    Discovery - Bob Haider

My grateful acknowledgement is extended to my dear friend Ben Cusomato for his inspiration and contributions to this piece.

    Prologue

Abasi Mubarak slammed on his brakes kicking up dust and sand as his automobile came to a skidding halt near the Pyramid of Djoser.  The pyramid, built in the 27 th century BC, is named after the Egyptian pharaoh of the 3 rd Dynasty and is often referred to simply as the Step Pyramid.

After receiving an urgent phone call from an archaeologist at the site, Abasi arrived in less than an hour from Cairo via Ring Road.  He immediately approached Gamila Vlasak who stood bewildered before the pyramid.

What is of such urgency that you’ve requested someone immediately from the Interior Ministry?

Gamila shook her head in disbelief, barely able to muster the words.  I’ve never encountered anything like it.  To attempt to describe what is occurring is beyond me.

    Show me, said Abasi.

Gamila led the representative from the Interior Ministry around the side of the Step Pyramid to the spectacle taking place.

Abasi Mubarak’s eyes immediately widened in awe and wonder as he stood in silence viewing the strange phenomenon.

Gamila glanced at Abasi, and stated, When I look at this, I want to say it defies the laws of physics.  I’m an archaeologist.  Physics is not my area of expertise.

Abasi was at a loss as to what he was seeing, and he could barely ask the one-word question, Physics?

Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of light, atoms, matter and energy, Gamila stated.

And what we see here would fall into that classification?

Yes, Gamila answered without hesitation, and an archaeologist such as myself is of no use.  You need one or more of the best physicists on the globe to examine this.

Abasi shrugged, I don’t know who might be the..., he began, as his voice trailed off.

The University of Cairo could no doubt recommend someone, if not one of their physicists, Gamila suggested.

    Wait! Abasi shouted.

What?  You know of an expert in that field?

No, but I know of someone who does.

    Chapter 1

Ben and Bob sat at an outside table at the News Café in Miami’s South Beach.  The mid-morning sunshine bounced off the waters of the Atlantic in numberless tiny sparkles as if the ocean reflected their contented mood.

Bob, with wide-eyed admiration, watched beautifully attired females walk past their sidewalk table, portfolios in hand, as they headed for an interview and a possible picture shoot.

Miami is the model capital of the world, Bob commented.

Ben peaked from behind an engrossing article in the Wall Street Journal and paying his usual attention to what Bob was saying, asked, What was that you said?

Bob shook his head, and commented, Nothing, as he took a sip of his coffee and returned to working on his word puzzle.

Having successfully concluded their previous case, the duo had several hours before their flights and they preferred to spend their time relaxing at an outside table
