    Chapter 1

    fade in

int. in lsu classroom – day

(The classroom is large, set up in a bleacher-type setting. Prof. Ball is against the wall by the chalkboard. The class has sixty (60) students of young men and women and a few older people going back to get their degree. Some students are chewing gum and passing notes. A couple are flying paper airplanes. Some of the pretty girls are sitting in the front row, near the professor. Some of the boys in the back throw the girls notes to get their attention. Prof. Ball, who is also one of the Magi character actors, stands by the chalkboard and addresses the disorderly class.)

    prof. ball

(Bangs a long ruler against the chalkboard and talks loud in a firm voice)

Attention, class, attention! Please contain yourselves and act like adults, ladies and gentlemen. I know it may be difficult for some of you, but I know it is within your power to control yourselves and stop acting like two-year-olds.

(Pauses and clears his throat out loud)

Now, class, this course is College History 101, and today we will discuss the time of the coming of Christ. Why, you may ask? Well, the reason is because it is the time that changed the whole world on all calendars and historical studies.

Now I want you to take notes. A word we will get familiar with is Magi. Merriam-Webster’s definition is that of magus or more toward magic. Definition 1. a. says, a member of a hereditary priestly class among the ancient Medes and Persians, while 1. b. says, one of the traditionally three wise men from the east paying homage to the infant Jesus. Definition 2 says magician or sorcerer.

Ladies and gentlemen, today you will learn who these men were and their historical significance.

ext. outside the classroom, into the city – day

(Visual sites slowly going out of the classroom viewing the city from up high, and vision of a window appears into a middle school classroom.)

int. inside a middle school classroom – day

(Around the wall are paintings and works that the children did. Also, there are pictures on the wall of the Founding Fathers. All the children are sitting in desks, except the one in the front of the class named Kenny. He’s standing up in front of the class about to give a speech on historical figures called the Magi. He is dressed in a colorful outfit like the ancient Magi with a robe or cape and a hat that match the outfit. The teacher has his written report in her hand because he has to report what he knows about the said historical figures by memory. All the other children are dressed in their costumes, in total silence, looking at Kenny, engrossed but petrified because the same fate awaits them next. Also, some parents are in the class walking around with cameras and iPhones and shooting pictures and videos of the children in their costumes. Kenny is standing there in front of the class, shy and blushing and not saying anything.)

    mrs. robbie

Kenny, tell the class what historical figure your report is on today!

    kenny

(Twiddling his fingers and shrugging his shoulders as if he really isn’t sure)

Um, hi. My name is Kenny and I’m a Magi.

(Pauses and stares at his classmates overwhelmed)

    mrs. robbie

So, Kenny, what did the Magi do that makes them significant in history?

    kenny

    Um, they did magic.

    mrs. robbie

Kenny, is there anything else you want to tell us about the Magi?

    kenny

    Nooooooo.

(Looks very shy, thinks, and a thought pops into his head)

Oh, I know what they did! They came to worship Baby Jesus and brought him gifts and stuff.

    mrs. robbie

Great, Kenny! You remembered! Okay, class, let’s give Kenny a big hand for that presentation.

(The whole class claps for Kenny, and he smiles and blushes in front of the class.)

ext. in the land of cush – day

    narrator

Long ago, in the land of Cush, around 1 BC, the great, mighty, and powerful Balthazar was having nightmares. In his dreams, there was someone more powerful than him, more skilled in magic. The new wizard came and trapped him in a pit, and he was showing off with many lights to the people all over the world to the point that no one knew the great Balthazar anymore. This troubled the greatest magic man who ever lived. After Balthazar had woken up from so many nightmares, he took it as the truth. So he threw a feast for all the greatest Magi and wizards in the land to inquire and see who this imposter might be.

    balthazar

(Thinking) Could this insolent fool really stage me up? If he could really beat me in a contest of magic, then what would happen? Hmmm . . . Maybe if I lost, then I could learn from him in secret and become his student.

    int. balthazar’s castle – night

    narrator

This started to worry Balthazar, and his mind was troubled so greatly that fear set in.

    balthazar

(Having another nightmare, running, and sweating)

Wow, my lord! I marvel at your lights, but now I have to run because your magic is too strong. Please, please, please don’t destroy me, my lord! Have mercy on me, and I will be your servant forever because no man can withstand the test of your fire and lights!

(Screaming) Aaaawww! Ooohhh! Help! Help! Somebody, help me please!

    narrator

Balthazar’s wife walks in during his nightmare, bringing water.

int. balthazar’s bed chamber – morning

    lady median

(Laughing) Hahaha! Hee, hee! Could it be the great and mighty Balthazar in here crying like a baby? What a shame! One would think you were a child. Only a baby cries the way you were crying.

(Balthazar is waking up while Lady Median is talking to him. He’s in cold sweats.)

    lady median

Come wash up. Let Mama fix it for the poor baby.

(She kisses Balthazar. He is in cold sweats. This time he’s embarrassed and confused, so he keeps his mouth shut. Lady Median gives her husband a massage, but his eyes were glazed over and full of fear. Then he starts to relax from the massage. Balthazar slowly falls asleep, and a great peace comes over him. He starts to dream and sees a plane white as snow. The ground and the trees have white flowers everywhere. Then a man comes to him out of the heavens.)

ext. in the white forest – day

    jesus

Balthazar, my child, I am the one that you seek. Don’t let your heart be troubled. I am the Son of Man, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. My time is near, my son, and I will wash away the sins of the whole world. And you will carry my message for me.

    int. balthazar’s castle – day

(Balthazar wakes up, and immediately he knows that the rumors that the soothsayers and pagans had been saying about the king of the Jews are true. Balthazar gets dressed because he had summoned the Magi for the festival in the test of magic.)

int. inside the competition tent – day

(A large tent sits on a field, some distance from the castle. It’s surrounded by smaller tents, where many people are camping to view the competitions and make a name for themselves. Inside the tent are many people sitting in wooden bleachers. The tent is large—the size of a modern circus tent. People, local and foreign, are packed to the rafters waiting to see the contest of magic. The master of the ceremony walks into the center of the ring, which is covered by dirt. He picks up the bullhorn and speaks loudly to the whole crowd.)

    master of the ceremony

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the contest of magic! You will see things that are mind-boggling. You will see things that defy logic and all reasoning! You will see mortal humans wield the power of the gods!

(Balthazar and his opponent Man-Zulu, the voodoo priest, come out in their respective corners and prepare for their match.)

    master of the ceremony

Ladies and gentlemen, in this corner, you have the King of all Cush, the land that stretches from Arabia to Ethiopia. And in this corner, you have Man-Zulu, the voodoo priest from the bowels of Deep South Africa. So without further ado, let’s get ready to rumble in the contest of magic!

    narrator

The contest between Balthazar and the African voodoo priest starts, and they both
