About this ebook

At last, Yvette was finally free of Bertha Mae’s Ghost/haint. Thankfully, she didn’t remember much of what had occurred during those horrific periods of being pummeled near to death, the nightmares, foul language, and smells of her mother. The fear of losing her mind, the quick desire to give up. Nor did she recall the ceremony that she had performed to send her mother to her grave.

What she did recall was sending the man that she adored away, causing her extreme grief. Yet, there had been a plan unforeseen by her that they would come together again. However, she needed time to be free. Free from her mother’s hate in life and death, after more than twenty-nine years. Free to sleep, dream, but most of all, she needed to find out who the real Yvette Marie Hardin was.

The questions lingers. What would her freedom bring her, and what remained waiting for her?

The Ghost of Bertha Mae Book III - Carolyn Virginia Parnell

    Chapter 1

Yvette’s plane landed in Chicago, at O’Hara Airport, at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday afternoon. David was anxiously waiting for her at her gate.

She stepped from the airplane, gliding as if she were a model, walking on a runway. When David saw her coming toward him, his heart lurched, desiring to run to her.

She was beautiful, a goddess. Her golden waved mane, flowing off her shoulders and behind her back. She was wearing a belted animal-print jumpsuit with a wide black belt. She wore three-inch black-anklet sandal heels, carrying a matching pocketbook and an overnight bag on her shoulder.

Before she reached David, she saw him and began smiling.

No longer able to wait, he practically ran to her, his smile gleaming, his light-brown intriguing eyes overflowing with love. When he reached her, he embraced her, loving her sweet scent. Baby, it’s so good seeing you. You look fantastically stunning. I’ve missed you. Everything about you, he whispered, wanting to take her in his arms and kiss her. He recalled the only other time that he had met her at this airport was when they weren’t together, yet his parents had insisted on seeing her. His heart swelled knowing that this time she was his. Almost.

Hi, honey. I’ve missed you badly. It’s great seeing you. She gazed up at him, her eyes filled with love.

I love you, Vette. How was your flight? he asked, taking her overnight bag, slinging it over his shoulder. Then catching her hand in his, they strolled to the baggage claim area.

It was fine. I thought about you from the moment I sat down until the plane landed. Hum. It feels so good being with you, David, she said softly, gazing at him.

I feel the same way. My heart is singing. I love that you thought about me for five hours. All good, right?

Nothing but good, baby, she said, smiling, her eyes shining brightly.

"I took off work today and tomorrow. That will allow a little time to try and relax because tomorrow, we’ll be quite busy. After taking photos, we have about four hours before we’re to be at Mom and Dad’s for dinner. Susan, John, and their spouses will be there. My brother Sean, who’s single and lives in New York, won’t be there, but he sends his congratulations and well-wishes. You’ll see more of him as our wedding day draws near.

Saturday, Jon, Josh, and their spouses are eager to see you. That’s not going to leave a lot of time for us. Yet I’m hoping we can have some private time, he whispered in her ear, his hot breath causing stirrings in her.

I’m sure we’ll find some time to spend alone, honey. Just being with you now is wonderful, she said, a mischievous smile touching her face.

I love you so much. You know how to get to me, he said as they entered the baggage claim area.

Within fifteen minutes, Yvette’s luggage arrived. Two suitcases. David smiled, shaking his head.

What are you grinning about, honey?

Baby, you’re only staying a few days, he said, removing her luggage from the belt.

Honey, I’m a woman. I need a lot of things that men don’t. Besides, I didn’t know exactly what I needed for our pictures. They’re not too heavy for you, are they? she teased.

David chuckled. You just wait until I get you alone. Right now, I’m helpless, so you raze me.

Now, honey, you know I never do that to you. I’m just teasing you. You’re my strong and handsome man. I adore you.

Too late to try and be nice, lovely lady. You’re all mine later. He said as the doors opened, allowing them to enter the elevator.

Okay, honey. I give. She smiled, loving every minute of playing around with him.

On the drive to David’s home, Yvette dozed. David glanced at her several times, smiling because she always looked like a beautiful angel when sleeping. His angel, a precious gift from above.

When David drove into his garage, Yvette opened her eyes.

We’re here, baby. Welcome to Chicago and my home.

Yvette stretched, placing both arms out in front of her, then behind her head. She sighed slightly, covering her mouth, gazing at David. "Thanks, honey. I guess I should have slept on the plane.

I’ll get you inside. Once you get settled, you should take a nap. Is that okay with you, Vette?

She shook her head, stifling another yawn.

David understood that she had jet lag due to the time change and most likely had stayed up late, packing. He moved from the vehicle, going around to the passenger side, opening the door for Yvette, assisting her from the car.

Thanks, honey, she managed, covering her mouth, yawning again.

David lifted her in his arms, carrying her inside of the house, upstairs to his bedroom, laying her on his bed. He removed her shoes and her belt to allow her to rest comfortably. In minutes, she was asleep. He gazed at her, smiling, then turned, going back to the car to retrieve her bags.

