Chronicles of Bathrex is a written work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents either are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.

    Concerning retcons

The monster has an official name. At the time of writing this book I did not have an official name for it. So, I kept switching from two different names and Bathrex voice description was another thing that bothered me. Including a couple minor continuity adjustments, For book one those are the official retcons that I have made. No further adjustments will be made going forward.

For my parents, I could not ask for better in this life.

    Chapter 1

He wiped the sweat from his brow with a cloth soaked in a bowl of ice water. The cool icy feel was refreshing from the hot summer day. The Grand Ranger sat behind his wooden desk. He had short, white hair and brown eyes with a finely groomed beard braided with golden wire. In his left ear was a silver ring and his doublet was thick leather wrapped with two red strips of fabric. Around his shoulders was a dark green cloak. As commander of the Rangers of Vellum, his temporary office in Nirasel was filled with maps of the region and books on innumerable topics. On his desk were several letters relating to multiple incidents regarding a Ranger who vexed him greatly on a daily basis. Beneath those were complaints about another individual who was equally troublesome. Bathrex and Amethyst, he thought, of all the people he was cursed to deal with, why them? To top it off, he had a messenger present from the capital itself. The messenger sat across from him and wore green and gold plated armor that glistened in the light. On his chest plate was the Emblem of Vellum: a Crescent Lunar tree with a bow carved in the middle of its bark. You rode a long way from the capital. I will ensure you are well taken care of, sir. My apologies, I do not know your name.

My name is not important, Grand Ranger. I’m just a soldier in his prince’s army, but my orders are important. A message from the prince himself.

The Grand Ranger took the rolled up parchment and saw the royal emblem in red wax, unbroken.

The prince is concerned with these two. Amethyst has increased the cost of maintenance from her constant failings and spell mishaps. The forest has even come to be harmed along with both Caretakers and her fellow Sprites. He need not express to you how important they are to us as a society.

Yes I am aware of both the Lunar Sprites’ importance and Amethyst’s failings.

The prince thinks otherwise. Equally, Bathrex has cost the crown quite a bit of gold. His actions and disregard of our laws will no longer be tolerated. Nor will your inability to act upon these two. The letter from his grace contains further instructions. Good day Grand Ranger, sir. With that, the knight stood up and walked out of the office, the Grand Ranger broke the seal and began to read the letter.

"Dear Grand Ranger, the latest conduct of both Ranger Bathrex and Lunar Sprite Amethyst have yet again cost the royal treasury a large amount. This is becoming a burden upon the crown, one that will no longer be bore. Your failure to act upon them is also troubling. Bathrex has caused the deaths of innocent lives and destruction of property in addition to many other grievous acts. Amethyst, while she has yet to cause a single death, has been the subject of a few troubling incidents involving accidental injury. This has been going on for almost an entire year and will no longer be tolerated. Either deal with the current situation or I will find someone that will and have you held accountable and replaced. You hereby have my written consent to deal with this matter in any way you deem fit, even at the cost of their lives, if so needed. I would prefer a mission away from towns or cities if done so. I am giving you this only chance to deal with this, there will not be a second. Fix this now!

    Sincerely The Prince of Vellum."

His eyes widened, and he felt his anger boil inside him as his job and title were being placed on the line. He would not be held accountable for their failings, for their stupidity, he had to deal with it. But how? He thought. Then, as he glanced over the pages on his desk, he saw another letter from the town of Durnok about a dangerous hunt and the many deaths that surrounded it. A big grin crept across his face as his prayers were finally answered. After all, the Prince himself gave him consent to deal with the matter free of consequence. He would give them a suicide mission and be rid of them forever, then deal with the hunt himself. With the letter from the Prince, no one would question him or be able to hold him
