit of magic to save the day.

She now wore a coin purse sized pouch attached to a belt which was hardly noticeable and not in the way at all. But inside that magic little pouch was enough shifter ass coverings to last a long time. She merely had to open the top of the pouch, reach in, and grab a pair.

Some parts of being a witch sucked—mostly, that would be the evil parts. But things like her magic pouch were pretty damn cool. She couldn't wait to show it off, and she'd most likely get the chance soon seeing as it was a full moon tomorrow night and her shifters would have to transform.

Dani let out a satisfied breath and sucked down another mouthful of maple awesomeness. She might have had a few errands to run, but it was also just an excuse to suck down her new favorite beverage. At some point soon, she'd have more maple in her veins than blood.

Sticking with the new routine, Derek stayed close behind Dani and let her set her own pace, but always with a watchful eye and keen sense of their immediate surroundings; his bear senses sought out danger lurking nearby. Dani was learning so much about shifters these last few months. Their sense of smell went so much further than just smelling plants, or food, or the normal things humans smelled. They could smell changes—like danger. If a predator was near. They claimed there was even a smell for magic.

Derek had volunteered to drive today, which Dani obliged simply so she could take in the island scenery and the fall foliage before the winds claimed the last of the leaves for the winter. It was a night away from Halloween and the entire town was decked out for the occasion.

Life on the island was slower this time of year with most tourists preferring to visit in spring and summer. Typically, this would mean the Halloween festivities were mainly for the locals, a celebration of another tourist season officially ending and the entrance into another long winter. However, this year was a special occasion. A Blue Moon on Halloween night—a rare spectacle that was drawing out full moon watchers as well as fans of the supernatural, who believed the night had special meaning.

Dani sure hoped it did not! They had enough troubles already.

But it just so happened that the island was a perfect location to see this special moon. Even the local boating tours had remained opened past the normal end of the season and had sold out tours for the occasion.

The fall colors on the island were in full bloom, about to past peak foliage any day now, leaving the trees bare and only the aged buildings to block the chilling ocean winds of winter. But even with the cloud cover today, it was a beautiful and peaceful sight.

Derek held open Dani's door for her and she thanked him with an embarrassed blush on her cheeks. She didn't like how posh and stuck up it looked of her, to be chauffeured everywhere around the island, but it wouldn't last forever. One of these days she was going to track down her vile excuse of an aunt and remove her from power once and for all. That was the only way she'd get her privacy back. Until that time, it was body guards where ever she ventured. And Galen wasn't able to be with her every hour of every day—he did have a job to do.

Problem? Derek asked when Dani stalled getting into the car.

Her shoulders stiffened but she didn't respond other than to twist around and peer down the sidewalk. Derek's frame went tense as he scoured the area and looked ready to pick Dani up and carry her over his shoulder to safety if it came to it. But Dani held up her hand for him to give her a minute when he went to ask again if there was a problem. His bear senses weren't picking up anything out of the ordinary.

    Dani blinked.

    Then blinked again.

She wasn't sure what to make of it—the street and sidewalk and buildings were shuttering in and out of her line of vision in black and white. One blink, in color—as much color as the cloudy gray day allowed. Another blink—it was like she'd stepped onto an old black and white movie set.

A few more blinks and it was all black and white, surrounding her on all sides, and she was quite suddenly no longer standing next to her car or Derek the wonder bear security guard.

What the hell new kind of crazy was this?

She heard what sounded like Derek speaking to her, but from a faraway distance considering he'd been inches from her and holding open her car door.

    Huh, weird. It's Halloween.

Except it wasn't, not until tomorrow night. But whatever she was seeing, the moon had risen, the air had cooled, and kids and adults alike were lining and crossing the streets in full costume and regalia.

Dani twisted around and around, daring to step a few feet down the sidewalk and when she looked down at herself and saw her bright red boots glaring in the black and white, it hit her what this had to be. A vision perhaps, of the past?

She'd done some research on Harper witchy gifts after her nightmare with Galen at the Opera House B&B a couple of weeks prior, and according to the Codhex, the gift of sight wasn't just restricted to the future, but also the past. And apparently, in black and white so she could tell the difference. Handy, actually. If that's what was really happening here.

But if so, why was this happening?

What was she meant to see?

It appeared to be a normal, fun Halloween night of kids trick or treating up and down the streets of Blueberry Island—from when though? What year was it? Dani glanced around and by the look of the cars parked, it was the 1960's, perhaps 1970's seeing as life on the island was always behind the times.

Heck, her mom and aunt would've been youngsters themselves. Teens.

And that's when a distant and despondent howl sent the busy town into a fast silence, hurriedly followed by murmurs and parents shuffling their younger children off in a hurry.

Dani noticed two teenage girls race out of a side street across the road, stopping, breathless, like they'd run a long distance. One of them pointed to the sky and Dani followed to see the full moon rising.

See! One of the teen girls was shouting. I was right. It's the Blue Moon, the second full moon of the month, and the first Blue Moon to land on Halloween night in almost fifty years.

    But, so what, Mona?

Marni! Don't you get it? It's the one night he's free. We can try to save him.

Oh my God, Dani mumbled to herself, taking a step closer. It was her mother and aunt as teenagers.