Yvette slept for three hours. During that time, David placed her luggage in his room, near the closet, prepared dinner, took a shower in his guest bathroom, and studied one of his medical journals while sitting in his study.

He knew Yvette was awake when he heard the shower going a few doors from his study. Even though he was anxious to be with her, he decided to wait until she called him.

Half an hour later, he was just moving from behind his desk when he heard her call out to him.

David, honey. Where are you? she asked softly. She was wearing a yellow blouse and jeans with a matching belt and blue flats. Her hair hung in damp ringlets. She wore no makeup.

He entered the hall, seeing her, and grinned.

She beamed, her eyes glowing as she walked to him, her arms outstretched.

He gathered her in his strong arms, hugging then kissing her several times before releasing her. Hi, Vette. You look and smell lovely. Did you sleep well?

Hi, honey. Yes, I did. Thanks for taking care of me. I didn’t get in bed until last night, knowing that I had to leave this morning. You’re so sweet to me. She looked around her for a few seconds, then back at David.

Honey, you have a nice place and very tastefully decorated. Your bed is very comfortable and smells so good. A handsome man with great taste, can cook, grocery-shop, wash, clean… I’m getting a live-in maid as well as a husband. How lucky can a girl be, she said, looking serious, trying hard not to smile.

Come here, foxy lady, he said, placing his arms around her waist, pulling her close. You’re just full of mischief, aren’t you. I’ve missed you so much. I told you I would get you back, but not yet. Are you hungry? I cooked.

Yes, I’m famished. See, I knew I was getting at least a cook. She laughed as David held her hand, walking down the stairs and into the kitchen.

He took her in his arms, gazing into her beautiful eyes, desiring her greatly. Baby, you make me so happy. You’re full of antics. I love you, Vette. You make my life so sweet.

Not waiting for a response, he released her. Come, let me give you some food, he said, helping her sit. Then he prepared her plate: Sautéed chicken breast, squash, and garden salad. He placed the meal before her. I hope this is all right with you, baby. If not, I can make you an omelet or something else.

Honey, this is perfect. And I know it’s good because you’re a great cook. Thank you. I’ll wait for you.

Within a few minutes, he poured them wine and sat next to her with his plate. They held hands, saying grace.

While they ate, there was little conversation. David knew that Yvette was all right because she kept gazing at him, smiling.

When they finished dinner, she complimented him, and together they cleaned the kitchen.

Afterward, they walked from the kitchen holding hands, carrying their wine into the sitting room.

Yvette curled up on the sofa next to David, sipping her wine. Honey, thank you for pampering me. I feel so much better after resting and eating your wonderful meal. It feels delightful sitting next to you. So peaceful. Umm, she said, caressing his face, running her hands through his hair. You smell so, so good, my man.

David loved the touch of her smooth hand on his face and the way she played in his hair. That and her being so close to him, as well as her alluring scent was causing him to fight the urge to make love to her. He didn’t know how long he could control his urge. She smelled so good and talked so sweet; he couldn’t help but want her. Baby, I hope you know what you’re doing to me. You know how you affect me, Vette, he whispered.

I do remember you promising that you would get me back for being naughty at the airport and not too long ago. What were your plans, my sweet, handsome man?

David set his wine goblet on the table then took hers, placing it on the table. He turned to her, grinning. Oh, you remembered my promise. I had no plans as such. He paused, then moved closer to her. I just want to love you as much as I can when you’re ready, baby, he said huskily.

She gazed into his intriguing, light-brown eyes, seeing his love for her pouring from them. She closed her eyes, reopening them, giving him her answer.

David gathered her close, kissing her tenderly. She returned his kisses with sweet pleasure, placing her arms around him.

David moved her onto his lap and began caressing her while continuing to kiss her, each touch of her sweet mouth causing his heart to beat faster. He paused, peering into her eyes. I love you, Vette. You’re my joy. Then he stood with her in his arms, standing her on the floor, taking her in his arms, slowly moving her, as if they were dancing.

Baby, you feel so good. So good. I don’t know how I ever lived without you in my life every day. Before she could answer, he covered her mouth once more, gathering her into his arms, caressing her tenderly, filling her with desire.

I need to love you, Vette.

Yes, she uttered, holding on to him.

David scooped her into his strong arms, carrying her upstairs into his bedroom. He laid her gently on the bed, lying next to her, kissing her face, neck, and shoulders, threading his hand through her hair.

He paused, helping her remove her clothes, then his. He laid her on her back, taking her in his arms, capturing her mouth in his, tasting her sweetness, slightly groaning blissfully.

Yvette clutched him, sighing softly with pleasure. Stroking his shoulders, back, running her hands through his hair, and holding him tightly when he kissed her over, and over, and over until they nearly passed out from pleasure.

Baby, I love the way you hold me, kiss me, love me. You’re so sweet… He captured her nipple in his mouth, kissing her breasts, causing her to whimper, moving beneath him. He moved downward, kissing her stomach until he reached her private parts, then slowly moved back, touching her lips gently with his while caressing her.

