About this ebook

Kind-hearted redhead Cindi has a lot on her mind: Gran, college exams, bills, and what to wear at the Valentine’s Day student ball. She needs a Cinderella dress, glittery shoes, and a girlfriend to cuddle up with. What a pity fairy tales are only for kids. Aren’t they? All is not lost. It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and the sweetest magic is in the air ... Cindi takes a tumble while mopping the floor and bangs her head. She opens her dizzy eyes to the gift of one magical wish. What will it be?

Tara, the climber. Childhood friend and daughter of Cindi’s employers. Wealthy, lithe, sexy, and thoughtful. Tara’s wish? To climb Mount Everest and to spend time with gorgeous Cindi. She’d love to take her best friend on a date to the college ball -- and then go all the way from blushing student to confident girlfriend, from shy Cinderella to dancing queen. Pumpkin to ... moped.

When two wishes collide, a spark is ignited, powerful enough to tickle anyone’s peak. When everything is laid bare, only one sparkling question remains: Will Miss Havisham say yes?

    Chapter 1

Four weeks before Valentine’s Day, the town center had been transformed from gray wilderness into sparkling paradise. The air crackled with frost, and evening arrived before afternoon had finished. Romantic goods and magical ornaments flashed enticingly in shop windows. Shoppers busied and chatted, while the town lights stretched into a darkening sky.

Student Cindi Miller thoughtfully made her way through the crowds toward the activity center, where she worked as a cleaner. She was worried about her essay, due Monday, and whether or not she’d left Gran’s tablets on the peacock saucer by her bed.

‘Course I did, she said worriedly. Didn’t I?

It took seconds to text Gran. When the reply came, Cindi was so relieved she laughed out loud. Thank goodness.

She tapped out some kisses and continued on her way.

    XXX. Love u!

As sole carer, it was her responsibility to make sure Gran had the right medications at hand, as well as being fed, washed, and looked after. Since Cindi’s sister, Kylie, had left for college, things had been tough.

Cindi didn’t mind. Far from it. She loved Gran with all her heart and always looked forward to getting home. Iris from down the road visited Fridays with juicy, much-needed gossip. A cuppa and a chinwag were the highlight of everyone’s week.

At the end of a full week of lectures, the last thing Cindi wanted was to clean the activity center. Friday seemed the longest day of the week.

She didn’t have a choice. Finances were tight, like always. Bills needed to be paid. With heating costs rocketing and mid-term break around the corner, she’d probably have to grab extra shifts. Nothing to be done. Gran’s motto was: never fight when you can do a runner. By and by, Cindi agreed. Cheerful and positive, she didn’t let anything, or anyone, get her down for long.

With only minutes to spare before her shift began, Cindi picked up her pace and tried to walk faster without huffing and puffing. Her bag was full of uni books, and she wasn’t particularly fit. When a shout came from behind, she gratefully stopped and turned to see who had called.

    Cind! Wait up?

It was Tara, daughter of the owners of the activity center, waving enthusiastically, with shining eyes that reached Cindi deep inside and pushed her blush button.

Tara put on a spurt and sprinted, a glorious image of long limbs and gracefulness. Cindi’s secret name for her was Tarantula. Her sister’s was Lara-Tara Croft. When scaling the indoor climbing wall, her friend bore an excellent resemblance to the sexy spider woman from Cindi’s teenage fantasies. Fit, strong, and speedy. La grr.

Tara stopped right in front and did a few dramatic star jumps, her muscled thighs flexing and strong arms pumping the air. Bindiii…

The show was more spectacular than the northern lights.

Cindi blinked rapidly, sucked her own stomach in, and tried to wave without wobbling. Hi!

She’d never understood why Tara was so sweet to her when she could take her pick of who to be friends with. Even back at school. Once older sister Kylie had left, Cindi kept to herself. It was the best way to avoid bullies. Tara, who’d seemed not to know about social hierarchies and cliques, regularly sought and found her, hiding behind the stairs at lunchtime or huddled in the bathroom.

Together, they’d giggled about songs and films. It turned out they both liked girls. Together, they’d completed application letters for the local uni.

It was Tara who’d told her about the cleaning job and offered advice about what to say at the interview. Since the very first shift, Tarantula Croft had taken the time to show Cindi round and made sure she was okay. While the other staff treated her as
