Book endorsement for Manuel Howard
In the last twenty five- thirty years a major emphasis and movement has been initiated to get more men involved in the church and to serve as role models for our youth, particularly young black males.
Here is a book that speaks to some of the present-day issues on the absence of black male leadership in the church and a call for action. To illuminate this ever evolving problem and tremendous need to address the issue, Dr. Manuel Howard draws upon an extensive study and scholarship to provide tools for clergy, the church and community to come together and do something about it.
Dr. Manuel Howard’s book, Transforming Male leaders in the 21st Century
is a compelling, informative, and inspirational masterpiece. It is sociological, in that it addresses how to enter actively engage men in the church, but it is also theological, because many of the core principles and theoretical foundations are biblically based.
Words of commendation are due to Dr. Howard for his insights and this timely publication. Even more, I congratulate him for being genuinely committed to the church and its historic contributions to culture and community, at the same time I commend him for his courage in challenging the church to embrace an immediate need to teach and prepare black men for leadership and ministry.
Bishop Gregory G.M. Ingram
118th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church
Presiding Prelate of the 1st Episcopal District
Transformational Church Leadership is grounded in the one’s ability to help followers find their calling in life and then to find a place in the church to fulfill that calling. To do so, a transformational leader must have a sense of his or her own calling and the ability to mentor constituents into mastering their own mission in life. In Transforming Male Leaders in the 21st Century, Howard has reconciled his own calling and developed a method whereby he can mentor others into their odyssey in life. This book provides a blueprint for preparing men and women to live out their calling by performing a task in the leadership of the church. The focus of the book is on male leadership, however, the principles taught are not confined to gender. Both male and female will benefit from this training.
I highly recommend this book as required reading for anyone in a leadership position in the church in general and the black church in particular.

Reverend Dr. Manuel Howard’s book Transforming Male Leaders in the 21st Century
helps the black church meet the challenging demands of transforming male leaders for ministry. Howard’s groundbreaking work is a clarion call which details how to transform males into effective church leaders so that they can foster the transforming agency of church members in an ever-evolving, global society. Howard acknowledges that many black churches are not equipped to do the work necessary to realize their mission of salvation and liberation. Therefore, he takes a critical conscious approach to developing male leadership in what he designates as the technologically driven church. To address this problem, Howard performed field work among males in a black congregation from a theoretical, methodological, and practical perspective. His work provides insight from an author who has engaged in scholarly research on the written and living texts of black ecclesial formations and prescribes a plan for implementing salvation and liberation.

I have known Dr. Howard since he was a foster care kid attending a church, I pastored along with his foster care family. Even then he showed leadership ability as it related to the other kids. He was a star football player on his high school football team and the other kids his age seemed to listen to him. Today through education and hard work he has transformed the men in the church he pastors to committed disciples of Christ. I know this book will transform many lives.