Oh, baby… Yvette moaned slightly, flinging her head as pleasure flowed through her body, screaming to be fulfilled with David’s love.

Vette, I love you. All I want you to do is love me forever and a day. Baby, you feel so good and taste so sweet. May I love you now? he asked, his voice filled with need.

    Yes, honey, love me…

As David entered her, Yvette bit her lip to keep from screaming with pleasure. She held on to him, matching his movements, each one causing her to whimper as her body filled with euphoria.

David kissed her until she was breathless, whispering his love for her in her ear. Baby, you’re making me feel so good. I never want to stop loving you. I love you and always want to love you. You bring me such joy. He kissed her again as their movements became faster, faster, and faster, taking them to a world that filled them with explosive bliss.

Oh, baby, I need you to meet me…

Oh…my darling… Ohhhh, David. Sooo good… she murmured, holding him tightly as she began to climax.

Blissfully spent, they kissed, embraced, and lay in each other’s loving arms.

Baby, you were wonderful. Thanks for giving me all your delightful love. You fulfill my every desire and need. I love you, Vette, my angel. My lover. My lady. My future wife. I’m a happy and blessed man. So happy, baby.

Honey, I love the way you love me. I don’t know if it can get any better. If so, I don’t know how I’ll stand it. I’ll always give you all my love. I adore you, David, she whispered.

I don’t know about getting any better, baby. I have so much love to give you after we’re married. I promise to always make you happy. He kissed her forehead, and they lay in each other’s arms, wondering how they could be so blessed to have each other.

    Chapter 2

Yvette and David arrived at his parents’ home several hours before their appointment to have their pictures taken because his parents had insisted that they see Yvette.

David escorted her to the door and unlocked it. Then taking Yvette’s hand in his, he entered the foyer.

His mother, hearing them enter, rushed to greet them. Seeing Yvette, she grabbed her chest, her eyes widening, a huge smile covering her face. She walked up to Yvette, embracing and holding her for a while. When she released her, there were tears in her eyes.

She took Yvette’s hand in hers, staring at her. "My darling girl! If you aren’t the most stunning young lady that I’ve ever seen, and believe me, I’ve seen numerous beautiful ladies in my time. Welcome back home, my child. We’ve missed you, and our hearts are filled with joy that you and David are together again and engaged!

The dress you’re wearing is perfect for yours and David’s engagement picture. Yvette’s attire included a royal-blue, charmeuse-satin, A-line princess long-sleeved, V-neck, knee-length dress, with a fitted crisscross tuxedo waist. Her narrow feet sported black three-inch Pierre Dumas heels, a perfect combination. Her semi-curly mane was slightly parted on the right, revealing her slight widow’s peak, flowing onto her shoulders. She was quite a living portrait. Come, let’s go into the study, Dee offered, grabbing Yvette by her hand.

Not only had she forgotten David in her excitement seeing Yvette, she hadn’t allowed Yvette to utter a word.

Mom, David said. Please stop, he stated, grinning.

Suddenly, Dee realized that she had been excitedly speaking nonstop since seeing her future daughter-in-law. She had forgotten about her son. She turned, seeing David, a wide smile spreading over her face.

Oh, honey. I’m so sorry, I forgot about you when I saw Yvette. Please forgive me. You two must think that I’m losing my mind. However, as you see, I’m overly excited seeing Yvette. You look very handsome in your navy-blue suit with your white shirt and matching tie. You two will take a perfect picture.

Thanks, Mom, David said, placing each of his hands on the two ladies’ backs that he loved. Let’s go see Dad.

When they entered the study, David’s father, Stephen, stood, grinning. Yvette, aren’t you a beautiful sight. Come here and give me a hug, honey. I’m so happy to see you. Congratulations on saying yes to marrying David. You’ve made him a very happy man. He embraced Yvette, giving her a quick bear hug, then releasing her, grinning as if he had a big secret that he refused to tell.

Thanks, Dad. I’m so happy that David and I are going to marry. That I’ll be part of your family. It’s been a long and rough journey, but we managed to come through it with little or no lasting scars. We deeply love each other. She looked to David, who gazed at her with his intriguing eyes, causing her to blush.

He moved, greeting his father with a handshake and embrace. Son, you look like you’ve conquered the world. This beautiful, sweet young lady, is so very good for you. I’m so happy that you didn’t give up on her and that she continued loving you.

Thank, Dad. I feel the same way. Vette is my world. I couldn’t be happier. He moved, standing next to Yvette, placing his arm around her waist. They gazed happily at each other.

Stephen and Dee grinned, nodding with satisfaction.

David and Yvette sat close on the sofa, his arm behind her, on the back.

"I want to thank you both for agreeing to stop by before going to your appointment. Your dad and I had to see Yvette. We couldn’t wait until she moved here months later. Besides that, we have a beautiful wedding to plan in a short period of time since you two lovebirds plan to marry in April.