How can you be sure? And how do we free him? Marni planted her hands on her hips waiting impatiently for her sister to explain. Dani found herself smiling—she was such a Harper. So much like her aunt and mother.

A third younger girl arrived and both Mona and Marni accosted the girl.

    You shouldn't have followed, Meena.

You're too little. Go home. Mom and dad would be so angry if they found out you followed.

And they won't get mad at you? Meena aimed at the other two. I'm tired of having to stay home. I'm old enough. I won't get in the way, I promise.

You're going to have to stay now, Mona agreed in protest. We don't have time to make sure you get home safely.

I can look out for myself! Meena insisted, folding her arms in front of her.

You'd better, Marni warned. Because we won't be able to. We're dealing with a wolf tonight.

I want to help, Meena whined.

Fine. But keep up, Mona ordered as the three sisters raced off down the street... and Dani found herself back in full color with Derek the bear shifters hands on her shoulders, wearing a freaked out stare.

Jesus, Dani! You back with me? What the hell happened?

Dani glanced around. She was standing right next to her car door—she hadn’t moved at all.

How long was I—out? for lack of a complicated explanation.

About the longest ten seconds of my entire life. You just froze. Didn't even blink. You were right in front of me and yet a million miles away.

"I was far away. In the past I think." And she still wasn't sure why. But surprise, surprise, it sounded like another wolf problem. Just who was the wolf they were trying to save? Had they managed to do so?

    At least you're back now.

Yeah. Take me home now, please, Derek.

He was surprised by her sudden turn, the urgency obvious. And Dani wasn't sure what problem needed fixing yet, but one giant clue had made at least one point clear. Tomorrow night was Halloween. And a second full moon—a Blue Moon on Halloween night for the first time since Mona, Marni, and Meena had been teens themselves.

It also meant tonight was going to be another long one spent in research mode—good thing she'd dosed up on caffeinated mapleliciousness.

    CHAPTER 2

Deputy Dimples, otherwise known as Beau Benson, rubbed his bleary eyes and splashed some cool water on his face to try to wake himself. Between the all hours of the day and night get ready to fight Meena practice he was helping Dani Harper and Galen Wilde with these last few weeks, his shifts as deputy, and spending as many hours as possible with Sawyer—well, sleep was suddenly overrated and something he never had enough of.

However, it was worth every exhausted minute. Especially when his sexy wolf shifter slid up behind him and wrapped his arms around him planting a trail of kisses down the back of his neck. He was getting used to waking up with Sawyer—and enjoying the hell out of every minute they spent together.

Beau had crashed at the mansion last night—more like wee hours of the morning after a long night of mock battles and helping Dani with research in deciphering a vision she'd had the previous evening. He and Sawyer spent about half their nights here, and the other at Beau's. The only nights they spent apart now were full moon nights—the temptation to mate and give into the mating fog was proving too much and neither wanted to rush into it even though both of them were in this relationship hook, line, and sinker at this point.

And with every day that passed, Sawyer was getting more comfortable with public displays of affection—actually, he was getting too damn good at them and Beau was far too easily drawn in. Sawyer was getting better at controlling that addictive mating fog, but it didn't matter where they were or what company they were keeping, that fog made it like they were the only two men on the planet.

And today was Halloween, which meant another full moon and another persistent call for Sawyer to mate—something they kept telling themselves they were not ready for yet as they had promised to take things slow and get to know each other better, first.

Yes. They were attracted to each other—scratch that—neither imagined ever being attracted to another man like they were to each other. The mere idea seemed preposterous. And even though they spent most of their nights together these days, Sawyer was still a virgin. They hadn't gone all the way yet. They'd done just about everything else under the sun, but Sawyer was afraid if he gave in to making love with Beau he'd become lost in the need to mate.

Although if Beau had to wager, he'd put money on the fact that Sawyer was nervous as hell—heck, he was too. He'd never had such intense feelings for someone so fast. It was head-spinning. In a sexy, hazy, utterly dazzling sort of way. So, taking it slow was a good idea for both of them.

Morning. Sawyer nibbled at his ear.

Morning, Beau smiled back with a shudder down his spine Sawyer was close enough to feel. He could stand here all day and stare at the two of them skin on skin in the bathroom mirror, but his work day as deputy was starting soon.

Do you really have to go to work today? Sawyer almost whined. He'd have preferred to crawl back under the sheets with his favorite deputy.

Unfortunately, I do, Beau accidentally yawned his reply.

Sawyer's eyes pinched inward at once. You didn't get enough sleep.

Lately, never. But it's worth it.

I'll make you a deal, prompted Sawyer, turning on the shower. Which ever bed we end up in tonight, we actually just sleep. No hanky panky. But the grin on Sawyer's face claimed—well, I'll try anyway.

How about, early hanky panky, then sleep? Beau replied with a laugh because there was no way in hell to get naked under the sheets with the shifter and not fool around.

I can amend my plan, Sawyer agreed hungrily, wishing it was the end of the day already. But his shoulders slumped as he remembered what day it was.

Full moon tonight, reminded Beau. Which meant a night spent apart so as not to give into the temptation to mate.

Sawyer opened his mouth to say something but lost the nerve. Beau twisted around in all his naked gloriousness and the shifter had to seal
