    Pirate Attack

Out on the high seas of the Sirhiryn. The sailing vessel surfed along at a pace that even a Liryn stallion could not match.

Sailors did their jobs on deck, and below deck. The crew milled about making sure everything was in order.

It was a sunny day with dark clouds off in the distance. If the winds stayed on course, then the coming storm would be avoided.

A lone figure lounged against the rail. He looked out to the horizon. A soft delicate hand rested on his shoulder. He turned and smiled. The young girl that stood before him was his sister, princess Alorra. She was dressed in a silk gown with a veil covering her face. Her dark hair was tied back in a weave-like braid. Gold and jewels weaved all through her hair. Bracelets adorned her arms. He looked into her dark eyes and knew she was happy to be on this voyage. Therefore, he was happy also.

They were on their way to the kingdom of Kalladron. The princess was to marry crowned prince Kaliq. The crowned prince was a childhood friend of theirs. They traveled back and forth between the kingdoms. The Sultans of each kingdom had made an alliance during their grandparent’s time. At one point these two fine kingdoms were at odds with each other. They had never gone to war, but there were minor skirmishes that almost led to all out war.

Prince Sarhkan looked forward to seeing his friend. As children they were inseparable and troublesome. Kaliq is calm and thinks things through before he likes to act. He will be a great tactician if he ever leads his armies to war.

Sarhkan, on the other hand was impulsive and rash at times. He was a wild card, unpredictable. He always wanted to explore and venture out in the world, which led to him getting into trouble most of the time.

He gazed at his sister and lavished in the memories of the past. There were times she would sneak out with him and Kaliq. The mischief they used to cause when they were children.

Alorra looked at her brother and smiled. She was happy to be on this voyage. Sarhkan was happy for his little sister and his best friend.

Are you sure you want this, sister? Sarhkan asked. He was concerned that her heart was not in it. That, maybe she had changed her mind. She seemed out of sorts lately. Always looking off into the sea from the balcony of her bedchambers.

Oh course, brother. You know very well how long I have been in love with Kaliq. I was jealous that he spent most of his time getting into trouble on your behalf, she replied with raised slim eyebrows. Her silk sheer gown did little to cover her lithe nutmeg body. The veil she wore covered her face so that no one could lay eyes on the princess. He just wished the women of his nation did not have to wear the veil. To him women should reveal their beauty for all the world to see.

What of you, brother! When do you plan on having a bride? she asked slyly. He knew she smiled mischievously under her veil. She was a witty woman. When Kaliq became Sultan one day, Alorra would be a great Sultana. She had a mind and eye for reading people. Not much got past her perception.

Perhaps, one day. The woman of my dreams is out there somewhere, Sarhkan sighed. He was in no rush to marry right now. There was so much exploring and adventuring to do. Besides, their father was still a young man. He was still in his early forties. He had a long rule ahead of him. If Sarhkan could, he would just let his sister rule the kingdom. He really had no interest in becoming Sultan.

    His sister began to giggle.

Oh, brother. You are such a day dreamer. I understand you care little about the affairs of state, but you do have a responsibility as prince to be groomed as a Sultan one day. You are of age to start being by father’s side, she stressed gently and gripped his hand in hers.

Sarhkan frowned. What he would do just to be a child once again with his sister and the friends they had made.

I just need a little more time. I am not ready for such things yet, Sarhkan said and gazed out upon the horizon waters.

Milord! the captain spoke to the prince. There is a ship heading our way bearing the black flag with the bloodied skull.

Are you sure? Sarhkan asked on edge. The captain nodded.

Prepare the men for battle. We will do our best to outrun the pirates, Sarhkan ordered. The captain left. Sarhkan turned to his sister and gave her a wavy bladed dagger with a needle-sharp point.

Do not let anyone take you! he stated. Alorra nodded and left to go below deck with her ladies in waiting. They would not be taken alive.

Sarhkan unsheathed his sabre. It was a curved blade. Strong and light. He joined the rest of the crew and watched as the pirate vessel gained on them.

At this rate they would be caught and forced to fight. The pirate vessel was larger and faster. They would be outnumbered two to one.

Captain! What if we steered toward the storm? Sarhkan asked quickly.

The most idiotic idea I have ever heard, but it may work, the captain replied. I will handle the ship. You handle your troops, Milord.

    Sarhkan went with his