However, oh my, I’ve forgotten my manners. Would you two like something to eat or drink?

Everyone laughed. One would have thought that Dee was getting married rather than Yvette.

It’s all right, Mom. We’re glad that you’re excited for us. I don’t want anything, thank you, David said, gazing at Yvette.

    I’m fine, Mom. Thank you.

Dee loved hearing Yvette call her Mom. It sounded so natural and sweet. She was going to enjoy helping plan her wedding and having her as a new daughter. "All right then. Let me see if I can pull my thoughts together.

"You two are taking your engagement pictures today. You both have the information needed to go along with the announcement. If so, then I’ll take it, so when I pick up your pictures, I can take it to the newspaper society editor. Also, if I may have your proposed wedding date, I will call our church clerk to find out if that date and time is available so that it can be put on the church calendar, and it can be added to your announcement.

Later, when you move here, Yvette, you and David can make an appointment to meet with the pastor. If that’s okay with you both." She smiled, gazing at them.

I think that sounds like a great idea. David and I would like to marry on April 24 at five o’clock. I hope that it’ll be possible. And we do have our written pieces about ourselves. We would love if you took care of the necessary details, right, honey, she inquired, gazing at David.

Yes, we would. As you can see, Vette, Mom is a planner. Maybe she and Susan can be of help to you and me. Susan’s helped some of her friends plan their weddings in the past. She’s very good.

Yvette smiled. I would be honored to have Mom and Susan’s assistance. I certainly have no experience and had planned to hire a wedding planner. However, time is of the essence, and it’s probably not feasible.

Then it’s settled. Susan and I will help plan you all’s wedding. Oh, this is going to be so exciting. Thank you both.

We thank you, Mom. He squeezed Yvette’s hand. It’s time to leave for our appointment, Mom, Dad. He released Yvette’s hand.

Before you two take off, could I have a moment with you, David. It’s important but won’t take too long. She smiled, her eyes gleaming.

    David gazed at Yvette.

She looked at him, winking slightly.

David gazed quickly at his watch. All right, Mom. No more than two minutes.

Thanks, you two. Let’s step into the kitchen, she suggested.

In the kitchen, Dee said softly, Honey, have you told Yvette how wealthy you are? After all, you’re going to marry her, and she should know.

You’re right, Mom. She does need to know. And I’ll tell her when I think it’s the right time. After we’re married. I don’t want to risk her thinking that she won’t fit into a wealthy family. I won’t take the chance of losing her again.

Dee nodded, understanding his reasons. All right then. Long as you tell her soon after you two are married. Keep no secrets from her. She’s a darling young lady. Now you can take your leave, she said, taking his arm, going back into the study.

When they returned, David helped Yvette from the sofa, smiling lovingly at her.

She returned his affection. Then opened her pocketbook, pulling out their wedding announcement information, handing it to Dee, thanking her once again.

Dee thanked her, hugging her tightly, planting a kiss on her cheek. Yvette returned her embrace.

    David’s dad did likewise.

Before taking their leave, they promised to return later that evening for dinner.

Much later, when they arrived at David’s, after taking, it seemed, at least two dozen photos, Yvette was tired. She gazed at David, her eyes revealing a need to rest.

Honey, I’m sorry, but I must grab a nap. If I don’t, I won’t be good company at dinner tonight, she said, stepping out of her shoes in the entryway.

Yes, baby. I can see that you’re exhausted. Do you need me to rub your back, give you a body massage? Make you some tea? he inquired, concerned.

Yvette couldn’t help it. She said, Thanks, honey. Tea and a back rub will be fine. She smiled and offered, But if you think you’re going to give me a body massage, you better keep dreaming, my man. Then she winked, shaking her head in jest.

David laughed. Baby, you can’t blame me for trying. Becoming serious, he offered, Let me carry you upstairs so you can get comfortable. Then I’ll make your tea and give you a back rub, which will relax you and hopefully you can get some rest. How does that sound?

Great, honey. You better hurry because I’m becoming wearier.

As soon as she finished speaking, David took her in his arms, carrying her upstairs.

    * * * * *

That evening spent with David’s parents, his siblings, and their spouses went well. They were elated hearing about the couple’s engagement and upcoming wedding. Susan could barely wait to get started on the wedding plans. That pleased Yvette immensely.

    Chapter 3

David and Yvette arrived at Jon and Mailynn’s home at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. When Jon opened the door, he stood for a moment, gazing at them. He shook his head, smiling. Finally, my brother has his lady, he said excitedly, admitting them.

He shook David’s hand, then turned to Yvette. Hello, my future sister, or will-be sister-in-law? he queried, grinning again, not expecting an answer. You look wonderful as usual. It’s so great seeing you, knowing that you’ll be around until we all grow old.

He turned to David, slapping him on his back, beaming. My brother here is a very lucky and blessed man. You have basically, and right on time, saved his life. He paused, turning back to Yvette, giving her a hug, patting her back. Releasing her, he stated, Mailynn and Maria are going to actually scream when they see you.

Yvette blushed, becoming shy, hearing all that Jon said. While she had become very comfortable with compliments from David, she wasn’t used to flattery from others, especially men, other than her father and brothers and Michael. It’s great seeing you again as well, Jon. You do flatter me, thank you. David and I are both blessed to have finally reunited. I, too, will be happy seeing Mailynn and Maria, she finished, turning, peering at David. He automatically took her hand, helping her relax.

All right then, you two beautiful people. The others are here, waiting as if you two are going to run away. They’re in the living room. Follow me.

David smiled at Yvette, squeezing her hand as they strolled with Jon into the room.

Mailynn was the first to see them. Letting out a short squeal, she flew from her seat, rushing to Yvette, taking her in her arms. Oh, my gracious… I mean… Yvette, it’s wonderful seeing you! You look spectacular. Congratulations to you and David. I’m so excited for you. I can barely wait until you two are married. I want to be in your wedding.

Jon cut in. Honey, can you give Maria a chance to greet Yvette. He laughed.

Maria had been patiently waiting in the wings, stepped forward, embracing Yvette. My beautiful, sweet friend, how wonderful it is to see you again. Congratulations on your engagement to our dear friend and brother. I’m so very happy for you both. I’m going to love having you in our blended family, so to speak. I love you, Yvette, she offered, raising her voice. She released Yvette, her brown eyes glowing with exhilaration, fanning her face as if to calm her excitement.

Maria, my friend, you make my heart sing with your joy for David and me. Thank you so much for your well-wishes. I love you as well. You and Mailynn have become very dear to me. I’m pleased that I’ll become a part of your family, she finished, tears of joy shining in her lovely eyes.

She faced Mailynn, her eyes shining. My friend, it’s awesome seeing you again as well. Thank you for such a delightful greeting and your congratulations to David and me. We’re thrilled to be together again, permanently. Yes, you will certainly be in our wedding. Now, I won’t have to ask you, she said, embracing Mailynn, who returned her affection.

Then she turned to Joshua, smiling. He took both of her hands in his, genuinely happy seeing her. Yvette, you are such a delightful sight. I’m so happy to see you and to see you back with my brother, at last. Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming marriage. You’ve made David a very happy man. God has blessed you both because you were made for each other. He let go of her hands, embracing and kissing her cheek. Welcome home, my sister.

When he released her, she fought to keep from breaking down, bawling. She had received so much love and good wishes that her heart leap joyously. Josh, thank you. Yes, we were made for each other. I’m so overjoyed that through everything that we both endured, we came through it still very much in love. She gazed at David, who was peering lovingly at her.

Thank you for congratulating us and always being there for David. She turned, gazing at Jon. And for you as well, Jon. I know that you all are like brothers and have always been there for David, especially during my quandary, helping to keep him going, uplifting him. I love you all for what you’ve done for him and for me, she finished, moving closer to David.

David kissed her cheek. You all see one of the reasons why I love his outstanding lady. She remains humble and caring.

Mailynn and Maria shifted, taking Yvette from David. Each of them capturing her by each of her arms, sauntering from the room.

The men looked at each other, holding their hands, palms up, drawing up their shoulders, smiling. Then they took their seats in the living room. Jon handed David a glass of wine, and they sat back, chatting.

In the study, the ladies sat on the sofa, one on each side of Yvette.

Yvette, since we are your friends and love you, we naturally want to know what happened—

Maria cut in. We’ve curious and nosy. We are dying to know what happened when you saw David. We always wanted you with him, and not… Tell us please.

Yvette hesitated. She was used to confiding in Lani and Mali and felt comfortable doing so. Even though she had known Maria and Mailynn for years and had formed a camaraderie with them when David, Jon, and Josh went to Sweden in ’76, she wasn’t sure. Then she thought, These ladies like and love me. They always wanted the best for David and me and treated me like an equal from the time I met them. And from now on, I will be spending a great time with them. I trust them.

She sighed, then smiled. "Okay, ladies. Here goes. I don’t want you two to feel badly if I become melancholy. At the fundraiser, I was speaking to my dad when I heard one of David’s and my songs playing. My heart raced for a moment, wondering why that song was playing. Then the next, and when the next began playing, I knew he was there. I had to get out of the ballroom because I knew that I would break down. I took Laoni and Michelle with me.

"Then I saw him. Ladies, I choked up. I thought that I was dreaming. He looked so fine, so handsome. I couldn’t move, yet I wanted to run to him and have him take me in his arms. I couldn’t. I didn’t know if he still loved me. It had been nearly two years since seeing him. I waited, my heart beating so rapidly I didn’t know if I would swoon.

"David turned, greeted Laoni, and met Michelle. Then they went into the ladies’ room. Right afterward, he walked over to where I stood. When he looked at me and moved close to me, I wanted to fall into his arms and have him hold and kiss me, forever. I still didn’t believe it was he. And if so, did he still love me.

"Then, ladies, he moved so close to me, that I could almost feel his body heat, smell his cologne. I turned from him. He asked me to look at him. It was then that I knew that he stilled loved me.

"Yet when he said he missed me and wanted my personal information, I declined. I couldn’t, didn’t know exactly what to do. He gave me his business card and asked me to contact his office. He wanted to stay in touch.

"Then he told me that he had requested our song and needed to dance with me. I told him I would think about it. Before I went back into the ballroom, he practically begged me to dance with him when our song began playing. I told him that I would think about it.

"As soon as the band began playing the song, he came to my table. I accepted his offer to dance. Ladies, it felt so good being held in his arms again. It was as if I had been away from home, desperately missing everything about it, and had finally returned. He was the key. He asked me to look at him, into his eyes. I can’t recall if it was when I saw him in the hall or not. Anyway, we both realized that we remained in love with each other. When the dance was over, he escorted me back to my table. I was soaring as if I were on the wings of a cloud.

"My friends, there’s much more to this long story. However, I’ve given you the crux of it. My main concern was that I had changed in numerous ways and didn’t know if David would love me as I am now or the girl that he knew in the past.

If he accepted and loved me, as I am today, then I would commit to being with him. He assured me that he did and always would. Several days later, he asked me to marry him, again. His proposal was so loving and endearing, I accepted, and here we are, she finished, her eyes glowing, filled with happiness.

That is a heartfelt love story, Yvette. You have changed physically. Your beauty is almost indescribable. I love your green eyes, so enchanting. I know that David must drown in them every time he looks at you. However, he probably had that same look before they changed because he loves you so much. Even though you’ve changed in many ways, you’re still that wonderful lady that we knew years ago. Please let me know what I can do to help with your wedding. I would be honored, Mailynn finished, giving Yvette a quick squeeze.

Before Yvette could respond, Maria raised her hand. "It’s my turn, please. Yvette, my dear sweet and lovely lady, I’m so impressed with you. I know that you have gone through much in the last four years, fighting to save your life. While I don’t know the details, I know what David has told us. That you were brave and resilient and determined. That not only did you finally have help, you had God with you during the entire time, giving you strength to pull through.

"I’m so proud to have you as a friend and a new member of our family. David is so very blessed to have you in his life. He adores you and lives for your love.

"Now if I can be so bold, I want you to know that while we all think that Shelley is a great artist, we are so pleased that David didn’t fall for her. I believe that Jon was correct when he said that she was after him. It seemed odd that she showed up nearly every place he was, after meeting him. Even when he was seeing her, he wasn’t content. And when we saw him, we knew every time he had heard any kind of news from you, spoken to, or seen you, because his eyes were more alive, and he had a bounce in his walk. We know that Shelley suspected that as well.

At one time, we were afraid that he was going to become serious, then something happened. We were sure it had to do with you. It was much later that we learned that David had told her goodbye. We were relieved. We hoped and prayed that he and you would come together again. You two are so endearing and truly belong together. We love you and will always be here for you.

Yvette took each of their hands, looking from one to the other. You ladies are so kind and honest. Thank you for caring about David and my relationship and praying that we would reunite again. Yes, my dilemma was very difficult for me. However, I don’t recall most of it, but the part that I do… I’m blessed that I came through it all, and David was waiting at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. He’s my prince. She smiled at them, squeezing and letting go of their hands.

I think that we’ve invaded Yvette’s privacy enough. It’s time for dinner and a glass of wine, Mailynn said, standing.

While the women were in the study, David explained how he had gotten back together with Yvette. That he had called her brother’s home the following day, spoken to Yvette, then later meeting with her. After having many long discussions, Yvette had concluded that she belonged with him. He went on to tell them how he had proposed, praying that she would accept his proposal, again, permanently. Now he was probably the happiest man alive.

The ladies entered the living room, walking arm in arm. They parted, sitting next to their mates.

When Yvette sat next to David, he automatically placed his arm around her, taking her hand in his. She smiled at him, causing him to desire her, as usual.

Jon served the ladies their wine, then raised his glass, others following. Here’s to David and Yvette, one of the most beautiful and handsome people who were born to be as one, forever. May you always love each other with the zest that you have today. Cheers!

Afterward, Mailynn stood. Everyone, please give me five minutes, then come to the dinner table. All right?

    Everyone agreed.

Yvette and David looked forward to a great dinner and conversation.

Yvette also desired to have a good night’s sleep. The last few days had been a whirlwind. She wanted to sleep in David’s arms because it would be her last night in Chicago.

    Chapter 4

Since her visit to Chicago in late July, the last two months seemed to have flown by as the sand does in a windstorm.

So much had transpired since Yvette and David had found each other again. It was hard to believe that in a few days, she would be leaving Seattle and moving to Oak Park, Illinois, making it her home and become the wife of her first and only love.

Even though they had made plans to see each other often, since last seeing David in Chicago, his practice had kept him extremely busy. Therefore, she had seen him four times and then only during the weekend. Yet he had made it his purpose to call her each night, even when he was beat, just to say hello and voice his love for her. They had even dug out time to talk about Yvette’s plans.

She had decided not to sell her house. Instead, she wanted it to remain unoccupied. An alarm system would be installed, the furniture covered to protect it from dust. Freddie would hire someone to thoroughly clean it every two weeks, take care of the yard, clean the storm drains, and have the lights turned on certain times of the day and night. Anything that she hadn’t thought of, Freddie would cover.

When she explained her reasons, David had agreed with her, stating that her idea was good, that it would be great to stay there on visits rather than staying in a hotel or interrupting Freddie’s and Laoni’s life, even though they wouldn’t mind having them stay at their place.

Yvette had been pleased and continued with her plans. She had given her notice soon after David’s return to Chicago, informing the company that her last day would be at the end of September. Once she was in Illinois and settled, she planned to have her bank account transferred to several banks there and consult an investor and an attorney to assist her with her living inheritance. She also wanted David to be an intricate part of her plans.

David suggested that since it was her money from her dad, she should decide what and how she wanted to invest it. However, she was adamant that he be involved. He had reluctantly agreed.

David had arrived in Seattle yesterday. Presently, she and he sat in the living room, talking quietly about his meeting with his parents and how excited they were about them getting back together and looked forward to her being in the family, again.

Hearing that they repeated their sentiments made Yvette very happy. At last, she would call someone mom who truly cared about her. It was such a joyful yet weird feeling thinking about it.

She laid her head against his shoulder and said, "I’m glad you came before the weekend because I plan to ship my clothes to your place by tomorrow. David, I didn’t realize I had so many clothes until I began sorting them.

I didn’t want them all, so I asked Laoni and Lani to come over and help me and to also choose what they wanted. We had a girls’ trying-on party, if you can believe that. There were some that didn’t fit me anymore, in certain places. She paused because David glanced quickly at her bosom, winking.

Okay, you. Stop, Yvette said, giggling. Anyway, there are six boxes to be shipped and three suitcases, not including my carry-on bag. I also have the records that need shipping, but Freddie will do that for me.

All at once, she became quiet, her face somber.

David, noticing, drew her close. Why are you suddenly unhappy, baby?

She glanced at him, trying to hold on to her composure. "Honey, you know I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you, so please don’t take what I’m about to say at heart.

"Suddenly, I’m feeling a bit low. I’ve lived here since I was twenty years old. Freddie, Laoni, my nephew Joey, my dad, and some of my best friends and coworkers are here. This is my real home. A few days ago, I was given a great send-off from my friends and coworkers. It was wonderful and at the same time sad because I’m leaving them and probably won’t see most of them again. I’m already missing my relatives, and moving to another city filled with strangers is going to be so different, a culture shock.

I know I’ll have to adjust to living in Illinois, but for a while I’m going to be homesick. I’m hoping that the people there are somewhat friendly. She paused, taking David’s hand in hers, kissing the back of it. It’s like I said, honey. I love you and want to be with you, but there probably will be times when I become melancholy. So please don’t think it’s you, David.

David kissed her forehead. "Vette, you mean the world to me. I could never think that you wouldn’t want to be with me again. I understand what it feels like to leave home and live in a strange place, to a degree. That’s similar to the way that I felt when I transferred here to attend UW School of Medicine. That is until I saw you. You changed everything for me, Vette.

When you’re feeling down, I’ll be there to help cheer you up, or if you need to be alone, I’ll do that as well. And when you feel you need to see your family or friends, you return to visit them. If my schedule allows it, I’ll be by your side. I want to help make you happy. To look after you, be your protector, your friend, your husband, your lover, your everything, my sweet.

She snuggled under him. Thanks for understanding, honey. I can say that I’m looking forward to seeing your family, Jon, Josh, and their wives again. Dining at their home was awesome. Anyway, I probably won’t have much time to feel sad because I’ll be busy until our wedding. Oh, David, I’m so looking forward to our wedding and our honeymoon. I’m thrilled about going to Italy and Maui.

So am I. I wanted to surprise you, but I thought that might be inconsiderate. After all, you need to plan your wardrobe and such. I believe it’s a good time to travel to Europe and stay in Maui. We’ll finally be able to totally relax and enjoy ourselves. And as I promised, to love you in more ways than one, he finished huskily.

Humm. I’m looking forward to the pleasure, honey. She sat up, moving away from David. We should be going. I’m driving my car to Freddie’s, remember? I’m leaving it with him to ship to me. Since it’s from Dad, I can’t bring myself to sell it yet. You’ll need to follow me in the rental. Besides, we don’t want to keep them waiting to have dinner.

She began strolling to her bedroom. David sat, watching her, grinning.

Yvette twisted around. One more thing, I have the list of names for our engagement party and my guestlist for our wedding for your mother. Mom. Please remind me to give it to her when we arrive, won’t you. She didn’t wait for an answer. She sauntered into her bedroom to touch up her hair and slip on another pair of slacks.

David remained sitting, thinking he was one darn lucky and blessed man. He was still trying to adjust to having Yvette back in his life and that she would become his wife in seven months.

After returning home later that evening, Yvette and David sat quietly, listening to jazz for an hour.

It had been difficult for Yvette saying goodbye to her family. They all promised to attend her engagement party and participate in her wedding. She vowed to see them for the holidays and as often as possible.

She had become emotional while hugging Freddie, who was extremely special to her, her big brother and protector since their youth, whom she would miss dearly.

When they were in the car, leaving Freddie and Laoni’s, David had driven slowly through downtown, letting Yvette take in the scenery, then to the beach and parked. He turned on the car radio and cuddled her while she calmed down. Then they had strolled along the beach, holding hands, pausing to stare at the beautiful blue calm water, touched by the moon.

While Yvette gazed outward, seemingly absorbing memories of yesterday, David held his arm around her, comforting her. When she finished, without a word, she took hold of David’s hand and began strolling back to the car. He had assisted her inside and driven her home.

The entire day had been quite vexing for Yvette. She tried relaxing. Sitting quietly and listening to jazz was having a calming effect on her. She began tracing her hand along David’s neck. He loved feeling her soft hand caressing him. He closed his eyes, leaning his head over, close to hers.

This is it. Our last time here for a while, Yvette whispered.

I know, baby, David responded, kissing her softly. She returned his kiss.

David sat her on his lap, cuddling her. I love you, Vette, he whispered, then kissed her again. Baby, I know you’re not aware of it, but you’re ravishing. It’s so difficult trying to resist you, in every way. And that delightful smelling perfume you wear doesn’t make it any easier. He moved his face against hers, then forced himself to stop.

I love you, honey, she said, peering deeply into his adoring eyes. I’m happy that you love me and think I’m pretty. She brushed his lips slightly with hers, then caressed them with her forefinger.

Oh, but you do make me want to love you when you do those little things. So please stop for now, or we won’t finish.

Yvette took his face in her hands. I don’t want to talk—

Understanding, David cut her off, embracing and kissing her repeatedly. Each time their need for each other intensified. It had been weeks since they had been together.

I’ve missed holding you, touching you, loving you, Vette. I have taken more cold showers than I care to count. Please don’t make me wait anymore, at least for a while. I need to love you, baby, he groaned.

David, she whispered, pulling slightly from him, gazing into his eyes, hers serious.

Yes, baby. He knew she had something important to say.

I need to tell you about an important decision that I’ve made. You may not like it, but I think it’ll be great for our honeymoon. Honey, once our engagement party is over, I won’t be sleeping with you until after we’ve married. I’m sorry, baby, but that’s the way I feel. I hope it doesn’t upset you too much.

David gazed at her, slightly smiling. Vette, you’re full of surprises. Just another reason why I love you so much. No, I’m not upset. I know it will be tough but worth the wait. And I’ll just have to take more cold showers.

Thank you for understanding, honey. Now, we can—

His mouth covered hers, kissing her as if it was for the first time, in her apartment. Her sweetness caused his need to spread the fire in him. He pulled back, gazing into her eyes.

The look in her eyes gave him her answer.

David stood, gathering her in his strong arms, kissing her as he carried her to her bedroom for the last time as a single lady.

He lay her gently on the bed. He sat next to her, tracing her face with his forefinger, kissing her face, inhaling her sweet body scent, caressing her. Then he slowly undressed her and began kissing her again.

Yvette returned his demanding, sweet, gentle kisses, her senses spinning with anticipation of her body waiting to receive David’s love. She held him tightly, loving the feel of his mouth, his hands caressing her. She closed her eyes, enjoying every blissful moment, caressing him, running her hands through his hair.

David paused to remove his clothes. He eased next to Yvette, taking her in his arms, whispering his love for her. I adore you, baby. You’re my world, and I want to be with you forever. I want to make love to you every time I think of you and more when I see you. I want to hold your loving face in my hands and kiss you. I want you to lay in my arms until there is no longer time, he whispered, kissing her between his passionate words of affection.

Yvette opened her eyes, gazing at him while caressing him, biting her lower lip, her desire for him causing him to nearly lose control.

He turned onto his back, drawing her on top of him, taking her breasts in his hands, caressing them, kissing them. Yvette moaned, throwing her head back, her mouth slightly open. She leaned forward, and David drew her close with one hand, kissing her and caressing her body with his other.

Yvette began trembling and whimpering with desire. Oooh, David, she whispered.

Baby. May I love you now? he groaned.

Yes, my man, she responded breathlessly.

David turned her onto her back, shortly, straddling and easing into her, kissing her, touching her breasts, causing her to cry out softly.

They made gentle, sweet love. David took his time until neither of them could no longer control their desires. He moved faster, Yvette meeting him.

I love you, Vette, he moaned. "You make me
